30% of 40-50 million users buying XBLA games? No wonder so many people use the Indie marketplace. All the more power to them.

In my opinion, some of the best games out there this gen can be found for 5-15 bucks on the XBLA. Who knew?

There are some really great XBLA games out there. A few of which, I've played more than some retail games. Shadow Complex, Trials HD, Battlefield 1943, and UNO all come to mind-- just to name a few.

I noticed there's some games on demand that are appearing in the top 20 live games, which makes me wonder, how well are games on demand selling these days?

Only 30%? I expected it would be higher.

Selling one million units seems to be a rarity for XBLA and PSN. You only ever hear of a few games breaking that barrier (Castle Crashers, Trials HD, UNO, Battlefield 1943), so 30% seems in line.

@Epoque I would have expected the sheer amount of games on XBL to make up for the lack of individual sales volume.

James North-Hearnis a smart guy. Personally, a game has to be near-perfect for me to buy it at $60+ retail cost, and an extremely small number of games even come close to that.

XBLA on the other hand, has a large number of VERY GOOD games that are all worth $5-$15, and are much easier to get into, and don't require a time investment of 30hrs or more.

I agree that something like XBLA is really the future of gaming.

Probably 95% of joystiq readers who own 360s have bought XBLA games, I'd guess. We're a bit more into gaming than your average console owner. I know that I've personally bought at least 20 XBLA games over the years.

And about 70% more would buy xbla games if they all were $5.

I think the issue is just knowledge of the existence of XBLA games rather than a price issue.

Retail games would sell better at $5, too.

Actually they wouldn't. if they were all $5, sacrifices would have to be made to the quality, or they just wouldn't bother at all. Just look at the $1 iPhone market. Not one app can sell at well as $60 Call of Duty or $50 Super Mario Bros.

Interesting point on the digital distribution. I can't agree that it will out grow physical CD sales unless they start making XBOX and Playstation's with terabyte hard drives. Nobody wants their entire game collection crowing the system. Also download speeds and bandwidth limitations would thwart any mass distribution of the top seated games. Imagine the chaos of millions trying to download CoD or Halo the day it comes out? Systems crash anyone? DLC is always appreciated though :-)

before i stopped playing my 360 when i got my PS3 like 3 years ago. the XBLA games were coming out from all over the place. and if it had a demo i tried it and 90% of the times i didn't like the games, so the exclusive games to 360 to me were horrible or poor standing imo. when i used the PS3 and played the games that are exclusive for PSN i enjoy them all except one ( Novastrike ) but the ones i enjoy ( Pixel Junk Monsters/Eden/Shooter and Go Sudoku and Tumble and Blast Factor and magic Orbz and Mahjong and Cuboid ) those are awesome games i have and like alot tho i'l say Trine isn't to bad but it's not really exclusive either.

meh i dunno maybe it's just me but i didn't care for the selection i played when i used my 360 before i packed it away i'm happy that PS3 doesn't have that horrible Toyota game ( or anything similar ) that XBLA had free or not it just shouldn't have been made i'l stick to Novastrike over that Toyota game

Yeah, I didn't bite the bullet on an XBLA game until last year sometime...nothing seemed meaty enough to justify the purchase. I finally bit on Castle Crashers and it's been a slippery slope since then...

only 30% ?

that's actually really low. certainly nothing to brag about.

maybe that's why we only ever hear Microsoft bragging about a "record number of players" on Live....

PSN is not as "successful"?

Depends on your definition of "successful". From a quality standpoint, there is an argument to be made that the PSN has less, but overall higher quality, titles.

@JasonA

I don't think the overall quality is nearly as important as the quality and quantity of the good games for the systems. For example, if both systems had 20 10/10 games, but all the non-perfect games on one system were 1/10 and 2/10, it's not like you'd buy them anyway.

That wasn't clear, sorry. I mean if the xbox had fifty 1/10 games, and the PS3 had thirty 2/10 games, it wouldn't really matter. I'm NOT saying that's how it is; I am saying that it might not really matter which has the higher average.

PSN has had a larger user base for like a year now.

I'd say there are fewer triple A titles on PSN than on XBLA. However, if you own a PS3 and a PSP, there's a unique value-add to Minis, which are playable on both systems.

Too bad A) Minis (or any PSP game, for that matter) have no trophies and B) There's no way that I no of to merge/continue progress in a Mini across PSP and PS3.

I agree, I have over 10 XBLA games and each one cost at least 400MSP and at least half of them I paid $10 and over.

I really enjoyed all of them too because of the really cool trial option.

I miss small file sizes, and $10 games. I don't mind
if it's a couple hundred megs, but beyond that is too
much.

I do welcome re-releases of games from older consoles,
like the DC games. I would really like to see another
section for Olde Consoles, right along with Arcade,
Games on Demand, Indie Games, etc.

Okay, a game like Castle Crashers is easily worth $15.
