yeah, i saw nothing that mentioned 80 gigs anything...

anywho, wow that was a pretty bad review. i felt like i learned nothing about new vegas, aside from a few sentences talking about weapons modding and such. basically wasted 5 minutes of my life reading about someone complain that they are playing a game on the laggy xbox. its called a pc, and if you want to keep up with graphics and butter smooth framerates you should get one. don't blame the game when you are using dated hardware on new (maybe revised in this case) game tech.

all i know is my 480gtx, 3.5ghz quadcore and x25m ssd are going to eat this game for breakfast, lunch and dinner. it'll at least be a step up from playing fallout 3 on a 9600gt hp pavilion, haha.

@RKN Dude, if you honestly think that Obsidian is going to have a bug free release on PC when they couldn't even get a 2+ year old engine work properly on a *closed* platform they already had functional assets for, you are sadly, sadly mistaken. Also? Throwing money at something broken until it works isn't really anyone's idea of a good time.

That said, I loved Fallout 3, and preordered this for Day One delivery. I don't want my experience ruined so I'm going to sit on it for a week or two and hope they release a patch.

The bugs in these games will always be a complaint, especially with reviewers. I always took it as a side effect to the massive world that Bethesda (and this time Obsidian) creates. Despite some game breaking bugs, I played the death out of Morrowwind, oblivion, and Fallout 3. They probably won't stop me from playing the death out of this game.

Besides, even with an amazing computer there are game breaking bugs in Fallout 3 and Oblivion PC version or no. I think the reviewer was pointing out that issue rather then graphical bugs. Which, despite how awesome their games can be is a valid point.

you are correct. there will be bugs all around, i'm definately not saying pc will be bug free. however i was just stating that load times and framerates are limited on the 360. it also vastly depends on what res you game at...at least on a pc. not sure how the xbox handles that.

sadly my computer is still in pieces, but your last statement made me feel better, haha. maybe by the time (couple of weeks) i get my comp running there will be a patch to fix some bugs.

is it just me though? this review seemed to blow. not talking about how it didn't score well but the info provided gave me nothing i didn't already know from reading all the preview articles. it was as if they wanted to review it asap, played it for a few hours, found bugs, and wrote the review based on preview info and a lack of playthrough. i could be 100% wrong though, just sayins all....i'll wait for ign's review, they seem to give games a throrough run through before they post reviews

@DURDADUR I thought it was a fine review. I've only been visiting Joystiq for a short time but from my experience, they've never done big multi-page reviews that go into every aspect of the game.

The review game me a summary of what is new, explained some of the problems and gave me an overall idea of whether the game was worth playing. I don't really see what else it needed.

As for the PC/360 argument, playing it on a PC isn't a valid solution. First, as others have mentioned, that version will probably have bugs too but more importantly, if they're going to release a game on consoles, they need to do it right. If the platform cannot handle the game, they shouldn't be making it for that platform.

That said, I don't recall hearing similar issues with Fallout 3 (I've never played past the vault sequence on my copy) so since it uses the same engine, it leads me to believe that it's poor programming, not an issue with the platform.

i guess i am just used to the multi page reviews from ign, haha. for what it was i guess it was ok. i think i have just read so much about the game, it felt more like a summary of what i already knew...minus the bugs and glitching.

i know pc/xbox is a weighted comparison....and i agree that if it doesn't run well on the console then it should be fixed before release or not released at all. but this is why i game on pc, at least for games like this. racing games, adventure games and such are more fun on the console. but any game like an fps or even some 3rd person games just seem to control better on a pc, but that is what i am used to. and if your pc has got the specs, you typically don't have to fret the stutters and lagging found on consoles. but i have yet to try this game on a pc, so for all i know it could be the game and not the specs. can't wait to find out though, it'll be a good game none the less, i freaking loved fallout 3.

@Red O Magnus Couldn't really go back and have FedEx or whoever it is send it back midshipment, and the review embargo only lifted today, which in retrospect probably should have set off some sort of alarm.

In any case, ignoring bugs, Fallout 3 was one of my favorite games of all time (sank over 150 hours into it and I've still got 3.5 DLCs to go), so preordering this for day one delivery seemed like a complete no-brainer. I'm not going to send it back, I still wanted it, I just think it can wait now, is all.

I actually thought it was a great review, I don't know what some of these guys are saying. It tells me that it's full of all the rich chocolaty goodness I was hoping for, and lets me brace for the crappy bits I wasn't expecting. Like many others, it's similar enough to Fallout 3 that I'll just take my time finishing those last DLCs and by the time I'm ready for New Vegas, New Vegas will hopefully be ready for me.

If New Vegas was more of a jump in graphics and gameplay, I'd get it, but since it's so similar to Fallout 3, then I'll stick to trying to complete all the Fallout 3 DLC.

It'd been so long since I actually played Fallout 3 that I found myself in a bad way of forgetting how to play it well, so basically restarted and now back in Vault 101, so can correct any wrong choices I accidentally made as well. It'll be a while before I'm ready for New Vegas, and by that stage it'll be cheaper, have GOTY and have many of the bugs released. I'll also have a better PC better able to cope with huge worlds.

With this review I doubt it'll be winning any GotY contests. I wouldn't expect it from a carbon copy game. I'd buy any and all "alternate Fallout3s" though.

Let's hope with 4 Bethesda makes like Elzar and "Kicks it up a notch", preferable with a spice weasel. Bam!

@SuperWoody64 The game doesn't need to win any GOTY contest to have an edition like that. Look at Borderlands for example...

It's just the way Bethesda like to release their games, i'm pretty sure one year for today we'll se an ultimate edition with all the DLC on disc like it should be done.

No despite being a great game i get the feeling they have done to alpha protocol what rare did to star fox adventures when they were bought out by MS, simply finished the game in a rought way and been done with it :( Probably to focus on this.

But since the advent of DLC i am also in the GOTY edition camp, want to pay once for the game please k thnx

I'm going to buy this today and when the GOTY comes out i'll wait for a used copy, pick it up, install the DLC then take it back and say i bought the wrong game. Feels like having my cake and eating it too. Instead of waiting a year i can play a great game now and continue the experience later on without spending anymore money.

Great idea that, when in doubt, resort to fraud............

BTW, its likely the DLC in the GOTY edition for PS3/360 will be "on the disc" not installed (if they are installed they will be "locked" to the GOTY edition disc), unless your talking PC. Bu tin the case of PC stores don't accept back opened PC games because of the fact that you can install and bring back, so only very few used PC games and you will ahve to give it back as used again.

@Milky1985 If you're talking about the Xbox360/PS3 version i don't think is gonna work since the normal version and the GOTY version are treated like two different games on the consoles.

The problem is it's Bethesda's engine. It's funny how everyone is calling out Obsidian on the bugs like it's somehow their fault. Bethesda created a SH*TTY engine and refused to fix it yet everyone gave them a free pass. F*ck that. Bethesda needs to hire some competent software architects/engineers this all comes back to them.

But, Obsidian used the Engine and with a 2 year time frame that's plenty of time to A.) Create a new engine or B.) Patch the hell out Bethesda's. If Mirros Edge, Mass Effect or any Tom Clancy game froze while you were playing it. You wouldn't yell at Epic for creating the Unreal Engine would you?

Where the gaming industry is today there's no excuse for a game to freeze "multiple" times and have framerate dip below 10. I'm holding Obsidian responsible for this. They should have delayed this game a couple of weeks/months and fixed the engine. Their game in most cases isn't getting knocked down for the gameplay but, the technical glitches. Putting this game from 9-10 reviews into 7-8's.

This was just dumb business decision on Obsidians part and hopefully they fix it soon.

"Bethesda created a SH*TTY engine and refused to fix it yet everyone gave them a free pass."

Emergent Game Technologies created the Gamebryo engine and, in one form or another, it's been around for almost 11 years; the engine's fairly dated at this point but, from a stability point of view, it's no worse than competing middleware.

Both Bethesda and Obsidian are well known for pretty crappy programming and I fail to see why people are surprised by New Vegas's technical problems; nearly every release from both developers have crippling bugs of some description. While I agree both companies should be called out for their lack of quality assurance, it's more or less accepted by most people that their releases will be terribly bug ridden and will still have issues after patching.

good analysis - thoughtful, fair. new vegas has always struck me as a cash-in (well, a more obvious cash-in than any given game), but you're right - if you like the experience, what are those $60 to you? but to ship a game with multiple "A" bugs - showstoppers? jeez louise.

Yeah, I see this game as a cash cow as well, like those inevitable movie sequels. I will either wait for GOTY edition or pass. I loved Fallout 3, and I think it's ok to be a fan of a franchise without buying everything related to it. The Fallout 3 experience was great. Playing with the same engine in a different setting though...doesn't really get me all that excited.

@maveric101 somehow i think he means first party violation (i.e., Microsoft Technical Requirements - TRCs - that every game released for the X360 must comply with before receiving approval to go to retail). lots of games get waived with these sorts of issues present if the Publisher can promise a patch, etc. by a certain deadline or what have you.

Vanquish - a brand new IP, created by one of THE BEST in the business - is somehow less unique than Fallout: New Vegas - a direct sequel, farmed out from the original developers - then? I'd be intrigued to see how you'd substantiate that.

What on earth is wrong with a short game that you would take a 'unique game filled with bugs over a 6 hour one' everytime?

Ever had an orgasm?

I'm a student. I have precious little time between college, and work, and precious little money to spare on any sort of luxury.

When I purchase a game, it has to be worth my time and money. Right now time is going to be very expensive to game developers, so 60 dollars has to be stretched out for quite some time.

Fallout 3 did this for me, the sheer length and amount of content ensured that even with my limited time, I had something to do.

A game I will complete in one week, (about an hour a week), just isnt worth my money collecting dust on the shelf. Its a rental at best for me.
