A "massive" redesign of Xbox.com will launch tomorrow, Major Nelson has announced. Beginning at 5AM ET on October 20, Xbox.com and the Xbox Forums will go offline for "a short period of time" to integrate the update. Once live again, the site will be all tidy and clean (pictured; more images here) and introduce several browser-based activities.
Notably, a full Avatar Editor will be added to Xbox.com, allowing users to create, edit and start all over with their Avatars, as well as try on Avatar Marketplace items before purchasing them -- take note: "It just looked so fresh on the mannequin" will no longer be a valid excuse for spending 4 bucks on a Flashy Suit. The Major also teases the new ability to "play web games with your Xbox Live friends on the web or on Windows Phone 7" (but do we get Achievements for that?).
The update will also improve messaging functionality on the site and provide access to Xbox Live usage data for family accounts -- you know, to track your kids' hours. We don't have to remind you how critical it is for the little ones to keep up with their Modern Warfare 2 regimen to ensure a strong start in Black Ops competition this November -- gotta keep those K/D ratios up! The 12-year-old might have trouble juggling multiplayer and school work, sure, but it's not like the fourth grader has that much homework getting in the way of a real shot to go pro one day.

Sounds good, as long as the site just loads faster. Right now with all the Silverlight BS running constantly, pages are much slower than they could be if streamlined.

@Prboi I'm not really a hardcore Mac guy, but I think Apple wins in that department.

@thisredengine For a while there, even the open source guys were beating Microsoft in that department, since it was obvious 5-6 years ago that the modern computer user uses too many windows for a UI paradigm like the task bar to be effective.
Microsoft designed an interface in 1994-1995 and didn't change it significantly until Windows 7 was released just last year. They're getting better, but king... I don't think so.

That's true. When Apple basically all but designed windows for them in the 80's, Microsoft became king of interaction design.

I like it, it looks nice. Some AJAX/real-time messaging would be nice, similar to how you don't have the refresh the browser to know that you recieved a new e-mail in Gmail or Hotmail.

Agreed. It's a pain to message people and constantly have to reload multiple pages just to carry the conversation.
Hopefully they also add the ability to play voice messages or view image/video messages on the site as well, especially with Kinect coming up.

Anyone else unable to queue marketplace items for download using Chrome? Hopefully this update will fix that though it probably is just Silverlight not playing nice with Chrome.
Posted: Oct 19th 2010 2:58PM noyesa said
@Nastt They've been slowly fixing up the kinks in Chrome. Up until a couple months ago, the overlay that shows up when you hover over one of your friends' avatar would look like complete gobbledigook. There are still a few quibbles they're sorting out as Microsoft slowly brings their browser into the current millenium.

Great, now you get the ugly Mii-ripoffs showed down your throat even more.
So can you turn off the auto-renewal of Live online now? No. Of course, that's only available in the US. Why would they make it possible for anyone in a tiny place like EFFING EUROPE? For that matter, why is it not available in every region? I seriously can't believe it's not illegal for shady companies like Mircosoft to operate like they do. Signing up for them to take your money is a cakewalk. Making them stop is almost impossible. The only way to do it is by calling them and having them talk you in circles forever.
These people are truly despicable filth. Yeah, let's add a load of absolutely useless features instead of making it possible to do the actually important stuff.

There we go; downvoted immediately. Clearly I'm wrong to think small, poor companies like Microsoft should offer a level of consumer friendliness that is even close to acceptable. Clearly it's wrong of me to insult the sort of people who design services and websites to make it easy to give them money and extremely complicated to make them stop taking it.
I also wonder how many downvotes live somewhere where the auto-renewal option isn't disabled!

You see that? The ON isn't clickable in some regions. Why? Because someone's a dick, that's why.

I'll stop complaining when there aren't things that need to be complained about. I know, it's truly horrible for me to focus on things besides "OOOH LOOK THE WEBSITE HAS NEW SHINY COLORS".
Things stagnate if no one complains about them. If no one demands improvements, the improvements never happen.
But people like you refuse to strive for improvements. "No, shut up, you can't demand that we create houses; we already have caves! Improving things is forbidden! We even got shiny rocks now; why can't you smile and stare at those?"
I complain so much because no one else does. If others were smart enough to actually point things out and demand that they were fixed, I wouldn't have to. But people don't, partly because the world we live in is full of people like you, who treat them like crap if they do complain. And you're going to dismiss all of this with more of your disgusting jerk "logic", as usual. "Ignore him, he's not worth your time, he does nothing but complain." Sound familiar? It probably does, despite how laughably stupid and full of faulty reasoning it is.
I don't like you!

Hey Dumbass... Yep thats right I called you a Dumbass.
You can use the Disable Auto-Renew from the website from any region.
Its on the US Site... aka, just go to the top of the page and click that pretty colored text that says CHANGE WEBSITE REGION! then you click United States, then you go and disable it.
Or you know you could go to http://www.xbox.com instead of http://www.xbox.co.op.ch.jp.uk
Thank you, and Good bye
PS: GTFO of Joystiq, we don't want you.

why cant they just spend this time and effort changing the dashboard? i want a less cluttered, more focused, customizable experience. oh yeah, and no ads for gold members. I swear with all the ads on xbox live you'd think it would be 100% free by now...
Posted: Oct 19th 2010 2:51PM Petebot330 said
@sammo21 There's one row of "ads." All have to do with Xbox or games. You move your analog stick up and *poof* they disappear.

I'm so confused why everyone has a Wah-gasm every time they happen to glimpse an ad on Live. It's not like they're intrusive or ever interrupt anything you're trying to do. Besides, most of the time they feature offers that I want to know about. So what's the problem, exactly? Or are you guys just a bunch of bitchy PSN users?

I've never understood this arguement.
I use my dashboard to watch the videos they put up there daily and to see new content for game videos, demos and arcade games. The promotions they put up there is all internal to the Xbox Live ecosystem and can be bypassed anyway.
Protip: Use the Xbox Guide button to Quick Launch all your games and apps. That's what it is there for. Its also much quicker than Dashboarding everything.
