Minecraft to get portals between servers, eventually
34
Minecraft maestro Markus Persson recently updated his blog with a progress report on his new studio, Mojang Specifications, and news about the upcoming Halloween update for the game. He notes that Mojang has found a building and now includes six employees: three programmers, a pixel artist, a CEO and a business developer.
As for the Halloween update, Persson says it will include six new block types, five of which have "unique abilities." There will also be a new monster, "a new dimension" and portals. Persson explained later in a tweet that these portals will eventually be able to link between different Minecraft servers, though this functionality won't be implemented anytime soon.
So, can monsters use portals? If so, we totally would not build a transdimensional monster funnel leading directly inside of another player's meticulously crafted fortress. So, feel free to invite us to a game and leave us alone in the back room for a few minutes ... okay?

It's surprising how a simple game like Minecraft can be such a hit with the community. Just goes to show you looks aren't eveything

Portals between servers. I can honestly say I never would have thought to implement that.

Notch couldn't successfully accomplish this if he had unlimited resources. Nothing personal and i love minecraft but notch needs to just stick with adding blocks, animals, tools, etc because the more advanced crap he adds, the more he breaks the game...or fails horribly each time.
Being an optimist is great and all but you have to know your limitations and notch's are basic Java coding

He said it would be pretty far in the future. If he can't do it, then I'm sure he won't put it into the game broken. And he is adding more blocks and animals and stuff in the Halloween update.
You do realize he's hiring a team to work on minecraft right? This isn't a one-man job anymore.

-Run into portal
-Loading screen (which is actually disconnecting you from current server and reconnecting you to another server)
-Come out of other side of portal
Servers wouldn't even have to be linked to each other or have permission from another server's admins to "portal" to them, but the portals would have to be told what IP they are connecting to after they disconnect...Kinda like how you tell it what IP you want to play SMP on now, but its a portal within a server telling the game to do it if you ever run through it. Doesn't sound like it would take much to figure out how to program that in.

Mczall server software (and maybe others) already have portals between worlds on their servers, it would be a piece of cake to do the same thing between servers, but I don't really see a major need for it at this point.

Only thing I could see it for is to have a public world set up that anyone could log into and a portal to a "VIP/Whitelisted" world for regulars.
Otherwise I don't really care for this. Was just trying to show how simple the concept behind it was.

If you're not into "just making stuff" then minecraft probably isn't the game for you.

Well the full game is having you mine stuff, cut trees, hide from enemiess.. or something.
Theres more in the "full game" then the browser "Demo". Thats all I meant. Browser was just building stuff, there was no purpose (I made a gigantic castle)

Yes, but survival (alpha) mode is still primarily about building up a fortress, with a side of exploration. Personally, I am much more fond of creative mode because there are no limits on what you can create.
@Wazzup4567
I think he probably meant that online is a lag-fest, but I'm not really sure. Creative can sometimes can get laggy when people start using commands. Then again, some people can have lag issues when the fog render distance is set to far if their computer sucks.

Well then, if there's a new monster, than I'm assuming the halloween update will let us KILL them too. (In Multiplayer that is.)

Combine those things and you get minecraft.
Also, a train simulator or something.

The world I'm currently on has a bit of a cliff beside my house. I've dug into the side of the cliff. Scary as hell when the sun is at midday to walk between the cave and the house, to be attacked by a bloody spider remaining alive somehow ready to stalk me.
