Hexic should be a familiar name to most Xbox fans, coming pre-installed on many Xbox 360 systems. This puzzle game is yet another twist on the match-three concept, letting you rotate hexagonal trios. Unlike many other match-three games, the goal isn't necessarily to clear the board. Instead, Hexic is ultimately about creating stars, by figuring out a way to make a single-colored circle. The next step is to make a pearl out of stars, and finally the ultimate goal: a flower of black pearls.
It's this lofty goal that makes Hexic a bit more enjoyable and strategic than many other puzzle counterparts. The Windows Phone 7 version is no different, even dishing out Achievements for such goals. Carbonated Games' mobile port comes across as smartly designed, letting you quickly select and turn pieces with your finger. However, in practice, it doesn't work out so neatly. Having your finger rest on the right spot can be difficult, especially considering how small the boxes are on a mobile phone. The interface would be perfect on a larger screen (like an iPad), but I found it too easy to hit the wrong cluster of pieces.
It's too bad I can't get a grip on the controls, because Hexic Rush's new "Rush" mode is a perfect addition to the series. In this mode, you'll be able to twist the pieces, even when they don't result in a three color match. While this makes creating stars much easier, there's a caveat: every few seconds, a bomb appears on the screen. As the level progresses, the bombs appear more frequently. At its most chaotic, this mode is definitely a rush.
Unlike Carbonated's Flowerz, Hexic looks sleek and runs smoothly. The new Rush mode definitely makes it a worthwhile upgrade to the Xbox original. But, considering how difficult the controls are, I recommend you try the demo before you jump into a purchase.
