"The Windows Phone version of Bejeweled, for example, costs $4.99. The iPhone version costs $0.99"

That sums up the experience to me.

Much like Kinect, I don't think this has anything to do with educated hardcore gamers.

However, unlike Kinect, the average consumer is much more educated about the handheld competition and will definitely pick up on nuances like this.

@CaptainProtonX I agree. But, from a developer's standpoint if MS can create a market that has not been undervalued by the $0.99 app price point it will find lots of friends amongst devs if not amongst customers. Microsoft must feel that Live is a good enough draw to demand a premium for games. Because your $0.99 Android or iPhone version of Bejeweled will net you exactly zero tasty..... (wait, has the term "cheevos" been shot, put in a hole, sprinkled with lye and covered with dirt yet? I am so out of touch.)

What about the load times? I heard that the load times for games vary between 1 minute and up to 3 minutes? Has this been addresses or is it still an issue?

Thats pretty wild. when my wife picked up a Samsung Galaxy S i realized just how much more you are charged on iOS than android. Hell if its games i barely even use my iPhone anymore (and will be replacing it as soon as my contract ends with an android handset)

oh well, i was thinking (barely) of looking into something in the WinMo7 lineup, but this is kind of the straw that broke the camels back. im not paying more just because its microsofts phone.

they are also really getting carried away with Xbox live on the Xbox.

@CaptainProtonX Don't you realize their is an Achievement Tax of $4. Why you think avatar clothing cost so much?

Seriously, I thought the idea of Live Anywhere was great when introduced in 2006. I realized it would suck when I saw it being implemented for Windows Phone. I realized that they would use achievements as the driving force for game overpricing. Oh well. When Apple makes their Gaming Community, Microsoft will respond. Hopefully with lower prices.

Frogger is the best selling game and Bejeweled Live is currently the 3rd best selling app on Marketplace. I don't think hardcore gamers understand the new markets that MS is selling it's products to.

What exactly is meant by "hefty price of entry" here? I was under the impression that these phones cost either less or equal to what many Android phones and the iPhone cost.

@HissingNewt I meant compared to say, a standalone iPod Touch, PSP or Nintendo DS. There are many ways of buying into a portable ecosystem without having to sign a two year contract. WP7 currently doesn't offer that.

Signing away your soul in a two-year contract is a hefty price of entry.

I am contractless and pay a small fraction of what most people do per month for cell service. But they don't seem to even realize that there's an alternative.

@Andrew Yoon Ok, fair enough. I do think it's a bit unfair to compare something like a phone to something like a DS due to the fundamental difference in purposes between the two devices, but that doesn't really matter if we're just talking about ways to get into mobile gaming.

@Kevadu err...no you're actually not. People who sign a contract don't pay any more than anyone else. All they are doing is locking themselves in at one place for 2 years.

Can people who aren't locked in get a better deal by hopping around? Maybe, but only if you are willing to pay anywhere between $400 - $600 for a quality smartphone that is unlocked. when people who sign the contract get much of that handset cost subsidized, I'd say it comes out almost even really.

You are free, and that means you can jump ship if you want. It might save you a little, but nothing to write home about.

But isn't that what it is ultimately trying to be, or rather a selling point of the phone? I mean it kind of feels weird saying that you shouldn't compare it to at least a DS or PSP or even an iPod, seeing as its main focus, other than being a phone of course, is gaming on the go.

In other words, if it's main feature is gaming on the go, why shouldn't I compare to what is readily available at a lower price and with far more stellar library, at least at this stage?

@ArchiGamer because comparing it to the others will make it look like a piece of shit xD Nintendo's Ds already sells way more then the PSP and the 3ds will even further out sell it and a phone with games...

I personally find controls on the Iphone/my Verizon phones to be really shitty control wise... unless Microsoft allowed the Xbox controllers to sync to the phone there's really no competition

Riiiight. And I guess the ability to use Zune Marketplace content (movies, music, TV shows and Zune Pass) on the Xbox 360, the Zune HD, the PC and on WP7 phones, magically does not count as cross-platform approach.

And on the gaming front, I guess the announcement back at the WP7 unveiling and at MIX10 about XBLA and XNA games being easily ported from Xbox to WP7 is expected never to pan out cross-platform gaming (ie. buy the game once, use it on more than one Windows platform).

Nice to know that Joystiq is really on top of the news *wink*

@Tachyonic Cargo But as I mentioned in my article, ports of games don't really sell a platform. It didn't work for Sony and the PSP, and I don't think it will work for Microsoft and WP7. The best games are ones that are designed for the touch interface. Microsoft has promised a lot in WP7's future... but this is a review of what's available right now, for you to buy in a store. It's one thing to buy into a promise, it's another to actually see the company deliver. I'm sure you and I agree that it will be great to see Microsoft's vision for WP7 actually come to fruition.

It just hasn't yet.

And both of those devices offered all that stuff from day one right? Xbox live is already better than gameroom on the iphone and anything the psp will have in the next decade. I am 99.99999% confident they will be the hands down best gaming phone out there with xbox live mobile.

Well I like the fact that they're enforcing mandatory demos. Every downloadable game platform, from consoles to handhelds to phones need to do this. You can't rent these games and they tend to get apathetic coverage so sometimes there's no other way to find out whether you want to buy a game.

As a gamer, I'm definitely happy with WP7, but as a journalist, I don't live in a bubble. I know what the other platforms have to offer, and while this launch is a great start, MS still has a lot of catching up to do.

@SFX BIGANT Multi-tasking is a pretty big feature that's missing in the first revision of the OS. Notifications. And many, many apps. That being said, the stuff that is available looks great. Metro just makes things look great. The Foursquare app, for example, incorporates Bing, and really outdoes every other version of that app.
