I think I'll still pick this up. I've found that I can overlook a lot in a game with the right kind of humor mixed in. Sometimes I realize that all the "serious" games actually just kind of get me down.

Played the trial last night & got put off by the lack of voice acting. I feel the game really could've been something cute and special with proper voice acting but like the review mentions, the text scrolls too fast to be readable so I ended up with very little knowledge of what was going on and got bored really quickly.

Same here, unfortunately. Graphics are cute and the dialogue that I could read seemed humorous. Heard that there's no manual save option in the full game so if you stop playing at certain points, you might have to replay your last half hour or so (depending on when your last auto-save happened). Hopefully they'll patch that...

Much relieved I'm not the only one that had trouble with the text speed. I literally went "whoa!" as what I can only assume is witty dialog blazed past.

This was the one big drawback for me, lack of voice acting and speedy text. It'd be an immediate buy if there was voice acting. Hate to seem so picky but it makes it a more complete Double Fine product to me that way.

Stupid thing is , if there was voice acting peopel would complain that either the kids didn't sound like kids or that the kids were too screechy due to ... sounding like kids.

So no voice acting is the best option, if your damn if you do and damned if you don't .. then don't and go to the pub instead.

I actually thought the lack of voices was a nice touch, as they never sound like you'd imagine anyway. Felt a bit more like the old-school RPG classics.

Enjoying it so far though, just got the 3rd member of my team.
And the Statue of Liberty's special made me do a proper laugh!!

A bit gutted you can't equip more than one battle card (was hoping you could equip more at higher levels) but then I shouldn't expect it to be too deep given the primary audience.

Bought it on release and stayed up until 2am on a work night to beat it. Just couldn't put it down. Even collected everything and finished every quest. Got all trophies. Only thing I would have them change was the length of the game. I finished wanting more. MORE! Hope that Double Fine makes a series out of these and releases them every Halloween.

I really enjoy playing it and I'm an adult. It isn't a difficult game, but it is enjoyable and I like the Halloween theme. This reviewer is correct about the battles becoming drudgery. They are almost impossible to lose so they just slow down your progress by being time consuming instead of challenging.

Having fun with it so far. I'm already through world one of what I think are only three, so it's a short game, and you do the same things a lot; but it's got so much charm and clever bits that I'm really enjoying it.

I'm even thinking of buying it for my 8 year old cousin. It makes for a great first RPG.

The last battle is pretty tough, I had to play at least six times to beat the guy. The save system is weird, it seems like it only saves when it tells you it is actually saving, not always at points you think it would. Finishing and getting quests saves, but it's hard to tell when you'll get a chance.

It's pretty fun, but I think it certainly should have been $10 instead of $15. The $15 pricepoint is just too ingrained now, they need to remember that they can still put things at $10.

Like others have said, the save system is not good. Pay careful attention to when the auto-save dialogue appears (usually after a minor event). I had to replay ~15 minutes -- and re-collect lots of candy -- because I'd (incorrectly) assumed the game auto-saved after acquiring a costume part.

How can a kid read this if even adults have trouble?

I have to say after playing the demo if it was 800MSP I probably would buy it. It was fun and quirky.

I read VERY fast and VERY well and even I had trouble keeping up at times. It needs a manual save as well as a map. But the dialog is well written, the cartoony animation fits well, the gameplay is simple enough for almost any gamer to pick up, and it looks like there will be enough "side questing" to keep it from getting to monotonous.

on a side Question, did the Demo have a definitive ending? I couldnt get the last 5 house, the last 2 hidden kids, didn't see a way to actually "complete" the demo.....or am not smarter than a 5th grader?

I'm pretty sure you're not meant to be able to complete any more in the demo. I went everywhere and couldn't get those last houses or hidden kids either. Probably being one of those barriers which says (humorously) that you must buy the full version of the game in order to pass...

I probably wouldn't have picked this up if it weren't for that XBLA deal. Costume Quest would be a VERY good $10 game.

I was hesitant in purchasing the full version but Double Fine's charm coerced me. In the trial where you first meet the battle stamp girl that's when I knew I had to buy it.

I got the game on day one and love it. there are a few minor flaws (saving, battles get pretty repetitive in large doses, it's short), but it's still worth it. It reminds me of the love child between Super Mario RPG and Earthbound...

Voice acting would have been nice, but it's by no means a deal-breaker. Like classic adventure games, reading the text allows you to imagine a voice in your head. I do agree that kids likely won't be able to read fast enough; a "text speed" option, as in said classic adventure games, would be welcome.

While the turn-based combat sections are pretty straightforward, they're also consistent and gradual in their increase in difficulty. There's no grinding or boredom (as with the battles in Deathspank), and there's no dropping you into something you can't possibly know how to handle (as in Penny Arcade Adventures' first episode).

I think 4/5 is a fair rating, as it's not a perfect game, but any given game rarely is. I would take some minor points off for some sloppiness with collision detection issues and being able to easily get "lost" behind houses whose roofs/walls don't become transparent when they would block you from view. With those two nits, I would give it a 4.5/5 and highly recommend it.

For folks who liked Penny Arcade Adventures (like myself), Costume Quest is a must-play.

I really enjoy this game, I'm progressing very slowly on purpose, but I'm enjoying everything I'm playing.

The battle system is unique enough to separate it from other RPGs, the closest I could compare it to is Paper Mario or Mario&Luigi games. The writing is very well done and humorous. The art style is very cute and colorful.

I think the best part of it was the setting and atmosphere. They capture the feeling of Halloween in a suburban area so well, I felt 10 years younger just playing it.

That said, I think it is worth the price of $15. It's not terribly expensive and for the product I think it fits. Sure there are other Arcade/PSN games out there that are over inflated when it comes to price, but for a well polished game like this, it fits.

This is a game for ore developed readers (let's say third grade and up) and the words are too fast for them. Also, this isn't a game to play with your kids - it's single player. Costume Quest has great style, but really isn't aimed at children.

I love this game. I can understand people's problem with the fast text although I never managed to miss anything as I'm an incredibly fast reader. The combat is simple yet fun and there's a lot of humour. Only thing it needs is an arena mode or something so you can keep continuously fighting monsters.

I got the demo not being sure if I'd buy the full version. By the time I got the first "you would have got an achievement" teaser, I was sold. I only use three battle stamps (the counter-attack stamp, and the two stun stamps tp and rotten eggs). And the "check every door and fight any monsters that show up" gimmick does get tiring by the end. Also, I wish some of the animations and stuff were skippable.

Still have to do the final boss fight but the game has been fun for the most part.
