THQ announces Fantastic Pets for Kinect
34
What good's a pet lizard if it doesn't morph into a dragon? THQ and Blitz Games will perhaps endanger the welfare of real, ordinary chameleons (color-changing? pfft), tempting children to turn away from their terrariums and step into the world of Fantastic Pets, the so-called "first augmented reality game" for Kinect, coming March 2011.
While Fantastic Pets might start off as an utterly domestic pet sim -- kids pick out a dog, cat, horse or lizard -- dedicated pretend care will eventually expand the game's genus well beyond the apparently tame Kinectimals kingdom. The lines between reality and fantasy will blur as players are transported into the gameworld through commonplace camera technology, barking orders as they command their beasts through mini-games and talents shows. Can your kid suspend disbelief long enough to reach the "professional ranks" of the vaunted Pet Trainer?
"As you discover your pet's personality and become enmeshed within the world, Fantastic Pets becomes more like a personalized adventure and less like a game," says THQ ringmaster Martin Good. But at what point do you break it to the young man? No honey, unicorns ... They've -- they've never been real.

It is inevitable. People always complain about the Wii's shovelware (which there is a mountain of), but do you really think Move and Kinect are going to somehow be free from all the garbage? Bring on the crap!

So I guess all those shovelware titles already being ported over from Wii directly to Playstation Move, somehow don't count?
Face facts, man. The PS Move is practically a Nintendo Wii, just with more accuracy and HD graphics. In laymans' terms, that means EVERY SHOVELWARE GAME EVER MADE ON WII IS EVEN AS WE SPEAK, GETTING PORTED DIRECTLY TO PLAYSTATION MOVE.
Because the Kinect is so different from Move or Wii, you cannot just port all the Wii's shovelware to Kinect, you have to build brand new shovelware from the ground up for Kinect. And believe me, that takes a lot more time and money to do, than just simply porting crappy Wii titles to Move.
So I'm calling it. By reason of the logic, and the understanding that most 3rd party publishers being usually lazy and/or greedy (ie. trying to maximize profits), the PS Move is going to wind up with more shovelware than Kinect.
By this time next year, every bit of shovelware ever made for Wii will be on the PS3 . . . on top of the shovelware built from the ground up for Move.
Sad as it truly is to see, because of Playstation Move's similarity to the Wii-mote and Nunchuck controllers, the PS3 is about to become the most shovelware inundated console in history. Too bad too, as I rather like the PS3 . . .

And the ability to put yourself in the game like EyePet.
It sounds like the game also relies upon a lot of voice control which is something most of the Kinect games have been lacking.
At least Blitz is doing something new that none of the other Kinect games have done so far. Anything that further demos the capabilities of the new hardware is a good thing in my book.

You said it, not me. I was just wondering if they would do something like that. If you have some weird issues to work out that's your deal

Why do games do that? Granted, I've only seen that in Tamagotchi and Nintendogs, but still. Waste of time.

Kinect games really need to be available on demand or on XBLA. What's the point of controlling your Xbox with your voice or waving your hands around if you have to touch it to swap discs?

Give me Kinect-enhanced Viva Pinata instead. And no, I don't mean the party game.

Honestly the concept is more appealing to me than Kinectimals, plus it's got a better name. But, and this is where my negative nancy view of shovelware comes in, it's not the kind of game I'm going to play.

I'm sure the kids would like this as it's written out.
I agree with those above regarding VP. That would be kinda cool

This is for those of you who were thinking, 'Darn, Kinectimals doesn't have enough animal goodness for me, I wish there were more games on Kinect with animal gameplay, but this time I want exotic fantasy creatures'.

This would be better as an augmented reality kind of thing, I'd love to stick my dog in front of the camera and see him sprout wings or shoot fire in game.

It would be neat if they created a pet recognition system for Kinect. My dog fixates on the TV all the time, barks at any animals on the screen and it would be funny if he could play games or interact with something like Kinetimals. I also know a lot of people have cats that like to watch TV and swat at the screen. Of course you wouldn't want to do any of this with a good TV. :D

Don't tell NightmareMoon2010 on youtube that unicorns don't exist! He believes he actually IS one sent here in a human body! One sent to kill us all!
I'd love a pet gryphon, that would be awesome. Games never put in gryphons though.

This is the reason that I don't care about Kinect. I'd much rather play Heavy Rain (and hopefully the next Ratchet and Clank) with motion controls ( PS Move) than pretending to care for animals whilst some camera stalks me and records my every movement.

Sounds fun. Might trade in Kinectimals for this.
