Give Sonic Fan Remix a spin

We're so glad someone finally hit upon the idea of taking classic side-scrolling Sonic the Hedgehog gameplay and updating it with HD graphics. We're talking, of course, about Pelikan13, who has released a demo for Sonic Fan Remix, an unofficial Sonic game for PC.

The demo contains three stages inspired by Sonic 2's Emerald Hill Zone, and seems to have struck a nerve among Sonic fans. At least, it's generated enough interest to overwhelm the original site. You can check out the demo for yourself at this mirror site. Grab it quickly -- both to stay in keeping with Sonic's style and to make sure you have it in case it's taken down.

Message to Sega: pay this guy some money to complete a full game, trash that crap you call Sonic 4, and release this as the new Sonic 4.

I take it you didn't realize everything in Sonic 4 was pretty much a remake of levels in 1 and 2 as well?

The point is it doesn't matter that Fan Remix is a simple remake. The look and feel of this game completely blows away the slippery, ugly mess Sega just released as Sonic 4. This 'engine' if you will, did a better job than a multi-million dollar company with a team of developers at the helm, and Sega should be utterly embarrassed.

I would much rather trash the features and hope Sega could get the controls to feel right and the physics to not be all goofy. They really shouldn't have called it Sonic 4. Just look at how good Capcom made those new Mega Man games without much as far as new features.

@daftsquare Sonic 4 is a great game, you guys are probably all uptight cause you got owned in it left and right.

Sonic 4 is no Sonic & Knuckles the greatest Sonic game of all time.
But it's way better than that fan-crap you guys over rate.

Of course, what could I expect from posters from Joystiq who hate Castlevania Harmony of Despair.

The stages are a bit too busy for my taste, at least for a game, but there's no denying it looks great. What really impresses me, however, are the feel and animations. It really does feel like Sonic 2 physics wise, and Sonic's animations are superb.

I agree, a little too much background actions going on for my tastes.

But the game plays and feels great, too bad its just a demo.

@Dopple Boppler I also agree. Maybe a little distance blur on the background and/or atmospheric lightning (you know how stuff get a little lighter the farther away.
And also pull back the vines on the foreground a little. They are a little much.

But if I wasn't on a mac, i'll be playing it. But from people talking seems they nailed. it.

Oh..My God...That was beautiful and to think this was done by 2 people vs the monkey's at Sonic Team. If this doesn't slap Sonic Team in the face then by all means just hand the rights to these 2 guys I think they deserve it.

If Sega gives an ounce of a shit about this intellectual property anymore they will see this and hire the people that did it.

It's actually very sad that this is better than Sonic 4, but congratulations to the people who are making it.

yeah, that's the funny part, after playing the Sonic 4 demo, i didn't feel the need to buy, but after playing the remix demo, I'd easily hand these dudes 15 bucks. I wonder if they have a paypal account...

The graphics also look really nice.

I can practically feel the Genesis controller in my hands when I watch that video. Perhaps my favorite part? The re-scored original music! Oh yeah!

This game plays/feels/looks WAY better than Sonic 4. Why capcom wouldnt follow this guy's lead is beyond me.
