This Japanese Sonic Free Riders ad is infinitely better than ours
51
Not only does this Sonic Free Riders trailer make the game look more enjoyable and less ... back-breaking than the title's recent U.S. advertisement, it's also indicative of how much better Japan's commercials are than ours. "Have more fun," you say? Don't mind if we do.

Why would Sonic use a car/hoverboard/whatever to go fast?
Posted: Oct 23rd 2010 4:03PM TaintedKane said
@GThang
I know a lot of people say that but maybe he just says to himself. "Screw this I'm tired of running all the time. I something that is pretty fast but a way for me to relax somewhat." Or maybe he wants to be cool again so he steals the Back To The Future hover-board.

I dunno, I think both are pretty interesting. I have Move and have a lot of fun with it, I can't wait to see how well Kinect works.

These commercials are great commentary. Like the American version tried to make the game look epic, while the Japanese one just tried to make it look fun. Considering it's a Sonic game.... this commercial seems to be a tad more realistic, actually.

The funny thing is, watching the American commercial, I didn't know there were all those moves (as shown in the Japanese), because they just concentrated on the male model looking so cool.

I know a lot of people have been ragging on Kinect and it's something I'm skeptical about as well.
But, going to the dentist yesterday gave a bit of a different perspective. All I saw was the little kids waiting for appointments playing Sonic Riders and loving the shit out of it. Seems if it's halfway fun they'll take what's presented to them, regardless if it's Sonic or Mario or whatever.
Having seen a few vids of kinect in action (with the slightly portly Ryan Davis doing fairly well at it, even!) and those kids playing Sonic Riders, if Kinect does even half of what it promises a lot of kids will eat this crap up.
I know it's a just an example that is pretty small and specific to myself but... kinda made me rethink how Kinect will be received regardless about how good or bad we think it is. I just remember a few peeps saying kids won't even play it but... looks like they just might :/

I'd be surprised if the Kinect turns out to be worth it for anything besides dance games and exercise programs. Once the novelty wears off I expect there to be a lot less incentive in it. Then again, Microsoft wants to integrate it into Windows in the future so who knows what it will lead to besides poorly conceived games.
I had the Move and I agree that it sucks too. It's competent, but I would have been just as happy with it not being made. It literally changes nothing atm if you have/had a Wii. The RE patch for it sucked too.
Of course, the major difference between the Kinect and the Move is that I expect that the Move will be worth owning in the future whereas I doubt the Kinect will ever have good software outside of the two genres I mentioned. But both are basically unnecessary at this point in the game.

I think you're missing the point MS is making. They're focusing on family friendly titles because those are easier titles to take chances on. Since Kinect is different than Move & Wii, the innovation will take time to come. That's why they're focusing on Kiddy titles such as Kinectimals & Sonic Free Riders. Once devs have had Kinect for a while interesting things can be introduced & in turn hardcore gaming devs like Bungie & Epic can implement Kinect in a practical way instead of forcing them to use new tech in their next game without any knowledge on how to use it. It's all in due time. It's easy for Sony to slap it on any of their titles since Nintendo paved the way for them to do that.

Can't say I know everything about Japan but I've heard before that they actually interrupt their shows in the middle to get all commercials out of the way at once so I guess a 3 minute commercial wouldn't surprise me in that case.
Can anyone confirm that?

@Mmmmz I agree to a point, but I have to tell you, we've been having a great time with the Move system. While the idea is exactly like the Wii, it's the actual Wii's tech that seems more like an afterthought. Two different technologies - Move far superior, but Wii has the advantage of being on the market longer, thus having a larger library (90% being..well anyway).
As for Kinect, I think this tech is far too interesting to dismiss as some gimmick or non-supported peripheral (not directing this at you btw). The launch games are admittedly unspectacular, but should be somewhat fun with a group, and it's different enough to the competition to feel like something new and different. I'm sure many developers are looking real serious into supporting Kinect. Not every game will feature running, jumping and dancing.. just the idea of transparent overlay of icons can give you access to all sorts of commands for many types of games.
A lot of people are just having fun bashing kinect because they don't see the big picture (or are 12-17 year olds who are trying desperately to appear adult).

Sorry but saying you saw it in action does not count if you didn't try it. I have tried it and it's a lot of fun. Personally I feel that all sports games should be made for Kinect because after trying Kinect sports I was convinced. Playing Vollyball and table tennis was so awesome especially Vollyball. I'm definately getting this at launch and Sonic will be on my list too.
