Elemental purchases before Oct. 31 to receive first two expansions free

Elemental: War of Magic's road to redemption is being paved with free stuff -- for those willing to take the ride. Stardock CEO Brad Wardell announced today on the game's forums that anyone who purchases (or already bought) the game before October 31, 2010, will receive the first two expansions to the game for free.
The company has been working to turn around the game's "disastrous" launch by showing it plans not to abandon the 4X strategy title. A major sign of support came earlier this month when Stardock hired Derek "Kael" Paxton as the studio's senior producer. Paxton is the creator of the popular Civilization über-mod Fall from Heaven.
Stardock plans to begin the beta testing of Elemental version 1.1 in early November. Owners of the game have the option to opt-in and find out how Elemental is evolving.
[Thanks, Chris P.]

So can someone explain to me what's so horrible about this game?
Have they patched/fixed it at all or is it still a brutal piece of shit at this point?
I was pretty interested with the gameplay mechanics when I watched a few dev videos so I still might try to grab a cheap copy if it's worth playing at this point, or later when they fix it up.

I would also like to know this and also, as a fan of Sins, would I like this game?

I've been following this on their forums for a while, because I was so hyped for this.
They've put more work into fixing it than any other game, because they want it to be what it should have been. There's been around 7 patches or so, and the game is shaping up well. Apparently, there's going to be a huge 1.1 patch that adds a lot of stuff coming in the next few weeks.
If you are interested in this type of game, I would consider picking it up cheap, like you said, before the 31st, that way you can get the 2 expansions for free. This is what I'm going to do :)

There have been a few horrendous releases that ended up getting patched into a masterpiece. It doesn't happen often, and its usually because of the publisher pushing the developer but not always. And in the cases I'm thinking of it ended up being a great game. I think elemental will follow this. Combat Mission: Shock Force, Half-Life 2, and Operation Flashpoint (all versions including Arma lol) are good examples.

Gotta applaud their effort for recognizing a mistake and actually doing something to rectify it as opposed to sweeping it under the rug or blaming someone else.
I wonder if combat will look more exciting/the close up terrain less bare after the new patches
