yeah, awesome times... times when they gave you the game complete and with no excuses of a " we will fix it with the next expansion which is going to cost you BTW" .... when endings where true endings and you didn“t have to pay for the real ending which are now called "epilogues"...man i miss that.......

I got a PS2 hella-late to the party (only four years ago) but after getting my hands on Devil May Cry 3, God of War 2, Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Colossus and a handful of other amazing games, it totally changed the way I had thought about gaming up until then. My previous consoles had all be SEGA and Nintendo 'til that point. I consider the PS2 to be the second-greatest console of all time, right behind the SNES.

Wow, that's even better than my lowest price story. A few months ago, I managed to find Space Channel 5: Special Edition for $2.50 . . . but my joy deflated when I opened it and discovered that this "new" game was a resealed return whose Disc 1 had been kept by the previous buyer. So, I got half a PS2 release for $2.50 (which was, ironically, the half-off markdown of the $5 ring-up price).

Other great PS2 game prices from my collection: GitS:SAC, R-Type Final, and Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2, all for $5 each (new!). I actually still haven't opened the Viewtiful Joes.

Also, I, too, bought my PS2 only about 4 years ago. It was Black Friday 2006, when I also bought my Game Boy micro. However, I had been buying PS2 games since early 2005, to safeguard against the games I wanted to play disappearing from store shelves by the time the PS2 actually dropped to the $100 I was willing to pay (I'm a really stingy guy; that Game Boy micro was a $35 doorbuster deal, FYI). Little did I know Sony wouldn't actually drop it to $100 until last year, so, fortunately, my sister offered to buy me the PS2 as a 2006 Christmas gift. I brought the system home but didn't open it until sometime in January 2007 (my $100 GameCube, bought in late 2004, kept me busy in the meantime). By the time I opened the PS2 and started using it, I already had around 25 PS2 games (and 9 PS1 games--I've never had a PS1 at all, so they were as unplayed as their PS2 shelfmates).

The first two PS2 games I ever bought were Shadow Hearts and Cy Girls. The first PS2 games I ever *saw played*, meanwhile, were Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X, by a college friend years earlier. Cy Girls' trailers' resemblance in my mind to MGS2 were what prompted me to buy it, despite the reviews, along with the fact that Mari Iijima voiced one of the leads. I bought Shadow Hearts, which was actually already rare by then, because I was enamored of the then-recent Shadow Hearts: Covenant's gameplay footage.

I should probably note that I *usually* start buying games for a system before I actually buy the system itself. That Game Boy micro came home to find two GBA games already waiting for it.

@Mach2 I was late as well, I had a DC because I loved Sega and its consoles but one day it was stolen. Since I stil blamed Sony, I held out a month until the Xbox came out and loved Halo and KOTOR until it died from a power surge. Luckily I had friend who sold me his phat PS2 for $40 since he ended up getting a slim.
My ignorance was holding me back from playing some of the greatest games ever. GoW1&2, SOTC, MGS3, FFXII, etc..
This gen once again I pushed Sony to the back burner since the Xbox had more games in the beginning, I finally bit last year once games like Uncharted 2, MGS4, KZ2 came out.
Sony I'll never doubt you again, sure you may have your problems like anyone, but I know you in the long run you will treat me the best.

But oh well. I remember getting it for its DVD playback. Plus I was short on cash for any games at launch. Also the blue box was super sexy.

My ps2 has been broken for quite a while, it won't read discs. I'm too lazy to throw it out and I can't let myself spend so much money on a system that I "might" use again one day. It does make me sad to think about my Final Fantasy Collection just sitting there with no possible way to play them...hmm. The newer slim ps2's have backwards compatibility right?

I still have unopened PS2 games (God of war 2 and stretch panic), due to a sheer lack of time. I'll open them when i can enjoy them uninterupted. I have to say also, the ps2 is the sturdiest system I've owned since the SNES, it's still working where my n64, gamecube, xbox all died.

I think it's funny how the US playstation blog feed said the ps2 was the first to introduce online play though. Guess they pushed the dreamcast right out of there minds with all that success. Hell, even the xband counted as online play right?

We all have games like that, waiting for when we can seriously play them. My pile just seems to grow, I look at it as...to borrow a term heard from Sony, future proofing! ;P Though I finally started playing the Castlevainia reboot on wiiware that I bought...many moons ago.

re your last comment about online gaming, the SNES had the stellaview or something of the sort, there were weekly episodes of the Zelda BS game broadcast on the network, so early 90's.

I got a PS2 for Christmas '02. I also scored Metal Gear Solid 2 for it and GTA3. I was so excited about playing it, whenever my mom left to run errands, I would pull it out of the christmas gift pile, unpack it (making sure not to damage the Sony Seal on the lip) and play as much as I could before she got home.

Such an amazing christmas that year. Considering I got the GameCube for my birthday earlier in the year (with Smash Bros. and Tony Hawk 3), last-gen of gaming was too good. You could even say it was mind-blasting.

Never owned or even played a PS2.
