I haven't seen any Castlevania posts in a while. You must have been waiting for a long time to say this.

+1 and I completely agree. It's like saying every RPG is a Dragon quest or Final Fantasy rip off (or pen and paper RPG if you want to go back that far). That and God of War and Shadow of the Colossus were not the first games of its genre. Castlevania is actually a really good game and didn't feel like a copy cat to me.

Firstly this patch has made it so my controller won't enter commands into the game. Works fine outside of it.

@ God of War fans: Bad news for you - the God of War dev team even admitted to stealing their play style from Castlevania: Lament of innocence. But please, keep being ironic :)

No sir, that would require removing all the fun, downgrading the engine and replacing entire game with useless item grind and 1hitable bosses ;P

Yeah . . . Symphony of the Night wasn't better.
Sorry brah, old doesn't always mean better. Get over your nostalgia and enjoy the game.

I find Dawn of Sorrow almost unplayable due to the terrible "Saturday morning cartoon" look of the characters. I wish I could simply forget that it and Portrait of Ruin ever existed.

Wow, took them long enough, bout this game 2 days after it dropped but decided to read some reviews AFTER I BOUGHT IT(stupid I know).
Decided not to play until they patched it... I been hearing mixed reviews n people saying gow/soc clone, but honestly even if it is, it sounds like that would def be kick-ass!

@Chazzr no its not the patch you were looking for

Besides, this isnt a metroidvania, its a Castelvania in the old fashion with some upkept

Remember, before Symphony of the Night, Castelvania was a linear platformer. With Vampire Kiss/Rondo of Blood/Castelvania 5/Dracula X, alternative routes/endings/upgrades/objectives were introduced, breathing life to the franchise, but after SotN it was radically diverted. While bout Castlevanias on the N64 kept a old fashion linear castelvania feel, on PS2 tried a metroidvania feel, and while i liked those, i'm loving way more lord of shadows, they did the right thing on focusing on platforming, linear gameplay, while they added some upgrade system, which have us going back for some little more exploration

i'm lucky not have had my saved data wiped out, but even if it had i wouldn't be too bummed, this game is awesome. i'd gladly run thru the earlier levels again. while it definitely shares a lot with GoW, Uncharted and (to a lesser extent) SotC, i'm enjoying it more than any of the GoW games, party because the subject matter is more my taste and because the combat has a better feel imo. if they can bring some more "Metroidvania" exploration into the sequel, they'll have a near-perfect recipe for vampire-killing action!

Have you played Castlevania Lament of Innocence? The combat isn't as deep but it has that "Metroidvania" feel. Also the music is REALLY good.

I really don't understand the people singing this games praises, to me the whole thing felt like a weaker god of war with pointless and tedious platforming. There were a lot of annoying immersion breaking inconsistencies in the environment and character interaction, the game reused the same encounters way too often and controlls that didnt say contextual with the camera. Overall it felt like a run of the mill combat platformer that would have been just fine 7 years ago but a lot of the problems have been ironed out since in the genre and the whole thing just feels dated.

7 years ago? That's before the first God of War was released!

I don't think the game is perfect in every regard (the pacing in the first half could have been better, and as great as Patrick Stewart is, he's a bit overused) but I'll defend it, especially for the latter half's story and environments. Like the original Castlevania was a monster mash drawing from multiple sources and never invented anything new, it put different elements together into an attractive package. Drawing from the likes of God of War, Uncharted, and Shadow of the Colossus and fusing them into a single experience is hardly cause to complain, in my book.

I'm looking forward to the announced sequel.

I think the save thing might be part of why haven't really liked this game so much. I'm only a little ways into the second chapter, but it still hasn't caught me yet. Not worrying about my save might help, though.

Yeah, the early going does kind of lack in urgency, as far as motivation goes. I think it was a mistake to start out with Gabriel already on his quest without explanation. Some prologue would have been nice, I think.

But play to the end of chapter 3. It's a very short chapter, really meant as the end of the first act. Things pick up from there.

Heh. I'm hoping my data's safe, as I haven't had the time to start it up in about a week (my time got Vanquish'd). Today was the day I was going to get back to it too, so great timing Konami!.

Even with the save bug, I couldn't stop playing. I just backed my game up at about every 10%. Stopped at 80% and had an 8 hour sitting to Platinum just so I didn't lose my save. Love this game, want sequel.

While I disagree that making it a Symphony of the night is a downgrade, I am glad that Lords of Shadow broke the 3D castlevania curse, and actually made the best castlevania game since Symphony of the Night. I will still pop in and play SoTN for the 19th time, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't look forward when it comes to the series.

This game is neither castle nor vania. Throwing in some random names in the series does not a Castlevania make.

This game wasn't even a castlevania game in development. Konami bought it and stamped the name onto it.
