Jax returns to Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat creative lead Ed Boon took to GameTrailers TV last night in order to reveal the latest character for the forthcoming series reboot: Jax. For the handful of you who've never made the acquaintance of the metal-armed gentleman, his Christian name is Jackson Briggs and he was first introduced in Mortal Kombat 2. Though he didn't end up with metal arms until Mortal Kombat 3, he'll be appearing in next year's MK fully kitted out.

As for more characters in the series being revealed, Boon teases the final roster, saying, "It's gonna be somewhere in the 20s, but we don't have a final number." He also points out that DLC will bring more characters to the game's lineup, so you hardcore Noob Saibot fans can relax.

I dunno, I half expect that if I saw him in person his face would never change from how I see it in the avatar. Regardless of what angle I see it from or what he's doing; almost like an NBA Jam character but with less facial options.

Also it says Jax returns, but did he ever really leave. I thought it was given he would be in or already confirmed at least.

"He also points out that DLC will bring more characters to the game's lineup". I really hate stuff like this. If it is intended to bring these characters to the game (and I'm sure it has already been discussed internally which ones will be brought in later), why aren't they already in there? This nickel and diming for "extra" content that shouldn't be extra is really just getting frustrating anymore.

Don't worry, it will be just like the MK vs DC extra DLC characters...it will be aborted because they will focus the next MK game.

@XperimntNterror agree, loved the times where you get a full game for the actual retail price, I don't mind getting new stuff as long as it extends a game already complete, but not to include stuff that should be on launch date just to get more profit

think about this: remakes usually include extra stuff, extra chars, extra dungeons, extra something... in the future, you'll get a remake at retail price only including the remake of the game itself with no extra stuff, and then they will sell you the extra stuff via DLC... SSSSSSUCKS

As long as the "core" and fan favorites are there (Kabal, Jade, Fujin, Ermac, Kenshi, Frost, Noob Saibot, etc.) I don't think there is a problem.

If the DLC characters are Tanya, Bo Rai, Shinnok, Darrius I really couldn't care less then.

@XperimntNterror I think it's because the Xbox 360 can't handle what the PS3 can, so instead of all on one disc they have to make DLC. This was a big problem for Final Fantasy XIII, and maybe will end up being one for Metal Gear Solid Rising.

@XperimntNterror i don't mind legitimate content that is adding extra value and play time (i will absolutely buy that stuff: Borderlands DLC, as an example), but saying "hey! wanna play this same game and same modes but with sub-zero instead! Give us $5 and you can do just that! what a bargain! Unlock him from the disc now (errrr... we mean, "download")" or "use this exclusive code for your day one purchase of this game to unlock a sword, shield and six potions!! this is a limited time offer to new game purchasers only. anyone else is going to have to pay us extra for this DLC, so don't miss out and pre-order this shit NOW!!!!", is really just bullshit.

of course, i always figured this is what "DLC" would eventually turn into on consoles.

So if I'm understanding you correctly FF13 sucked donkey balls not because of the story or the game play but rather because the 360 couldn't handle its awesomeness the way the ps3 and Metal Gear: Rising could very well suck balls as well.

@XperimntNterror seriously people...what's difference between new characters as DLC and new songs for rock band as dlc or new maps for halo/call of duty/battlefield as dlc? Adding more characters involves extra development.

Besides, they never said anything about it being PAID DLC just dlc.

@Huma what would be really egregious is if they named that character so that his name rhymed with Tyson. And then to cover it up do a name swap between three different characters.

Am I the only one who never cared for Jax? Compared to ninjas that manipulate ice or gods who throw around thunder-bolts, I've always kind of found him underwhelming.

@jumpshot same here. Jax, Sonya, Johnny Cage, Kano and even Liu Kang have always been kind of boring to me as characters and on my list of least favored.

I actually liked Jax and his human counterparts. I mean I love the ninjas too but I do like at least the diversity of the characters in MK. The only character off hand that I remember hating with a passion is Mavado. I thought he was an absolute peace of crap. I at least like it that they do try to mix up I mean I look at this to be Mortal Kombat not Ninja Kombat.

@jumpshot Yeah, I get that the ninjas can get sam-ey, but they at least have a nice variety of abilities. It just sucks that they are all identical, like there's a law or something.

But most ninjas are not immortal, so I think they still apply ;)

My reason for bringing this up is that if they are keeping a low character count (relative to the series), IMHO, there are far better choices than Jax out there. But then, it IS just my opinion.

@Chibi Chaingun ha ha, yeah, basically. I would be OK with a ninja-only spinoff title for the series. I mean, 50% of the roster are ninjas, anyway, so you'd have plenty to work with. ninjas just = cool in my book.

@jumpshot Dude Jax was pimp...you know the ultimate insult in arcade play (back when MK3 was in arcades) would be to play as Jax and pull off is quadruple slam (had to press two different buttons for each slam in the sequence).

Doing the 10 hit combo with him or sheva was also demoralizing.

I was hoping for Ratchet.
