Rumor: Kinect beta testers can keep sensor, get free Kinect Adventures
65
According to an image sent to Joystiq by an anonymous tipster, it looks like Microsoft is rewarding all the participants of the Kinect beta program. A letter, purportedly written by Xbox Live VP Marc Whitten, is offering to let testers to keep their Kinect sensor now that the beta program is over. In addition, testers will also receive a code to redeem a free download of Kinect Adventures. We're attempting to verify with Microsoft, but it certainly makes sense. After all, it stands to reason that some testers won't want to part with their sensor and be reticent to send it back to Microsoft. It wouldn't be a stretch for people to suddenly "lose" their sensor either.
We'll update this post if we receive word from Microsoft.

While that is pretty generous of them, what else would they do with the sensor? It's not like they can repackage them and sell them. It would probably cost them more to track down the users and get them shipped back than they could make selling them used.
Give it to the users! Increase the install base. The value (and cost) of each user's feedback was probably far, far greater anyway.

@johnjohn122 what are you talking about ? Of course thats how preorders work..
pre-orders are completely dependant on how many units a company can provide to the retailer.. How does it work ? The retailer pre-order stock that they dont have ? So when it comes to meeting the pre order obligations they actually end up not meeting the demand.. ?

Cause, you know, its totally a great business decision for MS to deliberatly cripple the number of Kintec units in homes and avaliable overall during the biggest shopping day and season of the year.
Kintec LAUNCHES 3 weeks before Black Friday. Given that MS is probably making a very small amount of profit on each sensor (this is just my educated guessing) they are going to want to push as much software out the door as possible. Which is hard to do when no one has your hardware. An artificial shortage only makes sense when you have something you are sure is going to be a big hit, and when its done during the correct time. A product as new and risky as Kintec launching during NOVEMBER of all months does not meet these requirements.

@R Planteer there doesn't seem to be any shortages of the games for kinect or 360 consoles bundled with kinect just the kinect controller.
Its completely feasible to make a short batch run and only provide a pre-order limit of x amount. It will only serve to boost the hype, only to come back in stock a week or two after launch. Perfect timing if you ask me.
If they were not confident in the product, they would not spend 1/2 billion advertising it.. Either way we will know a week or two after launch ..

I would keep it, but I might still buy a Kinect. After all, it's a prototype Kinect. If your Kinect was faulty in some sort of way you won't even experience the full use of the product.

They probably updated the software; not the actual build of the product. It's great pre-launch.

@McDuckScrooged I'm pretty sure the units allocated for pre-order to most retailers was somewhere along the lines of 50x the amount you implied, if not larger for some retailers.
