Sony Corporation has released its earnings report for the second quarter of its 2010 fiscal year, and among the highlights is the performance of its Networked Products & Services division, which is composed of PlayStation and its PC offerings. Always a strong component of the company, the division once again showed growth, bringing in ¥369 billion ($4.6 billion) in revenue, up five percent from the ¥352 billion ($4.3 billion) earned in the same period last year.
Looking at hardware sales, PS3 shipments rose slightly over Q2 of FY 2009, totaling 3.5 million units versus 3.2 million the year before, a change of 9.3 percent. In its report, Sony cites "strong performance of PS3 significant hardware cost reductions and higher sales," elsewhere briefly mentioning that sales "benefited from the introduction of PlayStation Move in the current quarter." PS3 software sales were up 10 million units for the quarter, or 40 percent, totaling 35 million units versus 25 million for Q2 FY 2009.
Yesterday, Microsoft announced that shipments of Xbox 360 for the first quarter of its 2011 fiscal year had grown by 25 percent over the same time last year. While it may seem like 360 is pummeling PS3, it's important to note that Sony's console hasn't seen a hardware refresh since the PS3 slim's introduction last year; the Xbox 360 S launched just prior to Microsoft's Q1 FY 2011.
The picture Sony's earnings report paints for the PSP is anything but encouraging. Sales of the handheld dropped to 1.2 million units for the quarter, down from 3 million during the same period in FY 2009, a decrease of 50 percent. PSP software sales were down -- albeit far less dramatically -- 15 percent, with 11 million units sold during the quarter compared to 13 million the previous year. Despite the handheld's lower performance this year versus last, Sony is only projecting a 20 percent overall drop in sales for the year, projecting sales of eight million units versus the 10 million in FY 2009. Still, if signs of a new platform in the PlayStation Phone weren't enough to signal the end of PSP's era, these numbers only make it clearer.

@rambo8 One problem is that GT5 is the only one of those games that people will buy a PS3 for, LB2 might pull an Uncharted 2 and do well based on word of mouth, but Resistance and KillZone do really don't have much appeal beyond people who already have a PS3. Twisted Metal is kind of an unknown quality since its been years since that game was good.
The other problem is half of those games were supposed to come out this year for their holiday sales. This isn't going to be great Holiday season for PS3 they don't have any killer exclusives. Move will help, but I don't think it will appeal to people the same way that Kinect will. I think Kinect will do well with the same Non-gamer crowd that bought the Wii.

That's good PS3 sales has been improving. It deserves the success. I think Sony is gonna have a killer Holiday season w/ GT5 releasing and next year is gonna be crazy. So far, Sony's 2011 line-up looks stellar and looks like trouble for the competition. I can't wait to see what other exclusive/features Sony will be bring to the PS3 next year.
It's time for Sony to announce a price cut for the reg PSPs. Its $170 and $200 for last 2-3 years. I think it's about that time now.
Come on Sony. You can do it!
By the way, I think Sony will completely unveil the PS phone either @ GDC or CES.

@MLC PSP should be $120 at this point.....$150 if bundled with a game or 2.....I mean I/m pretty sure it cost a bit less than $100 to make at this point....and they would damn near fly off the shelves at that price...

I think 2010 for Sony other than GOW really wasn't a great year for them. 2011 on the other hand might be.

PSP sales dropped because PSP2 is coming and gamers know it.....
glad to see the PS3 is still doing well....tho I am curious to see what the current console count is...I have a feeling the 360 isn't that many consoles ahead of the PS3 anymore....that 9 million unit gap has got to have dwindled down by now...maybe to 7 million or less

Last time just recently on examiner.com the difference was about 3mil.
Amazing the 360 has held up so well considering the lack of high quality exclusives and pay to play scheme. Next 2 years for the 360 will be dull as usual just like the previous 2 years before this year. Probably no more than1-2 highly touted exclusive each year most likely for the next 2 years.
PS3 is consistently bringing out a bunch of high quality exclusives every year. Next year PS3's list of highly wanted games dwarfs the competitions. Next year the PS3 should pull ahead of the 360 in overall sales but even if it doesn't the system has been overall the better console for the last 2-3 years easy.

Microsoft still gets a boost from multiplat releases and XBox Live. That last one is the big one though. I still hear people say, "I got the 360 because everyone's on Live."

@Brother Unit No 4 I have it because xbla is so much better than psn's offerings. Also, indie games. I love smaller, cheaper games.

IMO, PS3 hasn't been selling well because of the bad PR surrounding the OtherOS removal because of "piracy" when a lot knew that wasn't an issue in the first place. Then to not fess up and return it just left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.
Companies use the piracy excuse as much as the government uses the terrorism excuse. Nobody wanted to pirate when they had linux; now they do it out of spite. I personally do not have the time to download a 25+GB game nor the HDD space to keep it.

I pretty much suspected the PS3 would have a bump in sales over last year based on the slim momentum, but I noticed no actual revenue/profit/loss was mentioned unless I missed it somewhere. But that information will eventually trickle out.
The move is interesting, but I think it's going to lie/die by the quality and quantity of software available for it. If Sony can keep releases coming-- it'll be great. The initial offerings we ho-hum. Nothing we hadn't already seen before. My biggest worry is that it's ends up being another eyetoy.
I wouldn't imagine there would be a hardware refresh this soon, but Sony has managed to introduce new configurations and bundles.
Sony's biggest hurdle for the immediate term will be the economy.

I don't see it mentioned here, but Engadget just posted that Sony made a profit of $852 million USD in Q2. So that's over a billion in profit the first two quarters. That's pretty damn good considering they lost so much money the last couple of years and have to deal with the same exchange rate issues that Nintendo does. Seems almost strange to see Sony posting big profits while Nintendo posts a loss. It's been the opposite for the entire generation up to this point.

Yeah, but comparing Sony as a company to Nintendo as a company isn't really fair. For example, I'd like to know what the NPS division actually lost, not how they've improved over last year or last quarter.

Ever since I got Valkyria Chronicles 2 for the PSP, the only gaming I do is on the PSP. 50+ hours logged and counting.
