Maybe it's just me but I see this as a last ditch effort to encourage STO.

@Mama Luigi

Cheap way to pad out content for something which shouldn't need padding when it's not even a year old.

Cryptic doesn't develop CoH anymore. It's Paragon Studios, and they were the team that came up with Mission Architect for CoH...

With hearing about Champions Online going free to play, it wouldn't surprise me too much if they decided to do the same for this one. I totally admit that if this were free to play, I'd be so much more inclined to give it more of a shot, if only because I'm not forking out $15 a month to get disappointed. There's not much to it, but equal price for equal value, you know? This thing just isn't worth the box plus monthly payment.

Not everyone is disappointed with STO. I've enjoyed it since the beta. I found that I had to invest some imagination in the game to get the most out of it. I'm looking forward to player created episodes. That said, placing a negative spin on allowing the player community to be creatively invested in the games content is really imaginative if not a bit creepy.

STO will most certainly go free to play. I am looking forward to that as well. A monthly fee as a barrier for entry almost feels antiquated. Especially for any mmo that is not WoW.

From the source article "The Foundry toolset currently needs beta testing. If you have an existing Star Trek Online account you qualify."

There doesn't appear to be an application process.

I've been a lifer on STO since launch and just recently hit max rank... and this seems like a pretty fun way of bolstering the game's content on top of the weekly missions (which I have a blast with with my small Fleet). One of the coolest parts is that you can manufacture missions that involve interacting with characters in public areas like Earth Space Dock.
Seems to me that user generated content + rating system = win

@RogueEnterprise 99% of the missions will be shit, so it's not like you're actually going to get much out of it. STO would have better luck just having a contest and hiring the best people/teams.

@BigD145 Yeah, possible, hence the rating system. 10,000 missions generated x 1% (assuming your estimate is accurate) = 100 missions... that's a lot of play time. For me at least.

I think it's a good idea- I've been playing the game for a while and I'm looking forward to trying out some of the missions that users make even though I'm not even close to maxing out my character. I think it's a great way to add some variety to the game. Can't hurt to try anyway. =)
