Perhaps you don't like playing first-person shooters on consoles, because you think controls can't get any better than a keyboard and mouse. Or maybe you won't play first-person shooters on the PC because you're worried about the price of hardware upkeep. Splitfish hopes to cater to both possibilities with its FragFX Shark controller combo.
The packaging bills it as a "competition-style FPS mouse combo controller," yet I see it more as an effort to cross that great divide. Think about how long you've championed the respective control scheme of your preferred platform. Is there really no room for improvement? Can you not learn or adapt in some way to the controls of "those guys?" Because of how much it crams into the package, the Shark honestly feels like the best of both worlds.
In the right hand, you've got a mouse with face buttons on the left side. In the left hand, you've got a wireless controller that feels like the Nintendo Nunchuk, albeit boasting more buttons. But a lot of these buttons handle functionality for the unit as a whole -- the custom button mapping, stick swapping, rapid fire and "macro" functionality.
Macro is kind of a misleading term. This particular feature lets users set a gesture-based command inside of the combo controller. For example, when playing Modern Warfare 2 (the only game available to test the unit with) I set it to handle melee attacks, but it could be used to set grenade throws or, well, anything. So yeah, there's an accelerometer jammed in there too.
You'd think that with the limited real estate and all of these buttons, nubs and whatchamacallits crammed in there, it'd feel like a crowded mess, but it really doesn't. With three large shoulder buttons on top of the combo controller (one handles the button remapping, so it's not in constant use), the left hand is more than capable of handling everything on the combo controller. And because of the placement of the buttons on the left side of the mouse, the right thumb easily reaches those. In terms of functionality, it gets the job done and doesn't feel too overbearing.
Don't get me wrong: there's definitely a learning curve here and it's steep, but after overcoming that, this control method proves itself as one of the more responsive ways to play an FPS on the console. It's certainly not for everyone, but I feel like the custom button mapping and device design, as well as the hardware sensitivity customization on top of in-game sensitivity settings, offer a depth of control you can't simply get on your stock controller. You can do drop shots much quicker with this than with a controller, users can tweak different rapid fire settings outside of just a turbo toggle switch (rapid fire sniper rifle, anyone?) and create a completely custom control scheme playing to their own individual strengths or weaknesses, provided you're a righty.
The Splitfish FragFX Shark controller is available starting today for an MSRP of $89.99.

that has more to do with microsoft than it does with splitfish. Notice the Mouse/Keyboard support on PS3 that goes as far back as unreal tournament 3. It's a microsoft imposed limit

the 360 has a version called the Frag N Stein. You should be able to google it. If not I think the company that makes it is Blanco.

ok, but how precise is it?

I have an FX2 here and on that one it depends on the sensitivity.
On lower sensitivities it's very accurate, but when you go above a certain threshold it's like it snaps onto a grid and you can't really use it anymore. But if you're fine with (in my eyes) a bit of travel distance it works very well

Terrible name. Sounds like a fine way to control and to take advantage of a multiplayer game, haha.

Lets you use a Mouse & Keyboard on the 360. Mouse aiming + the aim assist naturally found in console shooters, is just all kinds of unfair. The guys not even particularly great with a mouse and he still completely pubstomps.
I want one.

90's too steep for me. Granted this would make MAG much more enjoyable I'd rather they not limited keyboard and mouse controls when in games.

Am I the only one who would like this on the PC rather than a console?
Keyboard movement and strafing is just so imprecise. I would love a one handed controller instead.

I'd rather go through the trouble of PC gaming.
And yes, I have tried one of these, it's a step up from a controller, but not as good as K/B and Mouse on a comp.

Oh hell, this is exactly what I want right now on my gaming desktop, a way to combine the precision of mouse aiming with the versatility of joystick movement. I wish it wasn't 90$, because this would be an immediate purchase from me otherwise.

@ouenwoof I own a previous model (the one right before this one) and it's great for console games (hand>thumbs for precision), but it's NOT a mouse.
It emulates a mouse on high sensitivity in the sense that if I move my hand up it makes my character look up. The lack of micro-movements on any setting, which is THE reason for using a mouse, makes this fairly hard to use as a replacement for a mouse and makes it on par with console controllers.
To be blunt, playstation FPS that utilize Move function better than the older models but I suspect the problems of precision still remain.
Also, I always had a slight delay between action and act. Again, it made it frustrating.

Because that's completely not just misinformation and PC gamers still have to worry about that. -_-

My only question is:
What are the chances this thing will still work after the next firmware update? Or maybe 2 or 3 firmware updates in the future?
If it's not officially supported by Sony can't they just shut it down any time?

This is bringing a gun to a knife fight. As said above this+joypad auto aim gives you a total advantage over non-cheats.
This is no better than rapid fire mods, lag switching or any other kind of cheating.
You wanna play K+M, play on a PC. I don't want to be chained to a desk to play. If you are playing on a console, you should learn how to play console style. Get some skills.

And my gaming screen is a 42 inch 1080p HD screen, should I trade it in for something smaller and lower resolution so that I don't have an "unfair advantage" over the average gamer's screen? A bad controller may hamper an otherwise good player, but a good controller won't make a bad player good.

How is the speed/sensitivity of the mouse aiming? I have the original FragFX, but it's definitely not nearly as nice as a PC mouse (I used it for 7 days of playing time for MW2 and BFBC2 each).
And while the wires are a bit of a pain, how many batteries does this thing take?
I never bothered playing FPS on my PS3 until I got one of these though, can't stand the PS controller for it.

How does this compare to the FRAGnStein or FragX? And does it support rumble on either the mouse or nunchuck?

The fragFX shark is the supreme being in my collection at the moment - I have never been a fan of the fragnstein (mostly because it just is not that good - but doubly because they were busted for copying Splitfish Tech and are a bit slimy) - and I do not have any idea what the FragX is - what is that?
I don't have the retail FRAGFX SHARK - but I have a beta and it is a huge step up from some of the past Splitfish gear. No rumble - (and I am pretty sure the retail is the same) but the performance of the mouse is super accurate and fast as hell. The other peatures for programming are all set up on the chuck and really easy to initiate - the button swap is the best feature for me, but you have macros, turbo setups and stick swap. It's a plug and play for mac and pc too - and definitely holds its own as a gaming mouse. My buddy just got his order yesterday, so they are shipping them out already. The battery life is un frickn real - seriously. I have used it 30/40 hrs without replacing my recharges. 1 AA in each.
