Few would describe God of War 3 as an abridged action-adventure. "I would say we cut less" compared to the previous games, director Stig Asmussen told 1UP in a video interview covering the topic of the game's "deleted scenes." Still, cut they did.
"There were a couple of big moments that we lost," Asmussen recounted. "We had a [water-based] puzzle with this guy named Ixion [...] He was a really cool character. The inspiration was -- I don't remember his name -- but he was the flying guy from The Road Warrior." The objective, of course, was to drown Ixion.
"The big cut," Asmussen then revealed, "was the end of the game" -- an unpolished, three-way rumble between Gaia, Zeus and Kratos (pictured). "It was a tough cut, but it's something that needed to be done."
Hear more from Asmussen and producer Steve Caterson and see alpha footage of the deleted scenes in the video embedded after the break.

the flying guy from the Road Warrior was a lovable comic relief. Why does Kratos want to kill EVERYTHING?

now if only they had cut that segment of the game where you solve a "puzzle" using the playstation buttons. laaaame.

indeed. that is really my only gripe with god of war iii. otherwise it was just another great god of war game, but that segment felt really lame and unnecessary to me, and the fact that they felt compelled to put the playstation buttons in there (for whatever reason) felt forced. i'm not sure if that was some sony execs idea or what, but did they realize how stupid and out-of-place it looked in a supposed greek setting?

They said they really liked the idea, but couldn't come up with a way to present it differently that was still clear on what exactly the player was supposed to do. So rather than cut it entirely, they "tried" to make the buttons blend into the architecture and setting. They failed.
Otherwise, God of War III was epic on epic-roids filled with epic and wrapped in epic.

Sometimes it makes me wonder why they cut alot of stuff.
Resident Evil 5 comes to mind every time now. When I look at the story boards they had for RE5, and they changed it all up - I want to find whoever came up with the idea to do so and SMACK them.
Instead of an epic fight involving a jet and killing Wesker with the rockets in it, we got an action packed one-on-one with a huge ass rock followed by a lame helicopter rocket scene.

@Omega2822 both of those sound as lame as the other.

@Omega2822 If they don't set themselves a hard deadline and commit to it, the game will take forever to finish. Case in point, Gran Tourismo 5, which is a clear case of developers wanting to be perfectly happy with a game before shipping, albeit at the cost of a timely release.
If they left in everything they wanted at the beginning, the development process would be considerably longer I imagine.

i would love to see more of these behind the scenes type segments included with more games, similar to what was included on the bonus disc with God of War 2.

You know, if there were aggressive cuts to any of the God of War games, I'd say they were well-warranted. It's a rare game that manages to hit the continuity and pacing as well as those games do.

@acceptablerisk I agree. When I play a GOW game I almost never think "this shouldn't be here" or "this is unnecessary." They really have a knack for making a tight, engaging game.

As a huge God of War fan, GoW3 was an incredible disappointment. The worst in the series in my opinion. That said, a finale boss fight that is actually worthy of the series, such as that three way battle with perhaps a bit more going on, would've gone a long way I think. The last fight with Zeus was the worst boss in the series.
But, even if they did that, the story would've still been pretty wank tbh.

Best? Buhuhuhuh... Prettiest, yes. Biggest spectacle, yes. Best gameplay, arguably. But the narrative was an absolute train wreck.
Also, and this is just personal opinion, Pandora is by far the least endearing, most annoying character I've ever had the misfortune of hand holding in a video game. Broad was more screamy than Kate Capshaw in Temple of Doom.

Actually, I thought the narrative was quite good, and it wrapped up the series really nicely. It was more complex, yet still understandable. And I didn't share your dislike for Pandora, she was fine, and she brought out the human side of Kratos.

that final three-way boss fight should not have been cut. The final battles were underwhelming and repetitive and had a been there done that feel from GOW2. Especially since this is the supposed end of the trilogy the final boss battle should've been the epic boss battle to end all GOW boss battles. Maybe they set the bar too high with the Poseidon/Cronos battles but still I wouldve waited gladly for and epic boss send off.
If anything they should've cut the dream corridor sequence near the end and the guitar hero sequence >____

Love the God of War series and 3 was great. Everyone should play it just like everyone should check out Alan Wake or Shadow of the Colossus. Yet....after 4 games in did anyone get a kind of "been there done that" feeling at times. The boss battles are amazing but I got the sense I had playing the original No More Heroes. I just wanted to get to the next boss fight and the rest was filler. In between killing the gods the enemies are nearly all the same from the previous games. It made that combat feel stale. The same foot soldiers, satyrs, centaurs, minotaurs, harpies, cyclopses (cyclopi?), gorgons, etc. The only new enemies that come to mind were the scorpions, stone statue men, and chymeras. A few more to keep things feeling fresh would have really gone a long way. The cestus did help though. Maybe adding some new or special QTE finishes could revive those jaw dropping moments I first experienced playing 1. The narrative could have been just a bit better as I never felt the connection to Pandora much. I'm glad they did clear up the whole thing with Zeus. I might have missed something but I've been scratching my head since 2 trying to figure how he went from aiding Kratos in 1 and the events at the beginning of 2. The first part of the final battle with Zeus was slick. The rest was mediocre. They should have left Gaia in and shortened/stylized the last section a touch. The Poseidon fight with all the horse creatures was drawn out. It had the best finish though. That blurred image of Kratos calmly bearing down on you really conveys just how menacing he is.
