@helloitsme
it needs to be centered with your television. Think about , u are supposed to be interacting with objects on the screen, the movements and gestures would be way off if you placed it to the side if your tv is on the wall just mount it on top of your tv to give a extra foot or so. Good luck with setup. I love mine!

It's hard for me to see where Kinect is in all of these pics, but are those of you with almost enough space, placing Kinect on top of your TVs? That's supposed to add some distance, MS said about a foot (I'm sure it depends on the size of your TV).

I have a city apartment and very little room between my couch and old-school (projection) 54" TV (bought when I was not living in the city). I can barely see the screen standing in that area (bad angle) let alone trying to bring kinect into the mix. Luckily I don't really want one.

The good news is I have plenty of room.

The bad news is that I have to string a USB cable across my living room because I have a projector and all of my equipment is behind the couch.

Now, where's that wireless Kinect transmitter?

After moving my absolutely heavy-as-all-hell large coffee table, we had exactly 8ft from the couch to the TV.

An important note to make, which I did not see mentioned, is this: Make sure you have 4-6ft or so to your right AND left -- this means side room space so that you can move. Don't expect to be able to get good results if you cannot make the space.

One tip, at least for us, is putting the Kinect sensor on top of the TV is a huge help. If at all possible, place it on top of your TV -- for some reason it was more receptive to room lighting, had a wider view angle of our 'play space', and recognized each of us rather quickly.

If you have a TV wall mounted, you can still place Kinect on top of it -- we did and it works perfectly (without the special $40 TV mount). As long as you have about 1.5-2 inches along the top of your TV to lay the rubberized bottom of the Kinect device onto, you're good to go.

All-in-all, the results from Kinect will pretty much come to down to two things and two things only: 'play space' and 'room lighting'. Not enough of either one will spell frustration for the person who just shelled out $150 for a 'Number Five is alive' look-a-like paperweight. However, if you have the space and the lighting, the technology is fun and the games (Adventures, at least) get you moving and working up some heart beats.

I have 12 feet of space when I move the coffee table, since my wife exists on minimalist living and wide open spaces. It's perfect. I also have a rug that frames the play space quite well. I feel like my living room was made for Kinect.

Here's to the Kinect telling you to move CLOSER!

Looking at these pictures, most of you guys have too much crap! As for the heavy coffee table, I recommend furniture sliders.

The real problem is the optimal distance from your TV to your couch. If you set up your living room based on that spec, as I did, you'll barely have enough room for Kinect. Plus, a lot of set up our games in a cozy little nook where the sounds of virtual murder won't disturb the kids.

What a great article! Its so refreshing to see that your editors are real people in real houses and apartments.
I dont have a couch in my room where my 42in is. just my bed on one side. I could use it but do i really want to stand up when i could be laying on my bed playing regular video games. kinect will go the way of the kin if it doesnt make it better.

I'm quite happy that my PS Move literally works from ANY distance. Before I rearranged my gaming area, I had maybe 3 feet from myself to the camera for Sports Champions. I played all the way to Championship Cup with no problem in table tennis.

I now have around 7-8 feet and it still works perfect--just a little more room to move.

I have a half moon couch, and I have to destroy it to get room, let alone move the coffee table but I always move the coffe table for rock band. I wonder if the motivation to completely disassemble your living room will have any weight on wether I feel like playing kinect tonight after a hard days work

Think of it this way:

Homeownership in the US is at 60%. People in their 20's have a much lower rate of homeownership, which those in their 40's have a higher rate.

Joystiq editors are young, and like most young people, cannot afford a house. 90% of their tiny apartments is not kinect-friendly. However, remember, they make up only 40% of America. The other 60% own homes (think of your parents, your friend's parent's houses), and space is simply not an issue. The AVERAGE sq ft in a house in the USA (2009 data) is 2,438sq ft. Not a single joystiq editor has ANYTHING CLOSE TO THAT (from the pictures, looks like 700-1600 sqft apartments).

For the vast majority of the soccer mom's that buy this thing, they will bring it back home into their 2,400sq ft homes and not have any issues at all.

I think the part that makes me happiest about all this is that I bought a house with a very open floor plan, so I have more than enough room to play Kinect without moving any furniture...but I have no plans of buying Kinect. I'm not sure why, but something about the (subtle?) irony of all this just puts a smile on my face.

to bust your argument wide open ashmizen... they've already stated that some of them do own homes and these are actual ROOMS in their homes.

Why can't some people face it that this product has some major design flaws? I mean even if you are right do you think it was wise to design a product with such great limitations?

As I remember correctly Milo and Kate had the girl standing right in front of the kinect...when it become wii Xtreme?

I have a hard time believing the validity of this. None of your coffee tables look anything like coffee. Are you guys just out to hurt Kinect sales?

I have 6 feet 10 inches in front by 6 feet wide..., It depresses me. A one man game, and inaccurate at that. I'm now working on emptying the closet behind me to add another foot when I play inside. No pun intended... (sigh)

I'm confused hasn't this already been a problem with the Wii and Move. Many of the rooms you show wouldn't work with them either. My coffee table has wheels and also has storage for game peripherals because I knew I would want to be able to configure the play space....

I don't know about Move, but it should be similar to Wii. You don't have a problem with coffee tables, and distance is not a really important factor. I can play Wii games at 4 ft. or even less. It's logically not the same, since the Wii sensor only captures the pointing Wiimote, it doesn't use a camera.
Now that I remember, the Move uses a camera, so it may have a problem with distance, but not with obstructing objects.

This makes me remember the time before Wii was released.
I know of many people who were asking themselves about the required space to play, and that they would have to move some stuff. Even I had that question.
Well, I live with my parents, and I chose to put my Wii in my bedroom (you know, a space even smaller than those living rooms). I only had to move my bed a little when playing, and today I don't even do that because now I have a bigger bed and I can't move it, but yes, I can still play without any problems games like WiiSports.
Of course, I play almost everygame sitting in my bed.

But this is another story. I don't own a Xbox360, but I know that if I had one and a Kinect, I would never be able to play Kinect games in my bedroom. I can't make the distance, and there a HUGE bed between me and the TV (a little bigger problem than a coffee table), so I should put the Kinect in the living room. But I would have to move the coffee table and the sofa, which my parents wouldn't accept (and I chose to play in my bedroom because I can play anytime, not the same with the living room).

Basically, I would be screwed if I wanted to play Kinect games. Thanks God I really don't want. But there are many that must be in the same situation, wanting to play Kinect. And there, we have a problem much bigger than a simple coffee table.

But then, Kinect is supposedly for the casual, so my parents would be happy to play with it. However, the Wii should be that way also, but it's not. A videogame is a videogame, after all.

@Soiden People are saying that they play 2 player Wii Sports standing 3 feet from their tv? Really? I have Wii and nobody stands that close. The spaces I've played Move in need to be pretty clear as well. Nobody would swing those things within 3 feet of my tv if they expected to play for very long.

Are people taking this a little out of proportion? My wii will sometimes get interruption from my coffee table due to the shiny surface. It's not hard to slide most coffee tables.
