Star Wars: The Old Republic's PvP 'Warzones' detailed in video
24
Though we're still confused how Star Wars: The Old Republic's non-lightsaber-swinging classes are supposed to best their lightsaber-swinging counterparts in combat, we're looking forward to checking out the objective-based, player vs. player "Warzones" previewed in the trailer posted below.

Ever notice that BioWare sounds like "Buy-our-ware" when you say it fast?
That being said, I can't wait to buy and love this.

From what I've heard, the game is in terrible shape and will be a huge disappointment. I'm hoping it's not true..

I was excited, but that simply didn't look fun.

Animations seem really awkward.

This is the first time I've seen them talk about PvP. Looks like an objective based public quest, Republic vs Empire. It could be good, depending on how important winning these are and how they effect the larger game. Hopefully very important.

@(Unverified) You might want to check out Warhammer Online, it's a much better game now than from launch and completely RvR (Realm vs Realm, ie Order vs Destruction, may as well call Republic vs Imperial RvR too) oriented, it's a lot of fun. Hundreds of players attacking a keep with hundreds inside it trying to repel them... It also has public quests but not PvP ones, I'd say SWTOR took (or hopefully took) inspiration from WAR for the PvP.

@DarknessBear By any chance do you have any inside knowledge?

regarding lightsaber wielding players vs. non-lightsaber wielding folks, i get the impression that the player jedi/sith won't be the super hero luke/obi wan/vader type jedi, they are the rank and file average joe who can fall to blaster fire almost as easily as anyone else if they don't manage to block the shots.

Uh god, Bioware do your self a favor and just release cinematic trailers until the game launches. That just look like total crap.

I didn't like the animations, either, but it's far from release so I expect them to continue with their improvements.
My concern about SW:TOR is that it seems more like something that you would play on a dedicated server than on a MMO server. They really should save money and release a(nother) trilogy of single player games with multiplayer maps. All of us KOTOR fans would still enjoy it, and I'm certain that the quality of the games would be great. It would also save the company (a lot of) money that could be put toward expansions and DLC. This appears to be the general direction that they're taking with it, anyway.
This video looks really cool, but it doesn't in any way say "MMO" to me. I can see that they're aiming for the World of Warcraft battle ground experience, but this video, to me, feels more like Jedi Academy multiplayer than it does WoW BG.
For all of their TALK about how it's not (mostly) a single player experience I have yet to SEE any actual proof of their claim, and this FPS-like multiplayer map hardly supports the idea of a MMO; quite the opposite.
Fun? It certainly does look that way. There's no doubt that I would buy and play this, particularly in a game like Jedi Academy. Monthly subscription fun? No. I have yet to see anything from SW:TOR that warrants a monthly subscription or even a server beyond player hosted MP maps as an added feature to an otherwise great single-player game.

2 words. Persistant World. That's what you get for $15, and it makes allll the difference.
No, I'm not feeling super positive about the game, and this video doesn't do anything to change that sentiment, but I'll gladly pay $15 a month for a true MMO over crap like Guild Wars that is /NOT/ an MMO. It's simply a multiplayer action RPG with a graphical lobby and trade system.

How come this $300 million dollar MMO looks like it's from 2004.

@GeoffSchultz The game is being built to bridge the gap between high performance systems and low performance systems, one of the reasons games like WoW are successful is that your mom's old desktop can handle it, while the beefier machines can extraxt extra graphical goodness from it's textures and particle effects.
The homogenized character models and muted textures are Bioware making a smart business move, sure they could have modeled everything to the level that you see in mass effect 2 (Shep has individually defined stubble hairs o.O) but the only a fraction of the audience that is interested in MMOs and more particularly Star Wars would be able to play it.

Public quests are easily the greatest segment of play in Warhammer Online that should be in every MMO, but this video makes it feel much more like a progressive attack/defend multiplayer map from the likes of TF2 or BFBC2. Something seperated from the world.
One can hope, tho.
