Heavy Rain's deleted scenes exposed, reveal 'supernatural' connection for origami killer
39
You may have missed this behind-the-scenes video of Heavy Rain on the PlayStation Network last week. This very revealing, spoiler-filled video highlights some of the deleted scenes and concepts for Quantic Dream's adventure game.
Did you know that Ethan was originally supposed to have dream sequences during his blackouts? These sequences would highlight his "supernatural" connection to the origami killer, somehow manifested when Jason was killed. We're glad these scenes were removed, just because they're Indigo Prophecy-esque missteps.
The video also explains why Madison Paige is an insomniac, and it's not because of the events of The Taxidermist. Instead, concept art reveals Madison's time as a Iraq War journalist. Apparently, the horror of war is what causes her sleepless nights.
Finally, a deleted scene shows the origami killer getting rid of one last victim. You may recognize her, but we'll let the video show you what was cut.

The dream sequences would have been quite interesting. I think they're right with it being too complex for some people playing, but it is a great representation that I think should have stayed.

I truly wish they could have worked out a method of making those supernatural elements work in the game, because in my honest opinion they seemed REALLY interesting and might have added a 'horror' touch that the game could have used.
It's fine otherwise... Maybe though in a year or so, we'll see a Director's Cut version of the game get released for like 40 bucks and it'll include a retelling of the story with those extra scenes and a new set of alternate endings.

The blackout scenes not being explained because of the dream scenes being taken out was annoying.
They could have removed teh blackout scenes but then how would they explain fat shelby kidnapping Shaun under Ethan;s nose?
Either way I loved the game but stuff like that was annoying.

I love how the end of the video, it has the PS3 ad, and starts off with saying "Family Games".
Yea. Heavy Rain is the epitome of family games.

Maybe it's just me...but I think a couple these things should have stayed. It would have helped explain some of those gaping plot holes around the characters tendencies on certain events.

Am I the only person who didn't get the hype of this game? I tried "playing" it, but instead fired up Scott Pilgrim vs the World after an hour of falling asleep. Chosing whether my son did his homework or watched TV, or ate pizza or chicken just seemed kinda pointless to me.

Well it's a different kind of game. Part adventure, part interactive movie really. Unless you liked the characters, which I did, then I can see why the game would not be interesting.

All of those small actions are there, in my opinion, to attempt to create a connection with the characters. It's not long after that point where the little decisions disappear, and more severe and sometimes horrible ones take their place.

That's funny. I had that same feeling of "Meh" after playing the demo for Scott Pilgrim. Hm. Different strokes, I guess.
But to answer your question, no, I'm sure you're not the only one who couldn't appreciate it. It just depends on what you want out of a game.
Some people look for a story, while others are content to spend hours at a time pointing a reticle at enemies and pulling Rt trigger, over and over, and over, and over...

I'm usually all for story. Heavy RPG hitter, watch a ton of film, and I read a fair amount. Just felt like my actions were inconsequential, and the devs gave little reason to show an interest in whether or not my soon-to-be kidnapped child went to bed on time. Maybe this changes after the game runs in boring mode for a bit, but I really don't think a compelling game should bore you for a few hours before it gets interesting. FFXIII suffered from the same thing.
PS - I'm not sure why it was pointed out that you don't like Scott Pilgrim. It's not like I made that game or have a personal attachment to it. Just happened to be the game I was playing at the time. But 10 points for trying... well, whatever you were trying.

The dream sequences would have made the blackouts make some level of sense.... if they made the psychic connection clear. Right now the blackouts are just obnoxiously unexplained Red Herrings.

The blackouts look amazing, especially the flooded house bit. I wouldn't mind paying (cheaply) for them as DLC.

While taking out those scenes was probably a good idea, the problem is that the story was quite literally full of plot holes. Now I know why. I still would like to play these scenes, and maybe just maybe they'll have some kind of GOTY version with those scenes intact? Not likely though.

I'm kind of torn on this one. The deleted scenes look fun to play and do provide the explanations that were sadly missing from the game. However, I think it was better to have scrapped them as part of the pull of Heavy Rain is that it has that realistic element which would have been destroyed completely. I just wish they would have rewritten the script a bit after removing the scenes as they left massive plot holes.
Posted: Nov 8th 2010 11:55PM mcnerven said
@Jordez Exactly. While I loved the game it is an easy one to nitpick, especially when it comes to the completely unexplained blackout scenes and other plot holes. Even writing in little bits, like say a bookshelf or display case in Madison's apartment that you look which evokes a brief explanation of her past, would've been appreciated.
Still a great and interesting game, but man do these deleted scenes shed a lot of light on questions I had.

I am glad these scenes stayed out. The whole appeal of Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy before it was that they were gritty adventure/mysteries that were grounded in reality. Half the fun is in trying to predict where the story is going to go, who the killer is, etc. And because the player thinks about the story in the context of the real world- going supernatural is both goofy as hell and a cheap betrayal of the player.
The real problem here though, is simply that the devs removed a plot point from the story- and never put anything in its place. I don't know how such an oversight happens, but it really is a shame. Ethan's blackouts are the one big plot-hole in an otherwise satisfying and smart story.

Fair enough, it does have its share of goofs. But for most people that have actually gone through the whole game, the one BIG plot-hole is Ethan's blackouts. I found the experience enjoyable and satisfying- so much so that most of the small writing inconsistencies either didn't bother me, or were explained away pretty easily.
But looking at the comment you posted under your response to mine, it almost seems like you have something against Heavy Rain. Did you play it? Did you beat it? Because I came into this game having heard that there were a ton of plot-holes and that the story made no sense- but I didn't find that to be the case. There is some weirdness and some goofiness- but it's overshadowed by quality characters and a mostly solid story.

Wow, I want to play the underwater dream sequences!!!!
Reason to cut it out: "It makes the story too complex"
...
That's kind of ridiculous. Complex story = bad?
The other cuts make sense though.

Heavy Rain is filled with massive, flagrant plot holes and other inconsistencies. I don't think the people who fawned over that game would have even cared if they threw in some supernatural bullshit to boost.

The dream sequences MIGHT have made the blackouts better. But they also might have just made the red herring even more overblown.
On the other hand. Madison's backstory would have been good to have been at least mentioned, rather than "She's an insomniac, who cares why?"
And watching the Origami Killer off that person was actually quite disturbing.

Madison Paige is awesome, and not just because she is like a straight, American version of Tegan and Sara.
I wouldn't mind some DLC of her flashbacking to Iraq!

I'm glad we were able to see what didn't make it to the game, b/c it explains alot (there was never really any explanation to Ethan's blackouts and this fills in the hole somewhat).
It's too bad we're not getting more DLC for this title. I really enjoyed it, the only problem is that the game leaves you wanting more time to play it.

The blackouts appeared as somewhat forced contrivances designed to create tension - 'Is Ethan the Origami Killer?' - but this dream sequence nonsense would not have been the right solution at all. It would have turned an annoyance into farce.
The blackouts could have been more sufficiently explained by fleshing out Ethan's segment with his psychiatrist more thoroughly. The interpretation that sat best with me is that Ethan's blackouts are merely a consequence of his massive concussion. The origamis he wakes up with are his own - just subconscious expressions of his guilt over his first son's death, expressed through the lens of related contemporary events (he reads about the Origami Killer in the papers).
Hinting at that more openly would have been much better than introducing some even more contrived psychic "link" to Shelby via dream sequence.

@matrices I love everything about this post. Putting in these elements into the psychiatrist scene would've really filled in Ethan's story nicely. If they wanted to keep the suspense and player guessing then the "post-traumatic and concussion syndrome" explanation could've been served up as a suggestion, rather than fact.

I find it interesting that David Cage, the writer/director, made comments after the game came out to explain the annoying Nathan origami scene. He said that a creator/director can get away with one single unexplained moment that adds mystery to the story. When I first read about this I was still annoyed but part of me understood that it was an interesting mystery that would never be solved.
Now we find out that it didn't make sense because it was an element connected to scenes which were cut out to keep the story fairly straightforward (even if they were an interesting story element that I would have liked to see) and it was never some brilliant plot snag the David Cage purposely inserted to add mystique to his game. I don't know about the rest of you but I thinks that's pretty lame.
