THQ details Homefront sequel, novel tie-in and potential miniseries
21
An upcoming novel will follow a tabloid reporter in L.A. during the first moments of the North Korean attack on the US. It's the first salvo in THQ's "transmedia" strategy for Homefront, which is about "building worlds first," then having "different media access that world in interesting ways," Danny Bilson said during his keynote speech at IGDA Leadership Forum 2010. THQ is hoping also to do a miniseries for the game following the contents of the book -- it'd be on SyFy, we imagine -- but even more interesting are Bilson's comments regarding the next game.
"The sequel has new features and doesn't even deal with the same characters," Bilson revealed. "It takes place on the other side of the Mississippi -- nobody knows what's going on over there because the North Koreans have irradiated the Mississippi with radioactive iodine and nobody can cross it without a hazmat suit. It's very interesting stuff."
Bilson says the book will be available for purchase a month before the game launches. HomeFront is currently slated for March 2011.

I think it's always tricky when you try to do a realistic-yet-fictional story. It has to be balanced so that the fictional parts remain somewhat believable, so that we don't have to suspend too much disbelief. The invasion of Washington, DC over a single airport terrorist act in MW2 was too unrealistic. Korea becoming a dominant force in Asia and then invading the continental US? Hmmmm. Maybe if you said China, then I'd bite...
Looking forward to seeing more gameplay from Homefront...

Wait, they've got the sequel planned out a good number of months before release? They must be really confident in it.

Being a writer, if there is anything similar in the process of thinking and creating in these, I am always thinking about things in my stories far ahead. Sometimes, you end up with a lot of story and it's best to separate them.
I don't see anything wrong with planning on the sequel already. If you are enthusiastic about something you are creating you can't help but keep the cogs turning in your head.

Wow, they must have some faith in this series if they're already planning a sequel without the first game out yet. I am really intrigued by this game, especially after the description from a few days back.

Well Iodine is used in the thyroid gland so if you absorb RADIOACTIVE Iodine into your body I'd say you're pretty much screwed.

I REALLY don't like what THQ is doing to Homefront. It has built up little to no hype, revealed little except the premise and is entering the FPS market, one already oversaturated with AAA games and many many more "good but not great" ones, Singularity et al. Despite all of this, THQ is putting all of its gold, diamond and platinum fabrege eggs into the Homefront basket. Granted, it could be good, it could be great, it could be the Half Life 2 of 2011. If it is, THQ has neglected to provide any evidence of it, and even less evidence why I will care about the highly touted multiplayer, books and miniseries.
To clarify, when I first heard of Homefront, I was psyched (despite never having seen Red Dawn, but there's still time for that). However, when someone is overselling you on something you're already sold on, you tend to get a little wary.

I'm sorry, but how could North Korea successfully attack anyone? Is this a science fiction game?

You should download the story trailer if you have PS3 (I don't know if it's on Live). But a quick synopsis, Kim Jong Il dies and his son gains power. He unites Korea, they invade Japan, Japan gets brought into their empire, and I think they take over a bit of China. They then launch a "communications" satellite that fires an EMP over the US. From there, they invade California and set up a base in San Francisco and the game starts around there.

@Grubasaurus Rex thanks for the thinly veiled condescension and implication of superior withheld knowledge.
