Bad sign, good deal: Enslaved for $25 on Amazon
80
For those who haven't bought Enslaved: This morning, you have a great opportunity to get on at the bottom floor of this exciting new IP, thanks to a killer deal on Amazon that'll net you the first game in the series for just $25. Hurry, and make sure you're prepared for the next step in this exciting franchise!
For those who own Enslaved: OK, we're not going to lie to you. This isn't a good sign. We know what we told those other guys, but we have no idea if there's going to be another Enslaved. It certainly doesn't look good, does it? But if we're going to get the sequel we so richly deserve, we'll have to convince others that there's still hope, and that might require us saying some things we're not strictly proud of. If you don't have the stomach for it, we assume you can find the door.

I thought this was a great game and I am not at all disappointed I paid full price for it when it came out. I am looking forward to the DLC and do hope they make a sequel.

Funny thing is, if this were a Wii game, it'd be all about how Core 3rd party games never sell well blahblahblah...
The sad truth is that 3rd party core games is really the only thing that the other systems have going for them, so in turn its the SAME root issue for basically all the opposite reasons.

@Co so not true. I like a good "core third party" game, but I bought my PS3 because of it's huge line of first party exclusives.

@Monkey D Luffy 10 isn't enough? What an exciting life you must lead.
God of War, MGS4, Valkyria Chronicles, Warhawk, Motorstorm, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Gran Turismo, Demon's Souls, Ratchet and Clank, Fat Princess, Super Stardust, Heavy Rain, Infamous, Resistance, MAG, and Modnation Racers...those are more than enough games to keep you occupied for years (unless you're unemployed, or don't have a girlfriend or social life).

Sometimes Amazon makes really random awesome deals. A year ago I saw Batman Arkaham Asylum for only $19.99 at Amazon. It was a flash deal so I don't see it as a bad sign but I understand that games like RDR will never be so cheap so soon so yeah this is bad I guess for the devs.
Posted: Nov 9th 2010 9:51AM mywhitenoise said
@Danzaiver Its because KMart is offering $25 in reward points, plus $25 off select games w/the purchase of COD. Since Enslaved is already $40 there, you get it for $15 with COD.
Still, I'm not interested in either of those games.

Heh, I JUST commented yesterday how I was on the fence about this game but for $25? Yeah, I got an email from Amazon telling me about this and snagged it immediately.
It's not like Ninja Theory makes "franchise" games anyway from what I see. Heavenly Sword never got a follow-up (though understandable from a story perspective). And from what I know of Enslaved it didn't appear that they had a sequel in mind from what I know of how it turns out.
And now they're working on DMC, so Ninja Theory will be alright but Namco might be hurting from this sadly.

yea same happened to me. i saw it in Walmart and thought $60 was too much for a game i knew nothing about really other than a couple reviews. but i woke up this morning and saw the email on my phone, ran to the computer and placed my order. how can i go wrong at $25 for a game that came out a little over a month ago? (plus Joystiq gave it a 4.5/5)

Well... that's interesting. I was on the fence about this one, but at 25 bucks, that does provide some incentive.
I feel bad for Ninja Theory, but they did dig this pit for themselves.

Any recommendations on which console to buy it for? Only thing I hate about owning all of the consoles is trying to figure out which version to buy. :( The sites I do frequent usually only review the one version, though GB once did a review for, I believe, Bayonetta for each system since the PS3 had some issues.

Thanks Vcize. Funny thing is, I just checked my email for my confirmation on the 360 version of Enslaved and saw your post and was a bit worried you might say the PS3 version. :) Now I have this, Sly Cooper collection and Scott Pilgrim bluray coming from Amazon. Merry (early) Christmas to me!

Sorry I regretted buying this game. I can't believe some of the good reviews it got, cinematics aside it was an absolutely boring game to traverse and a kick in the teeth to devs of less hyped games who know about gameplay being more important than hype.
I wanted to love the game (obviously, I paid for it on PS3) and did at first, the first level on the flying thing looked amazing in places. Once landed it all went down hill fast, it was beyond linear, you couldn't do anything other than what the game wanted you to do, most of the choices or puzzling was done by that mouth female companion. It just rubbed me up the wrong way and was glad to to be finished with it and traded it in sharpish.
I really hope if they are serious about a sequel they take a long hard look at the complaints about the first and address them, these are not mere whiny players who want everything perfect these are fun crushers and go against everything that supposedly makes gaming great (proper interaction and sense of empowerment and discovery). This is an extremely dull trek through an slightly above average (for a game) story with far too much hand holding and gameplay design from the 90s.

There was no "hand holding" design in the 90's that crap started in the 00's for sure.
And I still snagged this for $25 as I don't mind linear gameplay as I am accustomed to going through what the developer programmed like side-scrollers and practically any game that isn't a sandbox title really.
What does turn me off is the auto-platforming and what appears to be a very basic battle system. We'll see though, either way I'm sure without even playing it that it's worth $25 to try it out.

It's not an open world game, you're not meant to go off and do all these things while not actually working through the story.

God when will people stop doing this.
Look guy, just because we don't like the one-narrow-path games that basically play themselves (a fate that's befallen almost every franchise I used to love) doesn't mean we want huge random procedurally generated sandbox landscapes instead.
Of course I can kind of understand why some younger people might think this, because games fitting into one of those two extremes are all we're getting these days.
No, what we want is a game with proper -levels- that make you feel like you're in a -place- and not in a non-interactive theme park ride, yet that still have real goals and a real structure, with every little corner having some significance to it.
Not being dropped onto a boring, meaningless randomly generated heightmap with some trees. Not being funneled through a narrow pipe, so that each cutscene can be presented in a neatly timed order (these "game designers" just want to make movies). What we want is Metroid before it became Other M, Resident Evil before it became Gears of War with zombies. Something that makes you actually give a crap about the environment you're in. Because there are almost no games that do this anymore, all for the sake of people who would rather be watching movies. Also, apparently, because a real level structure takes too much time and skill to create.

@bm111
Your definition of "linear" confuses me. You say you don't want games that have a "narrow" path to them but still enjoy games like the older RE games...which are games with extremely narrow paths with horrible camera angles.
I also don't understand how you can lump "younger" gamers into thinking there are two extremes of linear and non linear when older gamers like me probably see it more that way than anyone. Games made in my day were the very definition of linear as all you did in 90% of them was move from left to right, or stayed in one spot to get a high score.
I'm not sure it's the linearity you take issue with for this game, but perhaps it's the gameplay or atmosphere/level design you begrudge? If it is the linearity you're just being hypocritical if you honestly like the old RE games or old side scrolling Metroid games when they are just as if not more-so linear. Unless what you enjoy is getting lost in a game from time to time trying to figure out where to go next? Those two games had that in spades. But I'm not sure if I would agree that makes a game better or worse though.
I like those games too don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't say they have better or worse linearity than any other linear game, lol. I'd say Metroid at least has better level design, but that has nothing to do with defining how "linear" something is I don't believe.

The actual definition of Linear reads as (pertaining to this issue): "Of, relating to, or resembling a line; straight."
To address what bm111 is saying, I think he means that Enslaved (and newer games in general I guess) tend not to present the player with a "choice" when traveling through the level. You're presented with a set, strict platforming path to get from point A to point B, with no real options to deviate from said path to reach the goal. Hence, a straight line.
Now while the original RE and Metroid games still required you to obtain a specific item (key, ball form, etc.) to move past certain checkpoints, the player was free to explore a vast number of other locations and directions as well. In this exploration, there would often be a different reward altogether (like ammo, or missle upgrades). In that sense, the player is presented with multiple, non-linear paths to choose from.

I hope games like Enslaved dont shrivel up and die in light of blockbuster games. It all depends when people will get tired of CoD.
It is some dark times for alot of publishers, but Im sure their's plenty light at the end of the tunnel.

Also, on the game itself, I really want to play it, but the marketing in the UK was pretty rubbish, and the box art and, I think, the title of the game really hurt its take up rate here. I heard the name before I saw anything of the game and I thought it'd be some Japanese RPG or something.

So I guess this means that PlayStation 3 wasn't the reason Heavenly Sword had the exact same reception. I honestly think Enslaved would have done much, much better if it was exclusive to PlayStation 3, or failing that, Xbox 360. No doubt Sony or Microsoft would have come up with the money for marketing that this game clearly just didn't get. I only recall seeing one advert for Enslaved in the UK and that was on some obscure website. I'm sure there were TV adverts, though I didn't see them.
Hopefully this'll make Ninja Theory rethink the way they do things. As silly as it may sound, making a good game just isn't enough to secure it as a success. At the moment however I'm just wonder if their future is going to get any better. They're in the process of making the new DmC title which isn't exactly being all too well received by the franchise's devoted fan base thanks to the "new and improved" Dante. If there's anything Ninja Theory should have learnt from 2010 it's that gamers don't like change. Infamous 2's Cole MacGrath being the case in point here.
