I dunno Crysis is basically a glorified tech demo. The original and Warhead were kind of meh.

@darkandlong Yeah, just like Uncharted 2 is a tech demo for the PS3, right? Please.

@RKN

Not sure how there is a comparison to Uncharted 2 in my comment but hey, run with it.

Crysis has one of the lamest plot(s) ever. There's nothing all that immersive to it aside from the pretty graphics. The gameplay is loose and detached. Character development on even a remedial level is nonexistant. sonfoman pretty much nailed it when he said cookie cutter. Pretty engine, pretty substandard in every other aspect.

Actually considering the quality of most games plots, I would say that Crysis's fiction was average at the least, certainly not as bad as many made it out to be. It was farely barebones yes, but it served its purpose to carry the action through and it never tried or failed to be anything more then a schlocky action fest.

The gameplay itself is where you're really just wrong, the game allowed you to play as you wanted through use of the power suits different modes and pretty sandboxy environments. I personally played the game in deltamode as pretty much a Predator, quickly popping in and out of stealth and constantly on the move between the different areas of dense foliage, using various means to distract the enemy away from my actual position. But I could have also gone for a more standard FPS approach which is what I assume a lot of people did to come away from it with the impression that's all it was.

Plus what other shooters allow you you to kill/destroy buildings/trees/people and then kill more of those things by throwing the remains of the aforementioned at them. That was always fun.

So there'll be a computer with a single GPU that can run the original Crysis on max settings (16x AA) at 2560x1440 by around the time Crysis 4 comes out, then?

So now you can know how top of the line your computer is. Every year if you can't run the new Crysis, your setup sucks.

@The Aquacharger Since Crysis 2 and I'm sure other future titles will be on console, I think these jokes will stop.

I am wondering if Crysis 2 will be dumbed down since its on the 360 and PS3, I'm sure even technically backwards compared to Crysis 1, I hope Crysis 2 is not a console port to the PC, but instead plays on all of its strengths. I don't want to play a game based on 5 year old hardware on an i7 and 480s in SLI....

Just because it's on consoles doesn't mean they can't power up the PC versions, which more then likely will happen as the point of Crysis is to show off the new Cryengines. Which on the PC are some of the best out there.

@The Aquacharger I hope your right, but I highly doubt it. I have a feeling that it will be just a console port I can play at higher resolution and anti-aliasing but that's it, no other effects that make it look like its a PC exclusive and not a console port.

I wonder how different Metro 2033 is on a maxed out PC vs. the 360. It sure looks pretty on my PC and since its also on the 360, maybe there is hope for Crysis 2.

I'm already afraid of the city setting vs island setting, probably lower drawing distance for the consoles to handle. : (

@RKN Actually, they build the game for all platforms simultaneously and can test anything anywhere in a level instantly. It's like a vastly more complex and powerful version of the Unity engine, except it's made by Crytek. The engine probably uses code arguments etc to work out if something is suitable for the console build or not, before they even instantly test it (& they'd have a very good idea themselves without these helpful tools). The PC version will use DX11 code to have more advanced graphics, whereas the console version will be just using DX8 or whatever. It looks very impressive on the console version alone, better than most games so despite the huge difference between console and PC it will still look amazing.

I get sick of games after the third installment, unless it's an RPG with different characters. Like I love the Uncharted series, but I hope Naughty Dog takes a break after the third game and makes a new IP for the PS4...

How about better optimization? When people are dropping $500 on a video card, and using one of the highest CPU's on the market, and they say "I get 50 FPS in Crysis with everything on full!", you know your optimizations suck.

@Drakkenfyre If its a console port and not based on the PCs strengths like Crysis 1 and Warhead, then that problem will happen.

@Drakkenfyre

Well, for one I see no problem with 50fps.

Secondly, what other games do you have to compare to what Crysis is doing technically to judge that it's badly optimised rather then there being a reason it's more demanding than other games?

When Warhead was released I never understood people saying it was better optimised than Crysis when for me it both ran and looked worse.

@Drakkenfyre Yeah but unlike most poorly optimized games that look horrible and run horribly, the performance on Crysis is actually linked with how awesome the game looks. Your loss in performance is justified by a noticeable gain in visual fidelity. Issues in optimization are only a really big issue if the game looks and performs horribly.

Can't play on high? Chances are it'll play very well on medium or low. Crysis wasn't very optimized at its high-end (everything maxed), but even an old old single-core proc and x1950 can run it fairly smoothly on medium/high settings. Most of the "unplayable" rumors started because people couldn't max out the game their hardware.

Crysis is actually a very scalable game and it will actually run on a pretty diverse range of setups, its just that at the time of its release, it was nigh-on impossible to run it maxed out.

Why do I have a feeling that only Crysis 1 and Warhead will be the only good titles in this "long-running" series? I'm already very cautiously optimistic about Crysis 2, especially being multiplatform and perhaps being dumbed down not only technically but gameplay wise.

Crysis 2 will be my testbed for any interest in future Cryses. I'm extremely skeptical of any engine primarily designed to run on consoles being able to run on a PC at anywhere near optimal.

There's also the move to an urban environment. I can't deny wanting to see a city in a Crytek game, and it has potential, but when compared to the jungle environments it probably just can't be as free form.

@Kibayasu Agreed, exactly what I am worried about. I fear that Crysis 2 being on consoles and perhaps being designed for consoles will limit the power of what the PC can do. It would be sad if the levels in Crysis 2 are small and constrained to fit the limitations of the consoles and then people will be able to make much larger and better levels with the CryEngine 3 sandbox level designer. : (

Crytek needs to forget Crysis and work on a new Timesplitters, since they bought Free Radical they put Timespliters on hold. Timesplitters is by far the best FPS ever.

Whenever higher-ups talk about their franchise like this, they seem like such tools. This reminds me of Zelnick's quote about Bioshock, and its 5-6 sequels. Makes me feel gross.

"It's the start of a new future for Crysis. We're taking it very seriously"

Release a non-commercial Cryengine 3 SDK, and you've got a deal Mr. PR Spokesperson. The thought of a community remake of the original with Cryengine 3's updated technology (specifically, the deferred lighting model so we can actually play something as impressive as the GDC 06 demo) makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

@jackal I could be wrong, but I think that Crytek is planning on releasing a free non-commercial version of CE3 (the whole sdk, not just the sandbox editor). I know it's free for educators/students already.
