Video: Ignition's canceled sci-fi FPS, Reich
44
It's been a rough quarter for Ignition. Earlier this month, the company was forced to shut down its Flordia branch and had to cancel a game it had in development for five years, WarDevil. Today, that pain is increased five-fold, as some footage of Reich, a first-person shooter in development at the Florida offices and, naturally, a casualty of the recent layoffs, has emerged over at GameVideos. Based on the five different videos we've embedded past the break, we're pretty bummed out. Reich looks like a neat sci-fi shooter with quality physics. What say you all?

Those dudes bear an uncanny resemblance to the Judges of Judge Dredd.

Its like the game was made for the 90's, but with late 00's technology.
The attitude, the gameplay design (noclip flying, physics), and the quasi-nazi thing with occult/science. It all seems so... not contemporary.
The voice acting is probably just a placeholder, but the motion blur was pretty bad. Worse than HL2's.

@Darkpen physics of this level weren't being done in the 90's... If I recall, Quake 2 was 96, Goldeneye was 97, and Half-Life was 98... (that's without wikipedia-ing, forgive me if I'm off at all)... so what are you talking about dude? The coolest thing we had by the end of the 90's as far as physics in games is concerned was ragdoll.

Wow. That looked like a combination of Halo, Bioshock, Singularity, and The Force Unleashed. That would've been fantastic.

looks like it could have been interesting. I never understood how projects like this, after so much time and money has been invested in them, just get canceled. is there no possibility of selling off what they already have finished to another developer to pick up and finish? what about just giving it away so someone else can finish it? it makes no sense that it would just get completely thrown aside...

If I learned anything from Econ, it's that companies use the following (via Wikipedia):
In traditional microeconomic theory, only prospective (future) costs are relevant to an investment decision
It's sad that game companies run like that though.

Looks like another pillage-every-FPS-in-the-book-for-game-mechanics attempt, like Singularity.
Well, that's what it looks like from the still frames anyway -- I didn't have two and a half minutes to watch the same thirty second commercial five times just to check out a few minutes of game play footage from a canceled generic FPS...
Anyway, I'm glad less prominent developers are finally understanding the polish necessary to compete with AAA FPS titles - spending five years in development, no less. Now, if they could just get a handle on the creativity that needs to go into a Halo, BioShock, L4D or other "blockbuster" FPS releases with "blockbuster" budges that sell millions of copies in a month.

Master Chief has Covenant guns and a jet pack. Gordon Freeman has the crowbar. But this guy has glowing hands that let him fly and crush columns and use them as weapons.
Color me impressed.

@TXYeti By the way the: second, third, fourth and fifth videos are all complete gameplay, in fact it includes about 9 minutes of the most non-generic shooter I've seen in a while.

If you watch all the videos, it looks amazing. Amazing destruction along with some awesome graphics. Only thing I saw that I didn't like was too much motion blur.

the second video has some of the worst voice acting i have ever heard/seen

Just a guess, but I'm pretty sure the voices were just filler. Professional voice actors would have redone those scenes had the game ever gotten to the final stages of development. I'm guessing those voices were in there so the animators could work on lip-syncing and the other details of that scene. But yeah...those were pretty bad indeed.
This game looks like it could have been interesting. It's too bad we'll never really know how it would have turned out.

Remember Arc Rise Fantasia?

...Or, based on the last video, maybe it was Earth all along? Charlton Heston would be proud.
Regardless, I'm wishing it hadn't died, so I could try it out - though to be fair, get a similar vibe from it that I did from TimeShift. Super-cool mechanic, executed with style? Check. Overal execution and design? Ehh...
Though again, to be fair, this is a title that never made it out of production. We have to judge based on the unfinished product, which might've ended up as something awesome.

This would have been much more interesting to see rather than another COD/Fallout but because it won't sell 5 million don't take the risk? This industry is now fuelled by recycled games essentially, a shame.

Ya know, it looks interesting, but I think too much destruction actually doesn't work well when it comes to gameplay. Impressive stuff though for sure

Hey Gearbox, get on this!
I've never seen a game before where literally every part of the environment is destructible. The music was pretty damn good, too, except for the end of the last video. It's obvious these were all from different points in development, but I thought it was weird how the game's logo got lamer and lamer.
Also, did you guys know Tracy Morgan is doing an HBO special? It's apparently going to be "sexy as hell."

Something tells me that this game was going to run at a consistent 3 frames per second with all that column destruction.

Wow, this is amazing! It's such a shame that dozens of shovel-ware games are released each year, but something this impressive gets canceled =(.

This 'using the force' thing is getting kind of old :/ Nearly every shoot em up turns to telekenisis of some kind, slowing down time, controlling minds, lavitating things etc etc now when plain old shooting just isn't exciting enough :/

Yes, but this is one of the first times I've seen "this using the force thing" done pretty well. By the look of the videos, the control given to the player over the environment chunks seems pretty tight. Other games have used telekinesis to lift something, move it in a clunky way and throw it in the wrong direction half the time. Here, it looks like something actually worth getting excited about.
Shame to see it go. If I had a couple million dollars to spare, I'd lend it to this in a heartbeat.

Art assets seemed to transition from balls to damn sexy, but VO sounded somewhat amateur. Story might've had some good bits, too, with the dialogue as it was. Overall I have to agree that it should have been given a shot (and still should).
I think this further proves that game companies are in need of legal rights to open-source/buyback tech and art (for a charitable price) upon dissolution. a
Also, I think these leaks should be sanctioned (by Ignition), because some of the employees in question may not have had previous experience and they are deserving of skipping the "having shipped a AAA game" bullet point required for so many dev jobs (and even receiving some offers because of Joystiq's generous coverage).
