About a month ago, Microsoft's UK director of Xbox and Entertainment, Stephen McGill, said he expected Halo: Reach to outsell Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops. We had a nice laugh about it in the company of some analysts. Later, in an interview with Eurogamer, McGill waffled like an Eggo and wasn't willing to put money down on the claim.
Asked if he would bet a "tenner" that Halo would outsell Call of Duty: Black Ops, the executive said Activision's shooter would jump ahead because it's multiplatorm (logical!), whereas Reach is only available on the Xbox 360. When the bet was adjusted to be only for the Xbox 360, McGill stated, "I'm tightfisted with my cash, so I'm not going to bet anyone any money about anything."
We have an exercise routine after the break that won't cost a dime.
I definitely wouldn't bet on Halo:Reach outselling Black Ops on the 360, or vice versa. Both franchises are HUGE, to place a bet it would be more like a coin toss.
Not really a fan of either franchises, but I would easily drop a grand or two on COD selling more than Halo on the 360. That game is outrageously popular.
@Shigster Agree. VGchartz says Black Ops pre-orders started at record-setting pace, but ultimately ended up about where MW2's were. I doubt Black Ops outsells MW2 on 360 (nearly 12 million), and I think Reach is outpacing Halo 3 so far, so it will probably get up around 11-12 million lifetime. It'll be pretty close...on the 360. I don't think I'd place any bets.
Boo, he changed the bet at the last second. Way to stick your guns there, boyo.
OT: I think Black Ops has a good chance of outselling Reach. Most the people who bought Reach are in Black Ops' target audience, and it's not like they're been implanted with brand recognition to NOT buy non-MS games.
Geez, you'd figure they paid this guy enough to put up a ten-spot, even if it's just lip service for his company. He could even have his accountant write it off, be reimbursed by MS or both if he's shady.
@Zepinephrine They wouldn't want him to put up the ten spot in the event that he might lose. Then we would have the future story--MS executive loses ten dollars in bet that Reach would outsell Black Ops. I'm not a journalist--someone make that snappy!
Black Ops will outsell Reach here easily with or without being on PS3, the fact it's on PS3 just adds more money to their pocket. It's a win / win.
The claim in the first place was stupid, Mr Xbox should already know that the only things as important as CoD games are breathing and eating for many people.
Every male has and will neglect thier girlfriends because of this game, sex is irrelevant, go away with your sexy lingerie, you won't sway anyone :D
"I'm tightfisted with my cash, so I'm not going to bet anyone any money about anything."
He kinda sounded like a dick when he said he wasn't going to take that bet lol but I don't really blame him though. I don't like to make bets either, but he probably could've said that in a better way.
Not to brown nose, but Joystiq is the reason I visit the Internets every day. This video = me laughing out loud on the floor while rolling. Kudos folks.
Okay people, seeing as we started it, lets hear those "CoD Vs. Your Girlfriend" stories.
I can quite easily say mine isn't so bad as much as it is good, my gf happens to like CoD :( Yes, I know, that's even worse, why? Because it means in the event I get pulled away from CoD for some reason or another, she practices hardcore, challenges me, and beats me, this should never be allowed to happen male counterparts!
Just to put some numbers if anyone else keep asking themselves: - CoD: Blacks Ops sales: over 7 mill all. 59% for Xbox 360, that's around 4.13mill. - Halo: Reach sales: around 4.25 mill. Both numbers represent day one sales.
Yeah.... You also have to take into consideration that Halo: Reach was an Xbox 360 Exclusive! and Call of Duty: Black Ops is 'Reaching' out to PlayStation 3, Wii and DS gamers as well. Of course Call of Duty will outsell Halo.
Hmm, I'd put my money on COD. I would have said Reach before, but the buzz over this Treyarch-made COD is actually surprisingly bigger than I thought it would be considering what happened with IW. Being that bungie's forum is full of Reach hate (not that internet forum goers represent the gaming public and large but still) and how big MW2 was last year, I'm going to say COD.
@swede33 It really isn't sadly. I wasn't even going to get it but I was convinced by friends and my little bro. The multiplayer is atrocious and very aggravating. If you don't camp or spray and pray with a SMG you will get nowhere in the game. Me and my friends spend more time yelling at the screen then anything else. The thing we do most tho is go in theater and record all the BS that happens and laugh about it.
While I personally think that Black Ops will outsell Reach, entirely and just on the 360, I do have one glaring thought about the subject:
Nearly EVERYONE who is going to get Black Ops will have it within a week or two. (FFS: My stepdaughters boyfriend who has no job or money managed to get it at launch and she didn't buy it for him. DIAF!) Reach will likely have more legs as it does not have the same bang out of the gate that Black Ops has so in the end it "may" do better.
Time will tell.
