Miyamoto talks about Wii Music's future, hints at sequel
39
Last October, when the wounds of Wii Music's critical and commercial failure were still relatively fresh, Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned that "there may still be some possibility" of continuing the franchise. In a recent interview with Techland, Miyamoto went a bit further, explaining, "There's a lot of potential still in Wii Music, I think. Because we're going to change it up, a new interface is coming, and all of that." Them's sequeling words, partner.
Miyamoto also addressed the possibility of Mario making an appearance in a Wii Music follow-up, stating "If we get more people to understand what's going on in the game concept, then he might appear in the game. I don't know." He added that a Mario cameo is somewhat unlikely, as "he can't play guitar" or saxophone using his stubby, gloved fingers. That's a good point, Mr. Miyamoto -- we guess he can't play too many instruments. But he can rap with the best of them.

Well, that and give us a proper sequel to STARFOX64.
Miyamoto, stop all this WiiMUSIC insanity and just get crackin' on what's worked in the past: Putting dot eyes on inanimate objects and calling it a character, strange adventures in lands most people need pot/LSD to view, and/or making high profits without swindling people into buying a product just because there's a packaged-in WiiRemote controller.
WiiMUSIC is none of the above. >:\

I played this for about an hour at a friends house once. I didn't really get anything out of it, seemed like just a lot of waggling to make random noises, was there even any game play like the majority of music games or is it supposed to be like a simulation?

Wow. This comment board is whiner central. You guys do realize Wii Music was never meant to be Guitar Hero or anything like it, right?
In any case, the game wasn't exactly a commercial failure. It sold almost 3 million units.

Listening to a kid at a Wii kiosk "playing" this game was the first time I've ever been tempted to use the nunchuk connection cable for strangulation.
As someone who has played multiple instruments and actually participated in real musical events I think Wii music offers nothing to the table in regards to music. It doesn't teach or give enough room for actual musical creativity. It was a failed and pointless concept experiment and Miyamoto needs to admit that fact.
If, in the sequel, they actually make something worthwhile with what they've learned from the mistakes of Wii Music then I might revisit that franchise. But there is nothing truly worthwhile to defend in Wii Music. It was just a flop.

@ArQuesta Agreed. At the very least Guitar Hero and Rock Band (now especially with the 102 button guitar) will teach you intricate rhythm and syncopation, drum beats and keyboard. Wii Music was an abomination of coding. Obviously Miyamoto is just testing the limits of his power and influence at Nintendo. I could see if this game came out in the mid-90s...maybe. If it did sell 3 million copies, obviously that is finally proof that there is a Satan and Nintendo has a deal with him.

I think you're being optimistic if you think Guitar Hero, etc, will 'teach you rhythm' any more than Wii Music.
Just like DDR before them, or even just like Ouendan for that matter, these games don't really teach you anything - okay, perhaps some exceptions in the crazy advanced modes in the latest Rock Band that nobody bought, but even then I'm a bit doubtful.
I can play DDR quite well, still do, and it has 'triplets' say - that's a rhythm concept, and yes I get to know what it feels like [at least when used in cheesy dance music] but is that really something I couldn't have learnt in one half-hour lesson with any music teacher, rather than in many hundreds of hours of DDR?
In terms of music the point of these games is:
a) interacting with music is fun, even if it's just pressing a button at the right point.
b) [for the dance games] you get some exercise
c) [for the instrument games] you might get inspired to learn a musical instrument
I'm sure (a) and (c) could apply to Wii Music just as much as to Guitar Hero, though it might be more relevant to a different audience. I didn't play the original, but it sounded like it might be quite compelling for small children. Pretty good age to get people interested in playing a musical instrument, really. If the game's limited then that's actually a good thing, because if little Timmy wants to play different tunes, he has to get a real recorder and get lessons...
That said I kind of wonder if the first one sold three million based largely on the name - i.e. was the reaction of the 3 million people who bought it, pretty much as a bad on average as the reaction from hardcore gamers? Or did those 3 million, maybe families with young children, have fun with the game and look forward to getting the next? If the former, the next one might sell even worse.

NO, IT COULD be great game
Just add all the "SOUNDTRACKS" from NINTENDO franchises.
(such as, ... like all of them)
Hardcore Ninties (including myself) will definitely buy that
Please do it for us. :)

If there was ever a game that helped cement my complete loss of all faith in Nintendo not going to crap it was this game. A full priced game that's not even as good as a side option in a Guitar Hero game.

Am I the only one in all Earth that liked WiiMusic? OK, it may be not a competitive game, maybe it's not a game at all, but I think it's a nice idea that needs to be polished.
And for kids, I think it's an amazing tool for education and for developing some motricity.

It's not even a sell-out move. Wii Music is the rare title that not only hardcore gamers hate, but CASUAL customers also hated. There's no point to a sequel.
Any amount of R&D given to this game is R&D that could be better spent towards something better, like an HD remake of the CDi Zelda games.
