As both properties are wholly owned by Nintendo, the mod is offered for free and the creator doesn't pack the NSMB ROM with the download. Additionally, repeated warnings are given to would-be thieves, such as "Please remember, don't download this if you don't have the original game from Nintendo! You have been warned!!" As of right now, the patch isn't available, but is said to be coming at some point tomorrow, just in time to make your weekend way, way more awesome.
Super Mario Bros. 3 fan remake is finished, mental

If you're anything like us, you've got a serious affinity for the third Super Mario Bros. NES game. However, there's no way you have the same amount of love that GBATemp.net forum user SKJmin does for the decades old game. SKJmin tirelessly remade Super Mario Bros. 3 in the New Super Mario Bros. (DS) engine. Just yesterday, the final, totally bonkers trailer for the patch went up, which we've dropped after the break.

As cool as this is, its not the same as SMB3 without the Racoon Feather/Tanuki

@Killimus2188 Ah how quick we forget in 10 years... As much as this sounds any more logical, his powerup for the Racoon tail was the leaf, not the feather. I loved the Tanooki suit as well. That was probably my favorite powerup in SMB3 as a kid.

Completely agree. As one of my favorite mario games, I was excited for this but I just can't get past the no tanuki thing. Nintendo makes up new suits in every installment but sometimes I wish they'd bring back some of the older ones. Tanuki Mario is in my top five favorite power ups ever.

Yes. Lacking of the SMB3 powerups makes this no SMB3 to me.

Impressive. It looks like he used the artwork from New Super Mario Bros. for the DS, and recreated the levels.

I wish Nintendo would have done this for Mario's 25th Anniversary. Remake the four NES games with the NSMB engine. Rather than waste a lot of disc space and charge $30 for an SNES game that should be on VC for $8.

@Duke There's no doubt that it's impressive...but calling it a remake of Super Mario Bros. 3 is extremely misleading. From what I could tell in the trailer, it doesn't feature Mario 3's powerups, world map, inventory system, or anything like that. It's simply a level pack that happens to feature some maps from Super Mario Bros. 3. But 90% of what was shown in that trailer had absolutely nothing to do with SMB3. I think that's why people are upset...they feel misled.

I can't see why you're complaining about it here, since this had the regular fight music in it, not the boss battle theme :P

Sweet! But I'll have to say if you want to play it, you'd best nab this now cause I'm sure Nintendo is waiting in the wings to kill it.

I'll have to agree with the naysayers, at least a little bit. No raccoon leaf, tanuki suit, frog suit or hammer suit? Just doesn't seem like smb3 anymore.
Though, seeing how the new custom graphics stand out so badly against the ones that came from from nsmb, I guess having to model and animate those character graphics would've turned out a disaster. I also don't see any kind of smb3 mechanics, merely ones that came straight from nsmb. I guess this is a tile hack, with no real reprogramming involved.
I'll have to commend him for the effort, and hell he's not getting paid for it so good job anyway, but maybe he should've gotten some help with certain elements.

I totally wasn't expecting "Venice Rooftops" from Assassin's Creed 2 to start playing near the end. Love that song!

This guy/girl could have put all that time and effort into making their own completely original game that they would legally have the right to sell...
But no, s/he is just too darn hardcore for their own good and want to pay a homage to one of their favourite franchises.

@Chazzr He didn't have much to work with and stuff like that is hard cut him some slack. If you hate it and call him such a failure you go make an awesome Mario 3 hack/mod

@RobT Truer words were never spoken. I thought that trailer was fantastic. Nintendo is getting lazy. Nevermind Wii Music 2, just give the gamers something they would actually play, afterall we ALL bought the Wii and most of us NEVER play the damn thing. I can't even remember how to turn it on.

This is the problem with doing a Romhack as opposed to creating your own engine... you're limited to what the original game's engine can do.
In the case on New Super Mario Bros., it means that the SMB3 part of the game is missing all the SMB3 powerups... which is a shame, as the raccoon powerup was necessary to get to a lot of the game's hidden areas.
It also means no items on the map screen, which also means no hammer to break blocks on the map.

I agree that the Tanuki Mario is the best power up ever. But stop bashing at the efforts of this hack, I think this is a great homage to Mario (better than that 25th anniversary game nintendo is pulling) and looks really fun to play with all those extras.
As I have the original DS one and a flashcart I'll be playing this.
Thanks for makin it.
