Memo from Activision:

Dear recently separated employee. We would like to thank you for all of your hard work and wish you a happy holiday season! And to let you know that we are in the giving spirit we have given your job to someone in another country or state where they have less restrictive overtime and benefit laws. We value you efforts, but not enough to pay you accordingly. Good luck finding work this time of year!

Sincerely,
Bobby

PS: No you will not be getting a copy of the title you worked on, even though we promised you one. We only do that for employees. Toodles!

I've worked on a game with the guys from Budcat, they're really nice and talented people with good ideas, but this is what it is.

@The Wicker Man

Yep, that's the first thing that pops into my head whenever I read another post and its resulting comments about Activision's latest predations on the games industry.

People who complain about Activision and yet continue to buy their games are filthy hypocrites.

We all have the power to stop this, but nobody will. We have to have that latest Call of Duty game or sparkly horse. Who cares who else got screwed over, long as it wasn't me directly.

Imagine if one day every single consumer decided to just not buy another Activision product till they stopped being dicks? Imagine the effect that could have. Sad that we're too pathetic to make it happen.

Activisions killing spree is horrendous today. Well I guess we can wait until next Christmas to see what they do with the new Modern Warfare team. They're killing anything with a morsel of talent these days.

Guitar Hero actually had a QA team!? Did no one there bother to tell them to stop making the same damn game twice (or more) a year?

@Lerkero

QA teams don't get to make that call. The people that lay off QA teams do.

Fast-forward to 2011, when Activision announces an increase in Q4 profits thanks to CoD and WoW. These people truly have no shame.

Don't forget Guitar Hero.

Hey developers trying to work with Activision, can't make anything that will make as much money as Call of Duty or Guitar Hero and keep it up every year? No? Then go somewhere else.

Speaking as someone who was downsized after their company announced billions in profit (literally) I can tell you that Activision's promises of "working to redirect those employees..." really means that laid off workers get to browse job openings before they become public, often without any sort of relocation assistance. Also I think the "outplacement counseling services" are something that they are legally required to do, just to assure that no disgruntled worker comes back to sabotage business or hurt anyone.
If I may say so on behalf of Budcat and Bizarre, F*ck you, Activision.

"Aside from Guitar Hero, the studio also worked on the Psychonauts PS2 port, as well as Medal of Honor: Vanguard for Wii."

So they shut down a developer that hasn't released anything since 2007, excluding the dying Guitar Hero brand. Sure, it sucks people lost their jobs, but if all they're making are games with decaying sales, why wouldn't they cut them? You don't make money by keeping extraneousness employees on deck "just in case."

Would it be too much to ask to not cut their jobs weeks before the holidays? It gives the impression that they enjoy looking like callous assholes.

And just because of the holidays someone should be entitled to 2.5 months pay and benefits for doing nothing?

Layoffs suck and all but they usually happen for a good reason. Every business is going to trim the fat and run as lean as possible at year end btw. If these people did their job they would still have one.

Don't be so short-sighted. You think this has anything to do with job performance? I've talked to people that have been through these lay-offs. Their firings have nothing to do with job performance.

They have everything to do with outsourcing. Cheap labor means bigger profits to people like Bobby Kotick.

I'm seeing an exact replica of EA back in 80s and 90s.
Activision will eventually follow the same path and lose its best creative minds and crash and burn.
Meanwhile, Kotick will have bailed with his golden parachute for some other company after have ruined everything for short-term profit.

You know how in China they execute CEOs that screw over their companies and the public? Maybe we should default on all our loans from them and let them take over after all.

I won't rest until Bobby Kotick is guillotined.

I see they're going the way that Obsidian and Lionheart have already gone: ie, why have QA at all? Why not let the paying customers do your beta testing for you?

Seriously, I don't know what it is, but New Vegas is even more glitchy and unfinished than Fallout 3 was, and Fable 3 is MUCH more glitchy and unfinished than Fable 2 was. Disturbing trend, definitely.
