XI is pretty good.

But I'm quite partial to VIII :).

DQXI, eh?

So what system does that game end up being on PS3, 3DS, or the PSP2? Also, is DQX really coming out on the Wii still?

@Alexisonfire - DQX is still coming out on the Wii. I'd expect it to probably be one of the very last major games for the platform.

...provided it doesn't go all Twilight Princess and end up as one of the launch games for Nintendo's next platform. (Lord knows it would move a few units.)

Aye, 8 is far and away worlds better than 9 to me.
It doesn't rely on some tachy, useless gimmick (tag mode)
The alchemy pot is always with you.
Looks better overall.

And giving us a title system, where we can't get all the titles, seems rather... dickish.

IX was only ok. 8 and 5 are my absolute favorites, both superior games, IMO. Can't wait for 6 to get here!

I was under the impression that 6 hasn't even been fan translated...

@Alexisonfire It was translated by fans, but never released here officially. I've never played 6, but I can't wait for it to come stateside. It got a remake like 4 and 5 did for the DS and was released in Japan. A release date hasn't been announced but it's expected to come here.

Don't forget the amazing DQ3. And of course VIII, let alone V, are vastly superior to IX.

How important is the multiplayer im DQ9? I want to get it but none of my friends are into RPGs like this. I don't want to get it and find out it sucks if you don't play with friends.

One of these days I'll play a Dragon Warrior game. Well, actually, probably not, what with all the other stuff I have on my plate, with no end in sight... But it's still nice to dream about unlimited time, isn't it?

Give them time. Like all series like this, the most recent title is usually skewed higher than what it ends up being down the road.

I know I do that all the time.

I couldn't get into DQIX personally. I really wanted to like it but I was so bored with it after ~4-5 hours I couldn't keep playing.

And I'd have to say VIII is my favorite out of the DQ games I've played.

The truth is, compared to other games in the series, DQIX is a very poor game. How can Level 5 understand DQ so well in VIII and misunderstand it so in IX is beyond me. I mean, if I wanted to play a crappy Monster Hunter ripoff, I'd play the PSP Phantasy Star or something. Easy, short and uninspired, IX couldn't even at least run at a constand goddamn framerate. Ugh.

It didn't run at a constant frame rate? Impossible, since the DS can't have frame rate issues: it just starts dropping polys instead.

I wonder about that, but I am 100% sure that it ran with frequent slowdowns. Perhaps it wasn't slowing down per se, just sometimes running at a very low framerate in general. I have no clue if what you're saying is correct, but if it is, then game must switch to 15 fps in towns like Stornway. Here I boot it up on my DSLite and there it goes. Never seen it in a DS game before or after, true, but here I see it with my own eyes.

I haven't completed IX yet, but so far I like it. My favorite so far is IV, but I still have to play V and VI.

I LOVE DRAGON QUEST IX. Holy crap, if Super Mario Galaxy 2 hadn't come out this year it would have easily been my favourite game of the year, if not my favourite JRPG since... Chrono Trigger?

The game just has such an interesting and involving approach to narrative perspective, as well as a format that is so well suited to the platform. Tons and tons of replayability (or just playability... I'm like forty hours in and not even close to being done, but I'm still not bored with it or frustrated or anything). And even though this is a hallmark of the DQ series, I love the witty/punny dialog so much.

I'm wishing I'd called in sick to work today because now I feel like playing DQIX...

I liked 8 alot better because its focus was on telling a good story. I really did not like that my party was made of 3 random people I created that had no relevance to the plot.

totally agree with that.

VIII on the PS2 was my favorite too.

hopefully with X they can figure out how to make it on a console with HD graphics, multiplayer co-op, and a real story with persistent characters and voices.

This is highly ironic considering how much Japanese gamers bitched and moaned when it was announced that DQ9 would be *gasp* SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT from previous Dragon Quests.

DQ IX was good, borderline great, but just not quite up there with the other greats in the series.

I'll take III, IV, V, VI, and VIII over it, and VII was probably about as good.

Good to know that the only DQ game I've played all the way to the end, DQ1 (actually DW1, with the enhancements), is no one's favorite. It was such a chore.
