Famitsu recently had a chance to chat with Tetsuya Nomura, the zipper-loving director of the Kingdom Hearts franchise. In the interview (translated by Andriasang), Nomura revealed that new "gameplay systems" are in the works for the next iteration of the game, Kingdom Hearts 3D for the 3DS, and that some of these mechanics may even find their way into the long-awaited (but still unannounced) Kingdom Hearts 3.
For example, both Sora and Riku will be playable characters in the upcoming game, and Nomura is promising some differences between the two characters. The reason why Sora and Riku appear as they do in the first Kingdom Hearts game hasn't been explained, with Nomura simply teasing that it is "a secret" and necessary for the story.
Perhaps the most exciting revelation from the interview is Nomura's intention to include brand new Disney worlds for the upcoming sequel. Although Traverse Town and "other original creations" will make a reappearance, it'll be interesting to see exactly what Disney worlds make it into the next game. Frankly, we're not even entirely sure what Square Enix has yet to dig up from the Disney vault.

Whole new worlds sounds great, since if I have to visit Olympus one more time
And either way, hopefully this is the last side story to set up KH3, which it should be, judging by what happened in RE:coded. So everyone can finally stop with the BAW KH3 BAW.

The first thing that came to mind reading this was GOD DAMNIT WHERE IS KH3. Hopefully it will come one day, but I fear it's very very far away. :( While it's nice to be hopeful, it's like a long-lost love you met up with once in a bar in a faraway country. It was an amazing experience, but it just feels like you'll never find it again.

Well, they haven't done a Bambi, Princess and the Frog, or Toy Story world yet.

I looked into it...the correct worlds to use are Dumbo, a Latin America world from Saludos Amigos/Three Cabelleros, The Great Mouse Detective, a Muppet world (this is mandatory), maybe a random one based on a theme park ride or rides, and then take your pick from Pixar.

I always wondered why they never did anything with Toy Story, easily my favorite Disney movie only second to maybe the Nightmare Before Christmas or Lion King...
Can we just get KH3 ffs? By the time that game comes out I probably won't even care anymore

If Square Enix loved us, we would have...
Kingdom Hearts III
Final Fantasy VII remake (or FF6..?)
Final Fantasy XIV not be a MMO
Parasite Eve 3
Chrono Break
a Mana sequel that didn't suck
No more Chocobo minigame/racing games
No more crappy FFXIII spin-offs
But no... we have the opposite of all of those things.

So would you interact with the boy or with the toys? It doesn't make much sense to bring a world to a world within a world. There are a ton of franchises to exploit much better than Toy Story. Cars, Bug's Life, Robin Hood. Also, there is the whole Princess tie-in at the end of 2 to consider.

I'm not sure what the relationship is between Disney and Studio Ghibli, but seeing as how the Disney logo takes up half of the S.G. box art, any chance of seeing Miyazaki characters?
Although I'm not sure how that would work... KH has been about the meeting of Western and Eastern characters. I'm not sure how exciting it would be to see double the Eastern.

can i ask the fine readers of joystiq something...
All this does is make me lose interest in the saga since I don't have the patience to run around with a DS in hand looking like a 21-year old praying mantis 3 hours a day... I seriously don't understand how a franchise that was so insanely popular (and started out on consoles, mind you) now is on route to having MORE titles available for handheld systems... Just give me KH3 on PS3 before I completely lose interest in this series...

my question would be, are you guys as tired with all these handheld adaptations as i am? Seriously, imagine if Dissidia or Crisis Core were on PS3, I feel like so many big-name games are wasted on handhelds..

Well Sora's story will remain on the consoles. All the handheld spinoffs & prequels don't really interfere with the main story so it's not really ruining it for you. If you played 1 & 2 then you can wait for 3. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of other games that you can play in the mean time.

@Yezzir1128 See, the big name games like Dissidia and Crisis Core would be like FFVersus right now. Taking for ever to come out. With handhelds, you can make fast unique games without having to worry about too long of a production time.
Look at Dissidia Duodecim. Coming out in spring, was announced just last month. Better than the 5-6 years it took for FFXIII.

@Caanon Weathers Who cares? A Kingdom Hearts game is a Kingdom Hearts game. They're all part of the same canon, so I don't see how tacking on a solid numerical and releasing it on a console makes it any more "official" than, say, Birth by Sleep.
Birth by Sleep arguably has the best gameplay of the entire franchise. Being on a handheld doesn't seem to hamper that. And the overall game's not that much shorter than the console games if you just do a bare-bones playthrough of each.
