I don't get why you'd post this comment... coz if it appeared (which it did, your point is useless, coz it doesn't make sense and isn't true...

Oh the irony! Microsoft claimed that Kinect was the only camera device that could track full-body movement, but here Sony is doing the exact same thing using their (considerably) low-tech PlayStation Eye.

Gotta love PR-speak right? Right? :)

Cont. ...
I can get this game with a PlayStation Eye for half the price of a Kinect. So BOO-YAH! to Microsoft and their overpriced camera. :)

You're forgetting the white bed sheet to put in the background of your living room, high contrast clothes, and studio lighting needed to make webcam games work reliably.

The review says there are multiple issues with the tracking, and that's not likely to change; there is simply no way to do this reliably with a normal camera

White bed sheet - at most $5/owned
high contrast clothes - owned
lamp - owned

I do agree, though.

@Raffi256 Andrew states that if your walls are white , you need to put on something which is a different color, hence the jacket.. Why would you need a white sheet ?

For the kinect to do facial recognition you need your lights turned on and you shouldn't wear reflective clothing. If your glass frame is reflective its enough to completely throw off the kinect.. Thats not an issue right ?

The PS eye costs a fraction of the price, can run at 120 FPS. You also seem to forget that the ps eye is much better than the eyetoy at detecting light levels and lack thereof. The PS eye is not just a webcam, we had this discussion already and I remember you stating that you stood corrected and yet here you are again.

Sure feel free to exaggerate and to try and make out the ps eye is impossible to calibrate. It still doesn't change the fact that its basically doing the exact same thing as the kinetic, which is full body controller free gaming using a camera, the same thing the Eye toy did last generation, except this time round the camera is a magnitude better and is accompanied with move controllers to give it proper depth, where necessary..

I said it was impressive that it does 120 FPS, but its still a webcam. I know this is hard for people to understand, but kinect is NOT a camera, there is a camera in there but it has nothing to do with motion tracking.

Kinect needs ZERO lights to play the games, it works in complete darkness, there are some extra features that need lighting like face recognition but it doesn't affect gameplay.

On PSEye its the exact opposite situation, take The Fight for example. It has an optional head tracking feature, which is optional because you need good lighting and contrast for it to work correctly.

Developers aren't going to build any major games on PS Eye that rely on body tracking WITHOUT Move controllers. For many reasons:
1. They have to do it themselves, its not built into the platform.
2. It's limited to 2D movements perpendicular to the TV screen (you have to akwardly punch to the side)
3. Sony is pushing "it has buttons" as a competitive advantage.
4. Camera-based tracking is unreliable (dependent on a billion variables outside of their control)
5. Camera-based tracking is more CPU intensive than tracking point clouds from depth sensors.

Kung-Fu Live is an exception because it's a game made by a company who isn't in the business of making games, but selling middleware. Kung-Fu Live is a demo of their body tracking product.

Re-read your own argument..

"there are some extra features that need lighting like face recognition but it doesn't affect gameplay"

"On PSEye its the exact opposite situation, take The Fight for example. It has an optional head tracking feature, which is optional because you need good lighting and contrast for it to work correctly."

guess what ? The Fight works in complete darkness and guess what the head tracking is completely optional as you pointed out because you can use the move controller, so validity of point ?

Then we get to:

"1. They have to do it themselves, its not built into the platform. "

But also:

"by a company who isn't in the business of making games, but selling middleware. Kung-Fu Live is a demo of their body tracking product"

So what your saying is that Sony doesnt provide provide an API for body tracking, but that third party game developers are building body tracking apis and trying to sell it to third party developers ?

Re-read your own argument, its the funniest thing I have ever read.. Your showing how idiotic your own points are and actually debunking them yourself..

Well done thanks for that..

The head tracking is optional because it doesn't work reliably, that's my point. If it actually worked it could have been an essential part of gameplay, you could actually use more of your body instead of just waving flashlights around, but instead its just an optional gimmick.

"So what your saying is that Sony doesnt provide provide an API for body tracking, but that third party game developers are building body tracking apis and trying to sell it to third party developers ?"

Yes that's exactly what I'm saying, what's so funny? Developers either have to license middleware or build it themselves. This makes it riskier to build a game driven by body tracking.

"besting the lengthy process demanded of Kinect..."

Not sure what this means - I have never had to calibrate the kinect for a game.

Joystiq has been whining about kinect since day one, someone from MS must have peed in their cereal or something.

Also considering the review for the hardware on joystiq states that appart from the issue the reviewer found with the frame on their glasses causing an issue, they stated that the kinects set up and recognition of a new player was instantanious almost.

Yet here it says its lengthy and such, bit of a contradiction.

@This Little Man Says His Name Is

Kinect has exactly ZERO required calibration. There's an optional step that calibrates the microphones to room acoustics and optional step that enrolls the player for face recognition. Compare this to Move where EVERY game requires calibrations everytime you run it. It's not exactly painful, but no idea what Joystiq is whining about.

@Raffi256 Andrew is just a bad writer. Instead of previewing this game he made it his own personal fanboy piece. I'd be embarrassed if I were him. But as fanboys are, he is likely quite pleased with himself.

I saw this PAX, and even though it was played in an enclosed booth with a white background, it still had trouble removing the background from the player.
