Harmonix giving away a free Doors song at music stores for Record Store Day
10
This coming Friday is known in America as Black Friday, the day when millions spend their post-Thanksgiving Day off shopping for Christmas presents (and thus retailers all get to make sure they end the year "in the black"). In a more rebellious circle, it's also known as Buy Nothing Day, an anti-consumerism protest against a culture of spending. And here's one more celebration: Friday will also be known as "Record Store Day," a day to frequent your local record store and keep it alive in the face of the digital music revolution.
The music lovers at Harmonix are on board with that last one: The Rock Band 3 developer is offering free song tokens at participating record stores, and the purchase of any CD or record at those stores will earn you a free download of The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" to play in Rock Band 3. The deal is only while supplies last, unfortunately -- you'll need an actual card with a code to download the song.
Good luck to everyone who goes out to find one. We'll be enjoying Friday's other celebration, Mongolian Independence Day. Where's our DLC for that, Harmonix? Road House.

what record stores? I really only get my CD's at Best Buy so I hope they have it there. I could have waited one day to buy that new Kanye West joint to get my free song. Oh well!

So Harmonix are supporting "a day to frequent your local record store and keep it alive in the face of the digital music revolution" by offering a token for some digital music?
Admirable AND ironic. I like it.

People should really visit local stores more its a weird concept but before the inter-webs that's how we got our loud music, and your Dan Fogleberg, your Zima, hula hoops and pac-man video games, don't you see?

The download card is available at participating record stores, and you can find a store near you at www.recordstoreday.com. Not all the stores choose to participate in this, so you will want to talk to your local store. And this promotion is taking place at independently owned record stores, not Best Buy, so sorry, they're not included. And yeah, it's a little ironic that they're promoting a download, but at least it's encouraging folks to come in and buy something from a locally owned store. We thank Harmonix for that. Oh, and to clarify a little: Black Friday is not RECORD STORE DAY. That day is in April, but we do what we can to get folks to recognize and patronize their local shops all year long.

I'm thinking that my hatred of the Doors and my steadfast refusal to buy anything that day will be canceled out by my loves of going to the record store and getting free stuff. At least it'll give me one more song to play if someone decides to gift me a RB keyboard this Xmas.
