Check out a comparison of the commercial and the (slightly spoilery) clip from Dark Dawn after the jump -- just try not to think about why it took almost a decade for the translucent dragon to arrive. Was the commercial just prescient or something?
Classic Golden Sun commercial finally explained by Dark Dawn

Back in 2001, Nintendo released a fairly gorgeous commercial for Golden Sun -- however, for all its glitz and glamor, it wasn't exactly packing in the coherence department. A giant crystal dragon, totally wrecking shop in a jam-packed opera house? We don't remember that in the original Game Boy Advance RPG. As it turns out, there's a reason for that: That sequence wouldn't make it into the franchise until this very year, with the release of Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.

A decade long plan, or merely some designer looking back over previous work and remembering a good idea?

Never heard the term, "jap-packed" before. Sounds a little racist :P

Obviously. However, it's a very weird typo to make, especially since M and P are not close to each other.

Maybe by some freakish coincidence he's typing on an azerty keyboard, which has the P right above the M?

Never heard of AZERTY before. Very interesting. Well, I still doubt he's using that, though.
The thing about "P then hyphen" someone else mentioned makes sense, though.

Wondering why McElroy hasn't apologized for the offensive typo in the comments yet and changed the article wording...

Did anyone else notice, the TV advert ends with the crystal dragon shattered on the theatre stage, and the summon itself begins with the shattered remains being resurrected?
That's just awesome.

Only the Oda can foreshadow that far ahead... this is just an afterthought, but a very good one.

The hilarious thing is that I actually played Golden Sun in an orchestra hall WAY back, when the first one came out. Of course I didn't see the commercial until after that, but it was a crazy coincidence.
The orchestra hall was the Winspear in Edmonton

Of course if I had been older I would have appreciated the music rather than played a GBA game. Can't see live orchestras anywhere, that's for sure.

So we've gone from wondering what the commercial had to do with Golden Sun, to wondering how the heck it fits into the GS mythos... To paraphrase Futurama: "This just raises further questions"!

Someone mentioned that the type jap-packed is a little weird cause the "M" isn't close to the "P", yes they're correct there. However I think what had happened was he didn't hit the m and was going to put in the dash and hit the P right before the dash as the P is right below there.
So that makes perfect sense on how he made the mistake of typing jap-packed vs jam-packed.

Now I know partly why GBA games were so awesome. Kids back then had IMAGINATION, and that combined with kick-ass commercials like this were an awesome selling point. Everyone just imagined they were playing the game as if it had realistic graphics.

I don't know about you, but for me, both GS games for the GBA have aged really well in the graphics department, they're still stunning to look at, especially the summons. Also the soundtracks for these games were very well done.

I'm sorry but I kinda wish they hadn't made this 3D. GS sprites looked good, and they could have made them look better on the DS....

I like this kind of cameos and allusions.
Next Golden Sun devs gotta make that red dressed conductor chick into a summon too.
