maybe it's just me but i don't think most people will be getting this game for the prospect of amazing virtual poker. the charm is in the characters and you seem to have little familiarity with them past their names. i'm actually pretty surprised you don't know who Strong Bad is, given the fact that you're a writer on the internet.

I agree. I don't think that Telltale intended this to be a serious poker game in any way, shape, or form.
You've taken the game much too seriously, instead of playing it at face value.
You can't really compare this to the pacing of online poker, because it's a different experience. That would be akin to comparing Mario Kart and Gran Turismo, just because they're both racing games.

Sub par review, in my opinion.

@Lambrick Exactly, it's just an excuse to hear them interact. The game is an afterthought. It seems like you're docking the game points because it isn't internet poker. If that's the logic, give it zero stars, because this is a digitally distributed *single player* and *offline* poker game. By that definition it fails right out of the gate.

My favorite line in this review:

"On the 'Normal' difficulty setting, the characters play like lunatics who call and raise chaotically."

Have you looked across the table? They ARE lunatics, that's exactly why you want to play with them.

This game didn't need a review, Joystiq. It's fanservice.

Mario Kart doesn't fail as a racing game, though, so I don't see the comparison.

If the poker isn't good, and the dialog isn't that entertaining, what's the point? TF2 DLC?

I sadly got to the point after ~an hour of playing where I just said f*ck it and started going all in on every hand. I went from a wallet of -60K to getting the Dangeresque glasses, Tycho's watch and a wallet of 160k just from "All in" on every hand.

@Drew327 And thats what it feels like they were going for. Absolutely loved the game but just like other telltale games I may play them just once or 1 replay at a much later date. Not every game needs to hold attention for hours on end to be great. This review is one of the only joystiq reviews ive ever completely disagreed with.

The characters all do have their respective charms, but they do repeat themselves rather quickly. Tycho's foul mouth however never ceases to get a laugh out of me.

"Good game gentlemen. Oh, and you all can go f*ck your respective selves."

However, for 5 bucks, I'm perfectly content with playing one time until I've seen and heard all there is, and then let it gather dust in my Steam list forever.

For five bucks, it probably doesn't need a lot of replayability anyway, right? If you play it once and have a fun time, then it's worth it.

Agreed. I bought it, played for 6 hours and probably will never touch it again. It's like buying a movie ticket. you just watch it for 2 hours and then the ticket's worthless. The review seems to imply that he payed 10, 15 dollars for this, in which case he would have a valid complaint about the replayability. As it stands, $5 is less than a trip to the movies, so if it's just really a one-shot than it's fine. I give the game a 10/10 for what it is, but if you're a poker fan (I learned last week for this game. :p) or you're not familiar with most of the characters, you'd probably not like it.

not to mention this is just pretty much Telltale Texas hold'em 2010. when I preordered it I was expecting MORE than just texas hold'em, maybe some card game rule twists (these characters don't always play by the rules in their own universes) the trailer where Tycho rolling a 20 sided die kind of supported this theory of mine, sadly, I was disappointed.

He rolls his die to decide whether or not to play a hand.

He does it in gameplay, too.

@Drakkenfyre: yeah but i'm talking about a rule twist for everyone, or a whole new card game like New Vegas did with caravan. I knew they were probably going to be using Telltale Texas Hold'em as a base, so I'd think they'd add SOMETHING to the game other than new models and sounds on an updated telltale engine.

Some people will see something in a trailer, and not see it in the game, leading them to believe something else.

Good thing I know who's reviews to ignore in the future.

If you don't know the characters involved, you have no business reviewing the game. This game is hilarious if you know the characters.

The review over on DownloadSquad, you know, one of your sister sites, gave it a "Must Own."

Get tired of the lines? Skip them. Even ones I have heard several times are still funny. Seeing the characters interact is one of the big draws of this game. If you go in not knowing them, that takes alot away from it. This is not an online, multiplayer poker game. Don't judge it as such.

It's $5. I know $15 games that fail pathetically. This? This would have been worth it for me at $20. And it has unlocks for TF2.

You somehow don't know who Strongbad is, despite, like someone above said, being an editor for a website. Then you say you are familiar with Telltale's own games, are an editor for a video game site, and Strongbad has a game line by them. What? You didn't seem to notice the 5-part Strongbad game right up there with Sam & Max? Granted, it was only released for pc and Wii, but unless your only contact with Telltale is exclusively thru the online shops for the XBox and PS3, you should have heard of it.

Part of the game's draw is the characters in it.

Stating more or less that you don't know the personality of one of the game characters, complaining about said personality, then proceeding to compare it to something it is not, an online, multiplayer poker game, isn't a good way to start off a review.

It's almost, but not quite, like comparing NFL Blitz to a Madden game, and complaining that NFL Blitz doesn't have realistic tackling rules and in-depth, Madden-as-a-coach strategy.

@Drakkenfyre: I agree with that.

But while that may be true, disregarding his opinion simply because it does not address ones opinions own does not add credence to an argument.

Not acknowledging the primary draw of the game as a whole is his failure in this review. But by damning his opinions of a particular ASPECT of the game by simply pointing to another aspect does not logically conclude. At best, it is a hypocritical way to go about making judgments.

Atmosphere is one thing. Gameplay is another. It's possible to be great in one area, but not so much in another.

It's a poker game.

It does poker well.

It only does one kind of poker, admittedly, but that was explained up-front.

The entirety of this review boils down to this,

"This is one kind of poker. I don't understand the humor involved. It isn't the kind of poker I like, fast, online multiplayer poker. It fails."

Other places are giving this a favorable review. DownloadSquad's editor gave it a "Must Own". I think this is a case of someone who is not familiar with the things involved expecting something he is used to. If you don't know Penny Arcade, TF2, Sam & Max, or Strongbad, alot of the jokes you aren't going to get. But to say "I don't understand the humor, it isn't funny" isn't a fair review. It's kind of like liking standup comedy, and going to see Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and walking out disappointed because you didn't find it funny because it wasn't standup.

Have a good day.

...and yes, I caved and bought (for 7.50) Team Fortress 2 after a few hours of this game.

I'm all about gameplay depth and whatnot, but I'm really enjoying this game for what it is: a laid back, funny character-based distraction that cost me less than a big mac meal. I certainly have no complaints.

It's also worth noting that (I think) this is one of Telltale's 'pilot program' games (like Nelson Tethers) which means that, if it sells well enough, this might just be a little teaser for a potentially larger and deeper game along similar lines. I don't know about you guys, but I'd sure love to play an assortment of card games with the likes of Gman, Manny Calavera, Morrigan, Raz.. A great many possibilities which would be a lot of fun to see.

After playing this game for a little over an hour, Tycho's fold-happy behavior really starting grating on my nerves, ESPECIALLY when his winnable watch was on the table. The guy also looks fugly as hell when compared to the other characters... his cartoon-outline style looks very out of place in the game, even with Strongbad there. I wish someone else had been used in his place.

If what Brad says is true, then the only reason to go for this game is if you play Team Fortress 2 and want to win items for the classes. I was really hoping this would be a good game and not just some quick fanservice. But no multiplayer and half-assed poker dosen't really make me want to buy what is essentialy DLC for TF2, even if it is cheap.

Again, for TF2 fans, this is a no brainer purchase but for those who were expecting a texas hold'em poker game with some added charm, it's a crushing disapointment :(
