It's well worth $20. I've played quite a bit of it and am quite pleased. It's got some mechanical issues, but none that have been too angering. As for the story, well, who plays a game called 'Splatterhouse' for the story? That's like going to see 'Crank' and being pissed that the plot was boring.

The Deep Ones were a pain in the ass until I discovered that ripping off one of their arms, and then using Weaponised Grab on the rest made them not so irritating.

I bought it and enjoyed the hell outta it. You guys are one of the very few who gave this a bad review, I still don't agree with anything you or the others said.. You also forgot to mention a nice big bonus to this game: The WHOLE damn Splatterhouse original series is unlockable, and not the crappy Turbo port version. It's all gory and everything like the original Arcade was. That's 4 games for the price of one. Even without those other 3 games, I still think this was well worth the full price. I dunno Joystiq, but lately I haven't been agreeing with your reviews..

really it's so repetitive i'll be playing it in 30 minute spurts until i get through it. and he's not exaggerating about the load times they're some of the most ridiculous i've seen.

The mask only says "paint the walls red" when you pick up a pipe. and only the pipe never with a kill. As for there being only one QTE every baddie had 3 Splatterkills except the big ones.
I found the platforming parts to be too easy and never once fell off the edge due to "pixle problems".
Which beings me to "terrible brawler". You know it reminded me a lot of MadWorld, which it played just like (go figure) or any other bralwer for that matter it reminded me of.
And questionable controls? You mean basic controls every beat'em up/hack n' slash have? This is the same basic control layout GoW has, even Dynasty Warriors. (Only the R's and L's are different [if I remember correctly]).
Loading screens I can give you, but even going through on Brutal (second play through) I've seen 10 loading screens, not counting the movie based loading screens [the story] and loading from turning the game on.

I'll say it and many may not agree but just about every game is walk into a room and kill everyone. Some just have puzzles inbetween the kills, some don't. When going through MW campaign I realised all I was doing was walking into a room killing everyone and slowly advancing. Didn't stop me from enjoying it.

After reading this review I don't think taylor cocke ever played the original splatterhouse games in anyway, because this one was an homage to the originals and does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the original games. If you never liked the original splatterhouse games then avoid this, but if you enjoyed them this is a great game, aside from the horrible load times.

@asojax Honestly, the original Splatterhouse games weren't that good. The only thing it had was a dark atmosphere, grotesque visuals and gore, which helped it stood out from other games at the same time. If you took all that away you would have had a repittive game.

If your saying this is a homage to the Spaltterhouse games, then your pretty much saying "yeah this is repititve but it has lots of gore! Squee!"

It looks like at best it's a decent game for the weekend rental or bargin bin purchas.

Now are you talking about the arcade splatterhouse or the home ports? Because i loved the arcade version and never found it to be repetitive, that's not to say that it wasn't repetitive I just never found it to be. that's why i said that if your a fan of the original you should like the new version because like me i find the game fun and enjoyable

I'm glad I bought Splatterhouse. It's a lot of fun, and while there are some glitches and the gameplay isn't as polished as it could be it's kept me seriously entertained.
Also, the load times don't seem to be that big of an issue when you install it to your hard drive.

After a long discussion with Dan Tovar before an interview i did with him at comi-con, i was already sold.we blew almost 20-30 minutes on the love of the original before a 5 minute interview!

either way, i want to shake his hand. the game isn't perfect, but it's a damn good time.... unless your a demon. if you are, you're just gonna get your head bashed in with your dead buddie's arm!

I think I just found the difference between the Joystiq staff and it's readers: Maturity level. If all it takes to make a game "great" to you is adding excessive levels of blood and guts then you really need to grow a pair. Here's a thought, why not make a game with an actual plot, decent controls that don't require the dexterity of a seasoned contortionist, and how about something I can play in front of my 5 year old that won't make her forget how to sleep... This is just the latest example of what has gone so terribly wrong with the gaming industry. Just because they CAN make a game this ultra-gory and pointless, doesn't mean they SHOULD.

This is why you game responsibly. Don't play games like this in front of your five-year-old.

The developers remade an old game, a classic, and touched it up to make the violence and action all that more visceral, in the sake of fun. The excess amounts of blood and gore are there for the sake of exaggeration, because to a lot of people, having that much blood disproportionate to the actual wound is hilarious and fun.

The heart and soul of games lies in the fun factor. I'm pretty sure this game is more centered around having ridiculous amounts of fun beating the crap out of monsters rather than being about making sense and having a coherent plot.

Besides there are way worse things in the world. If you can't handle all that blood why don't you grow a pair?

What is with these control complaints?! Square was light attack triangle was heavy. X was jump and circle was grab/context sensitive. It's not like Dynasty Warriors(except cicle) or God of War don't have those controls.
