Square Enix has already proven itself entirely capable of creating compelling collectible card games within the virtual worlds of its Final Fantasy franchise -- in fact, occasionally, those mini-games became more engrossing than the adventures which surrounded them. That's why we can't wait to see what Square and CCG manufacturer Hobby Japan can do with the recently announced Final Fantasy Trading Card Game when it launches February 25, 2011.
Potential players can start bolstering their collections by picking up the Japanese version of The 3rd Birthday, which will include a promotional card. Though a handful of samples have been revealed (pictured above), the actual rules of the game haven't been detailed. We're going to assume that you have to play it over and over and over again until you're strong enough to win. Also, playing summon cards will take three to six minutes, depending on the strength of said summon. Also, Chocobos have gots to be up in the mix.

That's a lot of samples. I feel like I'm at Costco.
But will that promotional card be included in other versions? Preferably the North American version.

neat. I really like CCGs but I hate buying packs and having to store all the cards I amass. I used to play magic when I was younger but these days only play video game versions of card games. It sounds strange I guess but it's a lot nicer on my wallet and storage space.

You've activated my "Whatever" card. The effect that goes into play is Squall lying in bed, without a care in the world, that automatically negates your magic card's effect.

A little disappointed it isn't Triple Triad. Given the game's mostly simple nature (excepting the really convoluted rules like Same/Plus/Wall which can really get crazy at times), it's something I could very easily get all of my friends into playing/collecting.
I'm also a little disappointed that they decided to partner with a Japanese company to develop the game, I would love to see a Final Fantasy branded TCG developed by Wizards Of The Coast.

I would be as excited as a school girl if this was tripple triade.

Are they seriously just going to use character art from the games? Talk about cheap.

Seriously, I would pay cash moneys for a triple triad deck.
So much cash monies.

They already had triple triad cards. I remember when I was really young I got some from Japan for my birthday.

More like re-using existing arts to squeeze more money.

Square certainly does love tooting their own horn. I mean, I'm certainly not guiltless, as I love the Super Smash Brothers series, but... I dunno, it feels like a bit more of a disappointment that Square is just milking their own franchises like this.

More engrossing than the adventures that surround them? Are you mad? Both FFs with the card games were great games. Ugh... I sometimes hate the little knocks Joystiq does sometimes. I hardly touched the card games, while they were fun they were frustrating more times than not.

Triple Triad, for a little while at least, had some third-party online versions. Now that you have reminded me of its awesomeness, I may have to research if they still exist...

I've only been a fan of FF since February and I thought to myself earlier this year that there should be trading card game of it. Surprised it took them this long really.

Ummm,,,, To all of you who are wishing it was Triple Triad, Triple Triad cards have been out for a while. Years even. I had a bunch from packs I bought a long time ago at EBgames. The only downfall was that the card names were in Japanese and I was pretty much the only person I knew with the cards. Luckily, as another person posted, they do (and did) fetch a fair amount on ebay these days.

It would be sweet if they created all new art for each of the cards instead of rehashing the same artwork that was released with each of the games when they originally came out. I would love to see an overlying theme for them all to adhere to but it doesn't look like that's gonna be how it goes down...
