Wow, while it does bear striking similarities to starcraft, i'm going to wait to see gameplay to say its a full on rip-off. it does have touch controls which would be interesting, and at least the 3rd faction is robots and not highly evolved aliens. thats a good thing... right?

At what point does generic, unoriginal garbage like this cross the line into Intellectual Property infringement?

Because I think you could prove overt similarity between this and Starcraft.

As for the trailer itself, Starcraft 1 had better CG back in 1998. For shame, whatever developers made this.

@Invigilator well, Blizzard pretty much stole their races from warhammer 40k, so other than the name similarity they don't really have too much room to complain.

True that the space marines were pretty damn close from 40k, and the eldar to protoss is obvious.

At the same time though 40K went and ripped off the Zerg for tyranids.

Starcraft did pioneer a whole frontier, space cowboy type of genre, that was then used for horrible shows like Firefly, and then idiots ask why SC2 is like firefly. The circle never ends, does it!

Tyrannids were made to look more Zerg-like after Starcraft came out.

Pioneered space cowboys?

Eh, Roger Corman beat them by a long way. Even Space Truckers came before Starcraft.

Space marines might have come from Warhammer but they didn't come up with that either. Go back to Heinlen and the Starship Troopers power armor.

Wrong.

Go and look at Space Hulk which came out in 1989, which in itself was inspired by Alien.

They are as Zerg as it gets.

@Nashk

The Tyranids had the general space bug concept earlier, but of course that was directly ripped off from other earlier fictions.

Look at how the Tyranids were modified after Starcraft 1 came out: they all look practically identical to the hydralisks from Starcraft 1.

It's rarely a case of one company completely ripping another off for fictions, its a mix of back and forth.

Now, if you want to talk about unoriginal stuff, Dragon Age from Tolkien is pretty much as bad as it gets.

What? I couldn't think of a single LOTR reference in Dragon Age. If you want to compare it to something to it with a Song of Ice and Fire.

There was another app I saw that looked like it's logo was ripped from the starcraft 2 cover art, except it had an explosion behind him. It wasn't this app though, because it was an RTS. For all the innovation that is in the app store, there is certainly still quite a few shameless ripoffs.

Well, iOS needs a good rts, and gameloft doesn't really dissapoint imo. Warfare Inc. Was alright, but really really minimal and basic. Land and Sea or something like that, was a lot nicer, but no multi and no campaign.

I'm excited for this one. Hope it gets on the iPad too

Need to wait and see for gameplay first. I don't care if they're ripping off each other or what. What matters is they deliver it good and the gameplay or the overall game is awesome.

@Mechanism If the point is dollars, making money while there's money to be made is all there is to it. If the point is respect as an artist, then copying is as unoriginal as it gets.

The problem comes when everyone copies and no one innovates--the industry stagnates and eventually risks becoming irrelevant. There are always leaders and followers, so thankfully we still have plenty of leaders making video games.

Having said that, the one thing a developer like Gameloft might give back is making such games playable and enjoyable on a mobile device (which is not meant for the traditional hardcore PC or console experience).

However, since I'm not a mobile gaming fan in general (aside from the NGPC back in the day), I have no experience with any Gameloft games, so I can't praise or condemn their products.

Hey I was kidding around and just being stupid referring to Satan as in that evil guy from the bible. I agree 100% with what you say though, it gets pretty annoying seeing others try to either make money or make a name for themselves by stealing ideas. Being a graphic designer, I see it all the time :(

Their games are quite good so I'm looking forward to this next batch of games.
