According to a recent report from Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian, the firm's "industry checks" have revealed that Walmart has begun selling used games in over 500 of its stores. We decided to perform our own industry check, and the very first Walmart we called (in Tulsa, Oklahoma) was indeed stocking used games. The clerk we spoke to said that the store "just started carrying them." Further investigation revealed that used titles are also available on Walmart's website.
The company revealed plans to begin a used game program earlier this year, and Sebastian believes Walmart will "focus on the deep-value end of the market (e.g., games under $20 ASP)," potentially preventing "overlap" with used game juggernaut GameStop. Cheaper, older games do seem to dominate Walmart's used inventory, although we did spot Rock Band 3 for $50. Assuming Walmart maintains this focus on cheaper games, Sebastian believes the program could "ultimately expand the market for used games."
Sebastian notes that getting into the used game business isn't easy, requiring extensive inventory tracking, refurbishment and restocking. He concludes that it's unlikely for other used game distributors to be as "tightly integrated" as GameStop. We've certainly seen big names try and fail at the used game racket before ... Walmart included.

Yay! More half-arsed attempts to cash in on the used game market that will unexpectedly be discontinued 6 months in!

That's probably the 100th time I've seen Cthulhu mentioned recently. What is this, Lovecraft's birthday or something? Or am I just missing out on some major world news event involving aliens and sea creatures and whatnot.

Anything to get rid of GameStop. Seriously, WalMart is a better game store than GameStop. I'm able to get games at WalMart that aren't sold at GameStop. I generally get a better price at WalMart than I do at GameStop. WalMart has a larger selection of PC games and PC peripherals than GameStop. WalMart has yet to buy an awesome niche game store that sells NES games and replace it with a sterile pawn shop. For once, I'm siding with WalMart on this one.

@Ballistic H I have seen. I've also seen what WalMarts do to local businesses, I've seen how WalMart treats its employees. Still, in a lesser-of-two-evils scenario, WalMart is a less detestable leech than my GameStop that shares the WalMart's parking lot.

As long as I have to look behind a glass case to find a game, then hunt around for a sales clerk, who has to go retreave the key for the case, I will continue to buy at Gamestop. Even if I didint have to do all that, at least game stop employees know something about games

@Einlander
Or any store where games are not locked up behind a glass case.

@Einlander How dare you call yourself a gamer? Buying a game at Wal-Mart is like playing an RPG, but in real life. First you must do side-quests to earn enough "money" before you can even entertain going there. Once you have enough, you must mount your trusty steed, be it bike, car, bus, skateboard or walking and battle numerous brutish enemies that all have the ability to kill you while you make your way to Wal-Mart. Once you gain access inside, you must traverse the aisles through scores of NPC with varying degrees of AI until you find your way through the labyrinth of crappy movies, bad CDs, perfume and t-shirts to the crystal sarcophogas. Then you get to play a splendid mini-game of locating your treasure amongst all of the look-a-like treasure. Once you actually find it, then you must locate the keymaster, who is the only one who can release the treasure from its prison. The battle isn't over yet. Now you must pay for the damn thing and get out unharmed as even more braindead AI will be roaming the paths on your journey to get outside and home. See? It's fun!

Wal-Mart could buy Gamestop outright if they really wanted to get into the used games business. When you think about the size of your average Gamestop, it could probably fit inside the current games section at Wal-Mart anyway. They could throw a banner over their games section, transfer inventory from the Gamestop locations, close them, and cut the overhead to nothing (after all the leases expired).
Whether or not they would is another question. Also, I feel a little bit like Scrooge McDuck right now (I know at least three people that would be out of a job).

My walmart had a bin of used games, including the Burger King games for $8 each. So I think it is safe to say they have no idea what they are doing.

Blockbuster game rush stores used to have the best trade values on games. All someone has to do to win the used market is give a more fair trade price and take a little less profit.

Why do you think Blockbuster quit Game Rush? I'm sure what you just said is part of the reason. There is so much crap that goes into buying and selling used games that I would be impressed if Wal-Mart actually pulls through with this without trying to buy out GameStop.

Walmart could easily take down gamestop if they are smart about this.
