Is the 360 friendly to imports like the PS3?

(promise this isn't fanboy trolling... I don't know because the 360's best games are north american, usually).

No. See, 360 games CAN be region-locked, but aren't always. More often than not, they are locked.

An import site that I like to use, Play-Asia.com, will list the region locking for a game once they know what it is. Here's the page for Catherine on 360:
http://www.play-asia.com/Catherine/paOS-13-71-br-49-en-70-40in.html

Once they have the details for it, that'll be updated.

@BPMOmega XBL PSN Steam - As someone that imports games all the time, I can say with certainty that the 360 version will probably be region locked. 360 games almost always are.

The PS3 version is almost certainly not going to be region locked. Now I just have to decide whether or not I want to import a text heavy game.

PS3 can't be region locked Blu-Ray disc doesn't allow for it. Once you get into 720P there's no need so Blu-Ray is region free. Howeverif you import from other countries and don't use 720P it wont run properly

Blu-ray doesn't allow it? Don't watch many movies, do you? Blu-ray definitely allows for region-coding and locking. Looks like they're just choosing not to do so.

OK, the movies can be region locked (and very often are not).

However, PS# blu-rays can not be region locked. There is no region for them on the PS3 itself. It's just not possible. The one snag is that games can be made compatible only with the DLC from one of the stores other than the one you traditionally use. Thus, importing a game might force you to only get DLC from the appropriate store (which is possible if you import PSN cards).

But there will never be a region locked PS3 blu-ray game.

@Dustin F - I've been under the impression that Blu-Ray had region locking, but that it was rarely enforced, and that even if it was, Japan and the United States are in the same region now. I'm probably wrong though, and since it hasn't been an issue, I've never researched it.

Having said all of that, I've never heard of a game for the PS3 that was region locked, nor a Blu-Ray movie. I don't really import movies though (except for a few choice things from Japan) so I'm not sure.

360 games are another story. I've yet to come across a Japan exclusive 360 game that could be played on an American 360.

I know Blu-Ray movies that have online might sometimes lock you out from watching the movie, or their online features, if you're in the wrong region.

I guess I'm being unclear. PS3 format blu-ray discs are not the same as blu-ray movies format discs, even though the PS3 can play both.

The latter can be locked to a region, but the former cannot.

You will come across some movies that won't work on some PS3s, but not PS3 game discs. It's clear the PS3 does know what region it was intended to be sold in, however, and it's clear there is something like region locking for some content, but not PS3 Blu-ray game discs.

I wish the 360 were the same way, but I understand why MS isn't going that route yet.

I suspect we'll see far less of this region crap in the next generation. The PS3's lack of this control has not harmed anyone, and may have led to a small additional bit of business.

It's nothing to do with MS. Yes the 360 does use DVDs which have region locking, but MS doesn't define if a game can be played across multiple regions. It's the publishers.

@This Little Man Says His Name Is
It absolutely does have everything to do with MS. Console manufacturers license all software for their platform - they get to decide whether publishers are allowed to region-lock content or not.

For two examples, see Nintendo DS and Wii (or DSi, probably 3DS too, sadly). DS did not provide a way to region-lock games, so no DS games are region-locked. Wii does provide a way to region-lock games, so all or almost all Wii games are region-locked. This is entirely Nintendo's decision (to permit the capability - publishers might have some choice about whether to use it).

To put this argument more briefly: if Microsoft ever want to say to publishers 'from now on, we will only permit games to be published on 360 if they allow play from all regions' - they can do just that. That's effectively what Sony does.

I'd congratulate Sony for not permitting region lock this time around - region locking is a highly anti-consumer practice that frankly should probably have been ruled illegal by free trade courts, except that said courts are unfortunately all about promoting the rights of companies and not at all about promoting the rights of customers (or employees/citizens/etc, but that's another story). Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a practice that the rest of the industry is moving toward...

And who's choice is it to enable the region locking? Publishers.

MS has no voice over its use or not, the Publishers choose to use it or they don't.

Don't blame the feature, blame the user.

It won't.

Sadly, this part of the world inhibits sexuality in this emerging form of expression (video games). That's unfortunate, but you can't even have comic sex like Hot Coffee without (then) Senator Clinton trying to outlaw it. She doesn't raise an eyebrow that you can buy graphic pornographic DVDs by mail order and play it on the TV. actual people having sex, vs pixels, and somehow she's mad about a playstation game.

Japan's ahead of the world on understanding video games to be an outlet for different types of story telling.

this game isn't for me... I just don't care for the genre, but it makes sense to me to permit the full range of stories that we see in books and movies.

Too true. Or if they have internet access (such as from a PS3) they can access a porn site online. I'm sure some even work on the wii.

But somehow video games lead to hysteria.

Try doing some research on the Japanese gaming industry first before making your comment.

If you look at just console games, the Japanese gaming industry is a lot more censored then the western one.

For an excellent recent example, remember a little game called Mafia 2 and it's collection of playboy magazines? The Japanese release of it has big fat black bands across them.
There are a lot more examples like that as well where anything remotely adult is censored to the shit house in the Japanese version.

I have no idea how it actually is going to be played, but even if it's a glorified interactive movie, at least it will be a halfway interesting one compared to "spacemen gotta kill d00dz", "soldiers gotta kill d00dz", or "androgynous teenagers gotta kill d00dz".

@DokiDokiBawanga - Since this is an in house Atlus game, I'd imagine it will come out in the US. There are costs associated with dubbing and production, but I'd say there is a large enough (although niche) fanbase here to cover them.
