Hmmmmmm

I'm probably in the minority here, but I thought the setting and time period of Brotherhood was ideal...

The:
- Weapons
- Outfits
- Architecture
and even language (as well as music) all comes together to create the immersive AC universe I know and love, I'd hate to see it replaced by a more modernistic, gun-focused environment so soon.

There was such an overwhelming sense of place in Rome, and Venice (to name my favorites) that it seems like a tragedy to be done with them already. Eventually due to the nature of the game & story, they will have to move along in history...

I'm just not sure if it's time yet.

I think Ezio has had enough time in the lime light. How about an assassin from France during the times of the revolution?

@SamE I've been saying revolutionary France for a while now. So many murders, so much violence and betrayal, such a massive uprising against authority that didn't actually come to anything until another 60 or 70 years after... ça serait fort, non?

I think it'd be cool if it was an assassin from the US revolutionary war. Run around assassinating British redcoats in Colonial America. Maybe it would have 2 player co-op play too, and the second player was a badass Native American guy.

I don't think i've played a single game set in that time period (I'm sure many strategy games exist for that though).

@SamE Thinking about this a bit more, so many incredible characters, locations and events to use... The Sun King, Versailles and the winding old streets of Paris, before Hausseman had his way, storming the Bastille (less dramatic than most people think it was, they were just looking for ammo rather than freeing the prisoners... the 7 or 8 people who were locked up just took advantage of the situation and got out.)

This was actually my first idea but I think it's too much of a leap forward in the time line, also with guns being more prevalent at the time it would make sword play redundant.

I love your native American co-op idea a lot :D

@SamE - I posted this over on Kotaku; figured I'd share it here as well. I had posted this in response to another commenter who believed that "if you can think of the time period then it's too obvious, and the French revolution is the king of obvious". Anyhoo:

"Assassin's Creed, on the whole, is about Desmond's battle against the Templars. Yes, I find his ancestors incredibly interesting (Ezio more so than Altaïr), and I love the history manipulation (Minerva talking to Desmond thru Ezio? Awesome), however, I feel that they should be able to encapsulate each ancestor in one game. There wasn't even enough of a good story in Brotherhood to warrant the campaign.

I don't see how the French revolution is the "king of obvious". It's an easily drawn out theory, once you take in the whole 300-year-leapfrogging idea, but that theory is actually pretty bland, considering they've only made one, 300-year jump through time, from the Crusades to the Italian Renaissance.

Hell, they could go 100 years down the road from Ezio, play as his great great grandchild in 17th century Europe with the scientific revolution (hello, upgrades!), Baroque art, King Louis XIV's reign in France, and General Crisis throughout Europe during that time. Scenario: We could start the game off near the end of the Holy Roman Empire economic crisis in 1625, pretty much in the middle of the 30 Years' War, watch King Louis XIV rise to power in 1638 just as the English Civil War is starting. Need I bring up the major historical figures that helped with the scientific revolution? Copernicus and Galileo both lived during the 30 Years' War, so their aid in the scientific revolution could bring some serious badass weaponry, help our European assassin get on his feet, and add some twists and turns in the cannon."

Ezio is the main reason I loved AC:II & AC:B so much. I'm not saying I couldn't grow to like another character just as much, but anything with Ezio I'm down for. I don't want AC:B to be the last I ever hear of him.

Let's not forget that the artifacts the Templars are using Desmond to find are located all over the world. Europe doesn't have to be the only continent we get to play!

Just imagine! Assassin's Creed: African Safari.

As another said, I think it is time to move away from Europe. So far we've had the MIddle East and Europe. I think an asian nation (another bastion of "advanced" civilization) should be next up. Personally, I would love to see the Meiji era in Japan, which i think would be well suited for these games. But also several different time periods in China could also work very well. Just don't know how that would fit into the whole "ancestor DNA" plot device.

@scratchh - What about the artwork with the Egyptian assassin that came out about a month prior to the Assassin's Creed comic (set in Russia) announcement? Nobody has even touched that.

There was that art piece, plus the statues of the assassins in the Monteriggioni sanctuary, with Altaïr as the center piece. Once of the assassins shown was an Egyptian lady with a asp; she was the one who killed Cleopatra. All of the Master Assassin's shown in the Sanctuary are all European or Asian: Mongolian, Persian, Chinese, Egyptian, Babylonian and Italian (not Ezio, but another man, Leonius). These, plus Altaïr, Ezio and Nikolai, make 9 known Master Assassins. Seeing as how all of these are either European/Middle Eastern or Asian (only 2 Asians), I don't see it moving too far away.

There was a recent story about the "major" Assassin's Creed game for 2011, where someone was quoted as saying that the Japanese don't want Ubisoft touching their history, essentially saying "people want it, but don't distort out history". I can't find the story, but hopefully someone else has seen what I'm talking about.

@KiraViBritania I'm all for the Japan idea. I mean, aren't ninjas supposed to be the ultimate assassins? Stealthy and whatnot? An Assassin's Creed game set in japan would be like, the Tenchu game I've waited all my life for. Not to mention that their particular architecture and culture would make a great facelift for the series.

PS: Agree with the Ninja Gaiden comment.

Just thinking out loud here... the Assassin's sanctum in monteriggiono had statues of assassins from alot of different places (the egyptian lady arc is going to be a cool one)
but 14th~15th century japan would be great if Ubisoft's designers/engineers got a hold of it

Make it so

That's someone else's ancestor, not Desmond's. The memories are being experienced by someone named "Daniel Cross" if Wiki is to be believed. Thus, it would be fine as a spin-off, but I'd rather they stick with the main plot (Desmond's story) until it's finished.

The question of running the franchise into the ground comes up when the quality of said games goes down. If they keep the games finely tuned, progressively improve and expand upon the gameplay, and continue the awesome story, I can't see it becoming a problem for at least another two years.

Let's see. If they changed it up completely everytime, why even call it assassins creed? Mario games are the same thing everytime yet people still love him. You know why? Because that's how they know Mario. Why change what made it popular in the first place? If MGS took out the stealth, it wouldn't be MGS anymore. If GTA took out the free roaming, it wouldn't be GTA anymore. You have to keep it the same or else it loses it's identity.

Well, there needs to be another assassin related to Desmond, so why not something during the civil war or something? Or WW2? But in total honesty, I think it's time for Desmond to get his own game, they're building up to it in AC:B You can tell they're working on how he'll play, and you see his assassin uniform start to take form with his new hoodie and such. Maybe with someone new in the background, like having Desmond enter the Animus from time to time and go through some more of his ancestors to gain new skills. Something like that.

They had been talking about a WWII-era Assassin during AC2's development. A female one, even. But they decided to avoid the World Wars, because that ground is a little too well-trodden.

Civil War, on the other hand...I could see that working pretty well.
