Steam Treasure Hunt promotion giving away games for in-game accomplishments
16
Steam, the market's leading innovator for promotions to make you buy irresponsible amounts of their product, has struck gold once again with its current Treasure Hunt promotion. Here's how it works: Every two days, four "objectives" become available, requiring hunters to perform both out-of-game and in-game tasks for prizes. For example, current goals include setting up a Steam profile picture, or earning a ridiculously high score in Chime -- which, like all the other games with objectives on the list, is discounted during the two-day period.
Anyone who accomplishes one of the four tasks will be eligible for a drawing at the end of each two-day chunk, through which 20 users will receive five games off their wishlists for free. Anyone who accomplishes 10 of the goals during the entire promotion will be entered to win the grand prize: 100 games of their choosing from the Steam platform. There are also exclusive Team Fortress 2 hats to be distributed to fervent hunters, which, let's be honest, is going to sell more games than all the other prizes up for grabs. People just love them some virtual hats.
[Thanks, Zayd!]

The contest isn't going to draw in that many people.
The hats will.
As soon as I saw the hats listed on the side, I thought "Oh, shit."
Most people will be able to get the first one. The second one isn't that hard. But unless you have every single game they will use for the promotion, the third one is going to be a bitch.
It requires 28 goals. All of them. And that means buying alot of games.
Also, the goals, at least some of them, are retroactive. I had two, one for an avatar, and one for getting the Iron Curtain in Poker Night at the Inventory.

Ridiculously high score in Chime?
It's easy, I got it on my first playthough of the song.

Not too bad of a deal.
I got chime because of it, while before I was simply ignoring it even though I do like most of the indie games, and while there's some annoyances in it, the music and concept make up for it. Especially only for $1.25.

Joystiq: Yesterday's news, today.
Feel free to bring on the down votes, but this site is supposed to report the latest news and it's insane how slow they're getting now.

I noticed that a bit lately.
Sales getting stories on their last few hours. This contests, which is going on it's third day tommorrow. Stories which are a week old finally getting here.
At least it isn't Big Download. They are JUST now reporting on the Back to the Future game trailer.

I love that you have to buy games, spend a crapton of time to get the achievements and then you MAY win some free games. Awesome. The games you win will be the ones you didn't have to buy to enter the contest in the first place...so, that's all of two or so.

@waterhand I bought Chime for $1 and am still having fun with it. Already had the Iron Kurtain and the Avatar completed. No interest in getting RUSE.
3/4 ain't bad.

Just think of it as a sale, in which you could win some free games like the last one. but only if you actually play the games you buy, unlike most of the games people get in steam sales because of their backlog from all those steam sales. :p
