Rumor: New SSX developed by Skate team members
46
EA Sports' Peter Moore may consider it an "obscure new title" being teased in a recent VGA trailer, but word in the ski lodge is that it could be hinting at the new SSX game. A Kotaku source tells the site that a new installment in the abandoned snowboarding franchise has been in development at EA Canada by "much of the Skate team." The expectation is that Skate's inspired and innovative use of the right analog stick to perform tricks will transfer into the series.
Whispers and hints of a legitimate SSX title have been echoing through the mountains since last year, with things taking a more substantial turn with the domain registrations of "SSX: Deadly Descent" and "SSX: First Descent." The VGAs will take place this Saturday, December 11, on Spike.

This could be amazing news or just okay news. Put simply, it depends on whether the overworld will more closely resemble SSX 3 or SSX on Tour, respectively.

I don't know, adding Skate like controls seems like a great way to ruin a great arcade style game. Color me apprehensive.

Yeah EA has a weird fetish with putting everything on the right stick with their sports games. Buttons are just fine thanks!

@Agies The SSX games (namely Tricky) has been one of my favorate franchises ever. While I'm frikken stoked that it may make its return, I have to agree with you on the controls. The shoulder button combo system was perfectly suited for those games and it makes me feel that perhaps it may not be as crazy due to the "flick stick" scheme they're pushing.
Please EA, let me do the worm on a snowboard flying through the air just one more time.

Mmm... not totally with you on the voice acting. I thought that the expensive celebrities didn't add much compared to the voice actors in the other games.
In terms of where I'd like to see the game budget spent, I'd rather they focus on licensing good music. SSX3 had a superb soundtrack with tons of variety.
And of course On Tour sucked in on all fronts. No voice acting for your characters, no dynamic music system, and the soundtrack was all pretty much indistinguishable metal.

No, I don't want the rumor to be true in this case. The skate team strives for realism, I don't want that, or any of that reboot crap. EA, you open your BIG studio again and make a sequel to SSX Tricky, with those cool DVD extras which I thought every game from then on would have.

Wow, I'm really excited about this, but at the same time a bit skeptical.
I mean, I love using the analog stick in Skate to perform tricks, and it works really well for that game, but I'm just not sure if that'll translate well for an arcade snowboarding game. The SSX series is all about fun and ridiculous tricks, stunts and jumps and just thinking about pulling off some of those moves with an analog stick has me a bit worried. But I don't want to make any quick judgements, so I'll wait and see.
By the way, what ever happened to EA Big?

I would love an updated version of SSX: Tricky. Just give me HD graphics, a few new characters and courses and I would be very very happy!

I second this.. I spent many, many hours playing SSX Tricky on my PS2 and like others, watched the extra videos for the content and expected this from all future games. The voice acting was well done I thought as well but situational music was also pretty slick (though the subsequent version of SSX was king for music).
Keep the shoulder buttons!

If true I just lost all interest in the game. I hate all the EA analog stick crap, which basically trades precision for "realism," as if flicking a stick is realistic. Ugh. I'm dying for a new SSX but not like this.

I'm skeptical about the Skate team develop this since I'm not sure if having all the moves mapped to the right analog stick will translate well in the over-the-top arcade style SSX is known for.
I'd be happy if they just gave me HD versions of the SSX games from the PS2 days!

If there is a game being made, this is my wishlist:
1. Characters will look like adults, not big headed children
2. City based levels will be included (like Tricky and SSX 3)
3. Favorite characters will be included
4. Any control scheme allows for a deep amount of tricks
5. Tricks can be held till the last second
6. Lots of shortcuts and alt. paths
7. Huge jumps and falls (5 to 10 second air time)
8. Large amount of unlockables (clothing, boards, tricks)
9. Track editor (I know, this is unreasonable but would still be cool)
Other than this, the team is free to do what they want :) Hopefully, the franchise is in good hands.

Ive always hated the fact that people say SSX is a Snowboarding game.
It's a racer before its anything else.
If the Skate team is going to take the SSX franchise into the true Snowboarding genre and not a racing game, im all for it.

@ungeheier technically it is a snowboarding game. not a legitimate, nor realistic or practical one. it had the elements of racing and tricks that were out of this world. you mention ssx and you have to at least mention their trick system. it was organic and easy to do, and thats what made it fun.
the game was nowhere near true snowboarding,. but they managed to fit in the racing and tricks while going down a mountain on a board, with snow.
if the skate team takes it to a true snowboarding genre, they will certainly kill the hopes i had of having a true ssx game for this generation of consoles. hearing that the right analog stick is the focus kinda throws me off, but im hopeful they can pull it off. and if not, oh well i suppose.

It's not a snowboarding simulator. It's a snowboarding fantasy. If they decide to go in a realistic direction, you can count me right out. There are plenty of games like that, but nothing else matched the sheer jubilant madness of the first three SSX games.

SSX (namely the first and third) is the only snowboarding series I've ever enjoyed. Hell, it's really the only extreme sports series I've ever enjoyed. Please let this be true, and if it is, please don't eff this up EA.

EA, PLEASE use SSX Tricky as the foundation for this new game. You guys got it right with that game. Stick with what works. If you add the Skate controls, you may end up with another game like the NBA game you just cancelled!!

Just update Tricky, add some new levels and I'll buy it.

I may be in the minority here, but while I enjoyed SSX and Tricky (still have Tricky), the over-the-topness kinda got old for me. I'd love to see a more realistic take on SSX a la skate, with perhaps an arcade mode to go nuts in tricky-style.

The control was never SSX's problem. The problem is, it went from an quick arcade game with imaginative characters and locations, to a boring sandbox game set on a generic mountain for completionists in the sequels.
And I hated Skate. It tried too hard to be gritty and real, and forgot that it's supposed to be fun.

SSX3 was one of the best games I've ever played, mainly due to an intuitive yet dense and crazy unrealistic trick system. Not to mention the amazing soundtrack and great voice work. Even the DJ guy isn't annoying after your 8th playthrough.

I came home today. After getting a haircut. It could be an awful haircut. This is the best day I've had in months because of THIS NEWS.
I completed each SSX, Tricky, 3 and On Tour (ugh on OT) with every character to 100% including unlockables, something I've never done in another game save two platinums, let alone an entire franchise.
I don't care if the Skate team is on it. As a matter of fact, I think that's a plus. However, if they merely port over their "flick stick" controls, I will be extremely disappointed. The combos with the shoulder buttons were such a deep, rich system. Don't F with something that's perfect. Show respect to this classic franchise and the controls it was built upon. Just blend SSX Tricky with SSX 3, and I will buy one, maybe two copies, day one.
I honestly hope that this article's mention of flick stick controls was merely guessing on part of the reporter, not the EA/Kotaku source.
