If you own a GameCube, odds are you probably have a copy of Smash Bros. Melee, arguably the platform's greatest game. It sold like it was, anyway -- over seven million copies were moved worldwide. Those sales were the fruit of what Sakurai says was a "grueling development cycle," very different from how he crafted the follow-up, Smash Bros. Brawl. Honestly, he's kinda underselling it.
"I worked on that game for 13 months straight, after all, without a single Sunday or holiday off that whole time," Sakurai recalls in a Famitsu interview translated by 1UP. "During parts of it, I was living a really destructive lifestyle -- I'd work for over 40 hours in a row, then go back home to sleep for four," he added. Putting himself through the grinder like this stemmed from concerns about spearheading the massive undertaking, which Sakurai called the biggest project he'd ever worked on.
Today, he looks back on it as "the sharpest game in the series," adding that it's "speedy all around and asks a lot of your coordination skills." To him, "it just felt really good to play" and was the most hardcore entry to date. As for his latest, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it was more an attempt to find some middle-ground and present a more accessible game -- and to finally help us solve one of gaming's greatest debates, of course.

Melee was amazing. Spent countless hours on it. If only brawls online wasn't broken and limited by the Wii. Could have been epic. All great games.
The man worked hard so we could play hard.

@Smokemonsta I didn't think it was the online. Melee didn't have online and it was fine.
Brawl just felt clunky and slow relatively.
A shame. We used to keep the GameCube on 24/7 with Melee in. We'd play 3 or 4 player games usually at least 15 hours a week. For years. It was ridiculous how much we played that game - thousands of hours.
We got tired of Brawl within less than a week. It didn't feel as exciting or as much skill dependant. Arguably, though, it's a bit of an uncanny valley effect - it's so close to what we view as the real thing that minor differences are extra bothersome, whereas a bigger departure would be much less so.

The online is "broken" simply because it sucked.
I never have lag. In fact I am host many times in other games like halo. Yet I couldn't get a single 4 player match to go with friends (none of us could it would always lag out for someone or never connect)
Not to mention no real form of match making, and the friend system was such a nuisance.
It was about as bare bones as it gets. Mario Karts online was much better, didnt have much more functionality, but I didn't have a lag fest every game.
I loved brawl, it was a little floaty not as tight as melee, and online is only a plus but it would have given the game so much more if done right.

Same here, a group of my friends literally wore out a few controllers with Melee. I have owned about a dozen consoles and the only console I had to replace controllers for was the GameCube, because of Smash Bros. Melee.

Last time I tried online with Brawl, I couldn't get anyone. I sat there for ten minutes, and no one joined.
If anyone in the group lagged, it slowed everyone down. The game would slow down to match. I had matches where it was moving at like 5 FPS, and control input took several seconds to activate. That, and without friend codes, you saw no names. As far as you were concerned, you were fighting bots.

@M4L My friends and I played Melee so much that we wore out some controllers too. Also Melee is so timeless it's still sold for $30 on Amazon and Gamestop after nearly 10 years (depreciates well but kind of a ripoff)! I bought the game like 3 times a well (too many scratches on the first two disks).

man, so many good memories of Melee. after playing it at my cousins house, i went a bought a Gamecube to play it. after that, me and my friends played the shit out of it for like 3 years, every Sunday night and occasionally a few times through the week. Brawl kept our attention for a little while but ultimately, we went back to Melee. man i'm going to have to try to get game night started again and break this bad boy out again!

The gameplay is tighter and faster, but in terms of game design, Brawl beats Melee in leaps and bounds. Just making a single player story mode made it better than Melee's game design of having to do Adventure Mode with all 27 characters. Subspace Emmisary only had to be played once.

@Nolan North SSE was boring. Adventure Mode incorporated bits from all the universes from the characters, while SSE was just like Kirby Super Star with the various characters. You didn't have to play Adventure Mode with every character either.
The core gameplay is multiplayer, and Melee is a lot tighter and requires skill to master. Brawl relies on gimmicks like the Smash Ball. There might be a lot of characters, but it's not as fun a game.
Honestly the best part of Brawl was the web-site when everything was revealed, as well as the soundtrack. The game itself is average at best, certainly not the best in the series.

The singleplayer in Brawl was garbage that shouldn't even be played once.
Either way, who the hell plays a Smash Bros game for the singleplayer? That's just to unlock more characters for multiplayer.

If you wanted to beat the game, yes you did. And SSE has some elements of other universes, even using some Mario enemies. The Adventure mode in Melee could've been better (like making it different for each character instead of having them go through the same stages...it's more repetitive than SSE just because you do everything more than once).

I honestly thought Brawl sucked. I'd used Captain Falocn for the original two, and suddenly I get this one and he becomes super weak (why can't his falcon punch smash someone out of the arena anymore?). Its only redeeming quality at that point was Solid Snake, and just because his Final Smash owned so much

Oh, Super Smash Bros...The splendid and nostalgic memories you've given me. Whenever I hear the theme music from either Melee or Brawl, it's so sweet.
I remember nearly three years ago come this March I picked up Brawl on launch day. When people complain about the Wii, I can't help but think of gold coins like Brawl that have provided me some spectacular experiences.
(Sorry I know this was focused on Melee, but this was something I felt like discussing.)

I love brawl but I wish I could play melee agan(I traded it in). The only thing I miss about it is Mewtwo and a few stages that weren't moved to brawl. But overall brawl is a LOT better.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is my all time favorite GameCube game. The countless hours I'd spend with it fighting friends. When one of my friends told me about Mewtwo I couldn't wait to unlock him. I must've played easily over 2 thousand versus matches with my friends.
I played Brawl for probably a month or two but it didn't last as long for me as Melee, which overall I probably played for at least two years.

Hard to play a game as long as another when it's still only 2 years old. I'm pretty sure EVERYONE that played Melee played it more than Brawl simply because it took 7 years for Brawl to come out...7(+2) vs 2....hmmm, I wonder which has the potential to be played more.

melee is by far the better game. brawl is waaay to slow and you cant do a single combo. melee is fast pace and actually requires skill haha. honestly i try to stay away from brawl. and wtf happened to mewtwo!?!?! why brawl! why!

In Melee, if you really wanted to get good at it, you had to sit for hours doing things like practicing wave dashing. Not so in Brawl.
Which is why I will make the statement: BRAWL IS MORE FUN
You don't need to waste your timing learning any absurd techniques. You don't have to have everything perfectly in muscle memory to be good at it. In the end, you just HAVE MORE TIME to actually play matches with your friends, and the entire group enjoys it far more because everyone has a chance.
My two cents.

@Greippi Brawl is too gimmicky, especially with the Smash Ball. It's a free-for-all based on luck, not skill. That isn't as fun as it is annoying. Everyone I played Melee with was skilled, so the matches were exciting. Also, it's a game you could improve at the more you played, and with friends that were good at the game, you had a reason to refine your techniques and dodge attacks.

@Calatia Exactly. Brawl is a lot more like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter in that a button masher can win a 4 person free-for-all. In Melee, if you tried that, your ass was handed to you on a silver platter.

Well at least the button mashers now have a chance? XD
Eh, Brawl can still get advanced enough that a good player will beat a button masher. There's just less of a gap in terms of skill.
Another thing with Brawl and the lack of combos is that it forces you to play more mind games. Which gives the game a very different playing style, that I'm quite fond of.
Oh, and Brawl is less frustrating. There has never been a moment when I've wanted to snap my controller in half. In Melee? Screw ups were so much more common... (I'm very thankful for the new, easier ledge-grabbing)

"It's not a bug, it's a feature"
Regardless if it was intended or not, the reality is that if you want to play on a tournament level, wavedashing is a basic technique. Melee is littered with those sorts of things that the average player is never going to be capable of pulling off (ironically I learnt to wavedash in Melee by playing Brawl?).
A lot of the advanced techniques in Brawl are far easier to pull off. Something like a DACUS, or a reverse aerial rush takes a pretty short amount of time to get used to and implement in your gameplay. And they don't give you an overwhelming advantage either, so it all remains pretty friendly.
When playing Melee with friends, THERE WAS BLOOD. Maybe some cursing too... which is okay in short doses.

@Greippi I prefer the DACUS in brawl to wavedashing myself. If you want it to be, brawl can be just as technical of a game as melee, but not as fast and tight feeling.

Metroid Prime, maybe. God knows how astonishing it would look with an HD makeover.
Wind Waker, I'm honestly not sure needs the upgrade. That game still looks gorgeous and plays smoothly. If they wanted to completely remake it - like, say, by putting in actual dungeons instead of the tedious Triforce quest - that'd be one thing, but I don't really think a re-release, even with visual upgrades, would be necessary.
Super Smash Bros... if they included an actually good online mode and maybe some Street Fighter-style character balancing, then yes, I would re-buy it.

Well that work certainly shows. Melee is my favorite game ever, probably. It's good that he realizes how good Melee is so maybe next time he can use it as a starting point to make a worth sequel rather than trying to nerf good franchises with this "casually accessible" garbage.
