X-Men Arcade coming to XBLA on Dec. 15 as two-month exclusive [update]
76
Update: The release date has been updated by Konami. X-Men Arcade arrives in North American on December 14 for PSN and December 15 for XBLA.
Following October's announcement of Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network versions of X-Men Arcade, many of you had just one question for publisher Konami: "When do we get to play it?" (Two if you count, "Did anyone pick Dazzler yet?") In speaking with Eurogamer, Konami confirmed that the game would slice up Xbox Live Arcade in North America and Europe next Wednesday, December 15. PlayStation Network will get the game two months later in February.
No price has been put to the partially updated release, but we're hoping Microsoft's exclusivity money bag keeps it squashed.

@Killface was here No, I thought the exclusive MP beta for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was kinda lame too, and I don't own a 360.

Eh... It's all marketing to effect the overall perception of the platform. I know several people who more or less "converted" to the 360 to have early access to the DLC for GTA 4. Not the same thing, I know, but it's all part of the same concept. Like Tuxy said, they wouldn't keep trying it if it didn't. *sigh*

Really? A timed exclusive on an almost two decades-old game? Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but shouldn't all that XBL Gold money be going towards something more useful?

Needs to be 400 points max. As much as I used to love this game, I would have preferred it got the "Re-Shelled" treatment.
Posted: Dec 8th 2010 12:15PM Twist said
@Teancum I wasn't impressed with Re-Shelled. I would rather see thing game get the Street Fighter 2 HD Remix treatment where they mostly leave the game-play alone and just redo all the graphics. This game would have looked sweet with redraw sprites by UDON.

The "Re-shelled treatment"? So you want them to take a perfectly good game and make it shitty?

funny thing is, i would always pick her because i was intrigued due to having no knowledge of her character prior to this game. this eventually led to dazzler being my favorite x-(wo)man.
@teancum: im glad they didnt butcher it like ubisoft did turtles in time. the fact that they made them move in 8 directions instead of four broke the mechanics severely.

I used to love this game but I am wondering if it will stand the test of time or not. This is one of my big three for classic beta-em-ups though. Now if we can just get The Simpsons Arcade and Capcom's Aliens vs Predator arcade.

Haha, Simpsons Arcade is totally due. There's probably some copyright bullshit from holding it back though.

I have a 360, but I ain't paying for an online subscription. I'll wait the two months when it comes out on PS3. I still have plenty of other crap to play in the meantime.

I was going to say... aside from November, December is probably the worst time to have this come out.... I've got 8 great games sitting on my shelf right now waiting for me to play.. I can wait the 2 months.. I wonder how much they paid for this one?

Yeah, there are so many great games out these days that I no longer worry about low grade exclusives. This game wasn't that good anyway, but there are so many games out that it's hard to care about exclusives anyway.
It was much more annoying at the beginning of the generation.
Fact is, games have to be good to get high sales, and if you don't think your game can compete, you might be tempted to take one of these exclusivity deals. It's a strong indicator that the dev knows the game has problems or just isn't much fun.
I've learned over time that timed exclusives... games that already have that investment in multiplatform but think they make more money this way, have a lot of bugs or are not much fun.
So pass.

I'm guessing they get a cut of whatever sales made on XBLA? Even still, I can't imagine them making THAT much of a profit off it from whatever they had to pay for making it a "timed exclusive". They can't honestly think people will go out and buy a 360 just to play this game 2 months ahead of time, right?

@EatSleepChuck There will be a dashboard ad with the xmen on it a week before Christmas when someone gets a new 360 and there will not be on psn. Branding with a major franchise goes a lot further than most people here could ever hope to realize.
MS however realizes this in spades.

You lose respect for a company for trying to give its customer base a little something "extra"?
I don't understand, unless you only own a PS3 and are upset that Sony doesn't do this kind of thing more often.

What extra are they giving to the 360 users? The fact that PS3 owners will have to wait 2 months has nothing to do with 360 users playing the game. Something "extra" would be like 6 player co-op as opposed to 4 or more characters.

They aren't giving their gamers something extra. They are paying to take things away from other gamers. I don't benefit for that at all. I do not wish to see Sony do this more often, and any 360 player that thinks they somehow benefited from this is delusional.
It used to bug me, but not any more. There are far more games on PS3 than I'll ever get to play, anyway.
But MS should be very careful. Using their OS and Office suite profits to fund denial of products to a competitor in another field is illegal in many parts of the world. MS knows this well because they have been convicted of this behavior in courts across Europe.
I can think a bit beyond what games I personally play and see this hostile behavior is meant to eliminate competition instead of actually competing.

@Dustin F That wasn't what the European courts decided at all. Exclusivity does not equal denial of products...and even if it did the European decision was based on MS being a monopoly.
I'll let you do your own research to discover what a monopoly is.
AT&T struck a deal with apple in much the same manner MS strikes deals. Legal in every regard.

OK, maybe "extra" wasn't quite the right word to use.
"The fact that PS3 owners will have to wait 2 months" to play the game sure could be the reason someone picked up a 360 over the PS3 as MS seems to do this kind of thing more often than Sony. I would think getting to play some games first would be a "bonus?" for some people.

I have all 3 consoles this generation so I really don't have a dog in this fight but I absolutely expect all three companies to do things to make me want to use their product over their competition's product. Whether it be MS and timed exclusives and XBL or Sony and all their first party studios trying to make the best games out there or Nintendo just being Nintendo, how are any of them not trying to accomplish the same thing? They're just going about it in their own ways.
And you're being very naive if you think every publically traded company in the world isn't trying to eliminate the competion.

Then I'm very naive?
I think most of them actually are trying to make money. Sometimes, eliminating the competition helps, and sometimes it hurts. Ford was worried that GM and Chrysler could go out of business and actively lobbied to get them special dispenation Ford did not directly benefit from.
Restaurants frequently try to be located near competition because it's good for all of their businesses. The world isn't as black and white as you think.

Doing deals to make an 'item' 'exclusive' for a period of time/forever is in no way what so ever illegal in any country which has a real legal system.
