Game Informer continues its coverage of the recently announced Tomb Raider reboot, this time offering up a discussion with Crystal Dynamics on the creation of the new Lara Croft. Global brand director Karl Stewart noted that the new Tomb Raider began as a continuation of Lara's most recent adventure, Underworld. Eventually, however, the team chose to create an origin story in order to "reposition" Lara and make her relevant once again.
Art Director Brian Horton added that it's important for today's audience to "believe in their characters" and that Crystal Dynamics hopes that gamers "care for Lara at the end of the day." Expanding on this idea, the team approached the new design based on who Lara is as a person. "We wanted her be a blend of someone that has a level of vulnerability and inner strength," said Horton, adding that the focus of the redesign was to "understand who she was inside."
Furthermore, as Tomb Raider is an origin story, Lara will grow as a character as the tale is told, and players will be able to see actual changes. Stewart notes, for example, that Lara may be taken aback by enemies during her first encounters. However, as the game progresses, her performance and animations will change to reflect her growing stronger as a character. Read the full article for more on how Crystal Dynamics went about creating a new Lara, both inside and out.

Im cool with smaller boobs, so long as she still wears short shorts. Kinda reminds me of Jessica Alba, but dirtier.

Doubtful, but I think that mysterious "d" under the picture might have something to do with her cup size.

Way to take a stand, buddy... How dare people comment on probably the "biggest" change in a character redesign... about an article on a character redesign.
What else are they going to talk about? How she's wearing a white tank top instead of a green one now?

WHAT!!!! No over sized boobs!!! This is an outrage!!!! How dare they try to make her more realistic and make her more like a person than just some chest to stare at!!
Posted: Dec 9th 2010 9:15PM bm111 said
I know you're being sarcastic, but it's more the other way around. The only outrage there ever was has been over boobs being too big. In every game or movie ever, even if there are a lot of other things to see, if there's boobs the first comments will always be directed at them and whether or not they're too big.
Since the beginning of time, it has been a continuous outrage by insecure females, and p*ssywhipped males who are trying wayyy too hard to get into a girl's panties.
I'm sick of it. Some of the early TR games we're true works of beauty, but all those people can ever talk about is "oh god big boobs oh noooo so unrealistic! nobody has big boobs and nobody should like them!"

Is it me or is tomb raider just like sonic. It just seems they can't bring these these two franchise back to greatness. Why even call her lara, maybe laras daughter or something like that. I think that's the best way to go when you change a character that much. I am liking the new look.
Posted: Dec 9th 2010 6:33PM Discotheque said
@mmmfishtacos Have you played the last few Tomb Raider games? It feels like everybody's just spouting bullshit about this series.
This is nothing like Sonic.
Anniversary was a good game as was Legend. Underworld wasn't bad either (and looked pretty good too). And that PSN/XBLA game was really really fun. Some good coop puzzles.

@Discotheque Well i did play the PSN/Live one, but it didn't really grab me, and i played underworld (i think) and that didn't do it either. I really want one to work out. Always like tomb raider.

@Discotheque Gotta agree on that. Yeah, the last "trilogy" didn't have the production values of, say, Uncharted but they were criminally underrated. If Underworld came from a small studio and didn't have the name "Tomb Raider" attached to it, everyone would be lauding it as a hidden gem.
Don't get me wrong, none of them are perfect but somehow the line has recently blurred between being "not perfect" and "crap". The last Tomb Raider that was (IMO) crap was Angel of Darkness. Everything afterward is at least worth a look.

I wonder if sales will plummet or spike because of the chest change. I'm looking forward to the next game where she gets muscles. Nothing turns me on more than muscle on a woman (not being sarcastic)

I don't know if they get what was wrong with the series. As someone who beat Underworld (one of 12 people probably), the problem wasn't the story. IT'S THE GAMEPLAY AND POLISH. The puzzle platforming isn't as good as Prince of Persia mostly because the controls are weak. Shooting mechanics are lame. You just hold down fire and the auto aim send Lara into a schizo shooting that is really boring. If they could some how meld the shooting of Uncharted with Prince of Persia puzzle platforming with a coat of polish, it would be game of the year. Underworld seemed half finished with some levels obviously better than others. The stories are standard Indiana Jones crap that is in a lot of games. I don't care if they make the story exactly like the Crystal Skull if they fix the gameplay and spend some time polishing it.
BTW - For Tomb Raider and every other game. Underwater levels suck. This includes Mario.
