Recording Alan Wake audio was just as scary as listening to it
32
In a recent interview with Designing Sound, the audio team behind Alan Wake revealed much about their process creating the game's creepy soundscape. One of the more interesting bits in the interview involves the field recording that was done to capture some of the nature sounds of the forest. Pete Comley, a freelance sound designer hired for the project, actually lives in Washington and recorded sounds in many of the forests on which Alan Wake's environments are based.
"Some of the recording was done very late at night in environments very similar to the ones Alan Wake tromps through, far in the woodsy backcountry," said Comley. "I had to keep reminding myself that there were no such things as "the Taken" when I heard the sound of elk crackling through the underbrush in the moonlit darkness (or even worse, total darkness)," he said, adding, "Making this game scared the daylights out of me more than once since I feel like I live where it takes place."
Check out the full, exhaustive interview for more on Alan Wake's audio design process, including how the team approached creating the sound of light, the Dark Presence and the Taken.

Really? I always thought this was a moderately scary game. I guess I should try this out. The only thing that really scared the shit out of me was this:

Really?
I thought it was 'Hollywood scary', as in, only scary the first 2 or 3 times but after that it was all the same. However, I still enjoyed it.
Playing the first Condemned, in the dark, with surround sound... That's an experience.

play it on nightmare. equipment is much more scarce, you never seem to have enough flashlight batteries, and the enemies are tougher. i thought alan wake was great, but what really freaked me out about it was the crazy shit that the demented dudes would say as they chased after you.

I was a little disappointed in the scare level of Alan Wake.
It was great to hear Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in the game, however.

I guess you have muster the japanese horror games also. If not, you should try it too. Lots of survival horror to play and I must say most of them scares me and brings out the adrenaline rush everytime I play them. lol. On the other hand, the latest and recent Resident Evil games are getting action-adventure, shooter like and totally diverting from its usual survival horror genre which sucks IMO. Survival horrors are awesome.

Survival horror games are fantastic. Yep, I've played through some Japanese ones, with Silent Hill 2 being my favorite. I don't care much for the newer action-oriented Resident Evil games. It's difficult to keep up both action and horror, and the horror aspect seems to suffer the most.

We need more good horror games. Last one I played was Amnesia, and before that was Alan Wake. Granted, I didn't find Alan Wake nearly as scary as Amnesia but it was a great game nonetheless.

I really liked the game. Haven't gotten round to finishing it. I understand that makes me a bad person since I'm so used to finishing things quickly ;p
But playing on hard was the right choice. Running out of ammo and flashlight batteries (until I learned they recharge) so running to the next point of light was rather intense.

Alan Wake is a decent game but IMO it is not a perfect game. I was a fan of the open world gameplay first announced years ago and I still think that Alan Wake 2 could use some of that technology to create a fresh experience.

Beat this game on hard on my first playthrough (not something I usually do). Felt the need to have a flashlight close at hand for like a week afterwards.

You know the devs care about the game when they feel the same emotions making it as one would when playing it.

Scary game, but the core gameplay was horrible in the 4 chapters I played. No idea how it got an 8.5 from Gamespot. 7.0 score would've been better.

care to explain how the gameplay was horrible? i thought it was just fine.

Crappy combat.. dodge system seemed you to dodge at the last moment for objects that are already in the air.. Alan can't run for more than 5 seconds.. headshots with the pistol were useless - for playing on normal, the enemies were over tough or just more then there should of been - it's like they balanced it & then nerfed the main character.. and that's from someone who beats most games on the highest difficulty... then the DLC seemed to be locked to hard, 4+ enemies at once was too much for that character.. some areas had enemy wells/infinite spawns which are dumb in any game

What games precisly?
I played the game on hard, first time, and then nightmare, and whilst there're a couple of tricky sections I didn't find the game over taxing at all - in fact I beleive they balanced the difficulty perfectly.
