Programmer/artist Chris O'Shea has tapped even more of the Kinect's potential as a nerd fantasy-fulfillment device -- using its hand-tracking abilities, he's turned the gadget into an air guitar simulator. Check out the video after the jump to watch his wild gesticulations turn into sweet riffs.

A friend of mine has a theory that Windows 8 will involve hardware and software incorporation of Kinect, or related/upgraded technology, as they would need a reboot in order to convince everybody to support it in everyday PC programs. But this would be a couple of years or more away.

Hardware incorportation? Highly doubtful. Dont think we will be seeing Windows 8 bundled with Kinetc.
Software side seems pretty possible however. Kinetc is a major step forward, but theres still miles to go and problems to solve before this tech becomes practical for home use. As fun as these displays are, a mouse is still superior in speed and efficiency for lots of what we are seeing.
This air guitar is of course an exception.

all that tracking is awesome... but the real test is the ability to track finger positions for actual chord replication.
get to it hackers!

I love those guys who spell Kinect wrong
- Just wondering, do you spell MS with the dollar sign?
PS. If you have dyslexia, I am genuinely sorry.

Makes me wish i was a college student again.

It depends what type of hardware we're talking about. The trend with technology seems to be making all in one devices with clean and intuitive interfaces. Although Microsoft have the Xbox brand, it seems doubtful that desktop PC's will continue forever as they are today (as a PC gamer, a small portion of my soul was lost to admit this point).
Perhaps it won't come down to Microsoft making their own iPhone, but with creativity in the right areas and the Kinect technology getting cheaper, we could see new devices that feature the technology and are designed to use its input in streamlined ways. As stoned as we were, eventually we had a vision of the entire internet changing format to support ergonomic motion navigation through upgrades to browsers.

I see neural interfaces becoming commonplace before or at around the same time as this becomes truely practical. This tech is certainly fasincating and i do believe will have a niche market for tech enthusiasts and of course video games, but in terms of application controlling its still pretty inefficent. This sort of tech (only more evolved) + some sort of neural interface with a glasses free 3D screen is what I think consumers will be using in 10 years time. Keyboards and mice should start to die out around then too.

The hacks that come out for this are a lot more interesting than any of it's games in my opinion.

Neural interfaces will be the end of office productivity. Imagine a computer where you don't even have to physically choose to follow a random-browsing thought train!
