Portal finished in under 10 minutes sets a world record

You may not agree with YouTube user DemonStrate's methods, but you certainly can't argue with the results: the world record for fastest Portal playthrough. What took you hours only took him minutes -- specifically, less than ten of them. It's kinda the thing of note here.

You guys aren't seeing what he was trying to do.
He wasn't trying to go for a world record, he was trying to see how fast he could complete it.
When doing speedruns, you have the people who aim for the world records, and you have people who aim to complete it as fast as possible using glitches. The latter is what he was doing. The game was not modified except for the skin on the Portal gun.
Now, if you have the guys who use tool-assisted runs, where they make jumps perfectly because the computer is doing it for them, then they claim world record, yes, that's bullshit.
And remember, it took him two years to do this video. That's plenty of time to learn and perfect the glitches.

Feels very cheep ... taking advantage of glitches, and what with the 'DemonStrate: Portal Master' on the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, and then all of that super annoying backwards hopping.
Congrats I guess :S

Speed Runs are awkward things, and this one isn't any less awkward than the 4 hour speed runs of OoC

I thought kotaku had dropped to a all new low by posting this story, now joystiq. Just watch this trash and you can see the cheating going on. My god, its like watching people support Billy Mitchel.

That last minute was amazing, it's basically Chell going "screw you GLaDOS, I'm outta here".

Did you watch the vid? Yeah i understand speed running, its getting into the clipping space, bringing turrets into the elevator, and other random portal bs that show this guy is using mods beyond belief.
Posted: Dec 10th 2010 10:14AM Optimaximal said
@US 447 He's not using any mods. He's just heavily bending the rules of the game and finding microscopic gaps in the maps that allows him to skip very large chunks.

The best speed run for a game is still Morrowind in 7 minutes.

I was going to be angry that he did the speedrun almost entirely using exploits but... he saved the Weighted Companion Cube's life by bypassing the incinerator. I can't be angry at him.

It looks like he's cut this video at numerous points in the elevators. I may be wrong but it certainly looks that way.

So, he clearly altered game files in order to alter the skin for his Portal gun...what's to say he didn't alter other game files in order to make some of these "glitches" possible? That alone should disqualify him.

Most of the glitches make it look like he just edited together videos of him walking into a wall and a video of him later in the game.
If it's not the case, it's still boring / irritating depending on how you see it.

I strongly recommned that the Joystiq users yelling HAX watch DemonStrate's extremely extensive commentary on the glitches and tricks he used in this run. Speaking as someone involved in Speed Demos Archive and TASvideos for quite a few years now, I guess I kind of underestimated the usual public reaction to speedrunning :/

@Chazzr I miss when Cheats and Glitches were a fun part of gaming, now they're horribly demonized or something. I don't know what the deal is.
I blame all those online FPS games.
